Maytag Washing Machines

In Focus...

Lines: Maytag offer two series for Front load washing, the top range Maxima and mid-priced Performance line. The three Top load series are the Bravos, Performance series and the Budget Centennial.

Price range: Maytag put out mostly mid to high priced range washers, a similar price range to that of Whirlpool. Other than the cheaper Centennial, expect to pay anything from $600 - $1400 for a new maytag.

Top Washer: The Maxima is the crème of their front load washing with a starting price of over $1000, named for having maximum space of 5.0 cu ft. The top of the range Bravos HE Top loader is at a comparable price with the same size wash basket.

Bravos: There is a cheaper version of the Bravos (which has 5.0 cu ft capacity) called the “Bravos X” (having a smaller 4.3 cu ft capacity). These come in at half the price of the standard Bravos.

Budget: The Centennial Top load model is Maytag’s budget washer. The price is under $530 for the 4.3 cu ft capacity and $100 cheaper for the 3.3 cu ft capacity.

Quality: Maytag are renowned for quality (my mom still has one from 1973!), however in recent years the quality seems to have diminished. Let’s hope they go back to their old ways soon!

Maytag Front Load Selector

Performance Series $729 - $819

This front-loading series is very popular with customers, citing its whisper-quiet, speedy operation and large capacity as its most redeeming features. Of course, the clothes come out clean, too! The Performance series offers a balanced suspension system, varying levels of Maytag’s “quietseries” feature and all come with a delayed-start option.

Automatic temperature and water level sensors monitor the wash and adjust as necessary, leaving you free to do other things, worry-free. With drum sizes ranging from 4.1 to 4.5 cubic feet, there’s enough space in these washers to do quite a lot of laundry at once.

Like most Maytag washers, the Performance line is available in quite a few colors and is fairly compact in size.

Some things you’ll want to keep in mind: some customers report that their water level sensors don’t seem to be working properly (i.e. the drum always fills to the same level). This is covered under Maytag’s famous warranty, but something to be aware of.

The Performance lineup is NOT Energy Star rated, so if you’ve got a lot of laundry to do, your utility bills might sting you at month’s end.

Epic Z Series $500

These compact, front-loading washers come with a pretty hefty price tag. With a few exceptions, reviews of the Epic Z series are highly positive. Boasting near-complete automation to offset the variety and complexity of the features available this is an “intelligent” washer, and can actually take care of most of the hard stuff for you.

With thermal optimization, including varied wash temperatures within the same cycle and a variable speed agitator, Epic Z washing machines can handle just about anything you put into them appropriately – and efficiently! These Energy Star-awarded washing machines are so efficient that in many areas, you’ll be able to offset the higher sticker price with energy rebates!

Some things you’ll want to keep in mind: although this washer is widely seen as awesome, some people have had trouble with noisiness. There seems to be no middle ground here – those with the “quietseries 300” package purport whisper-quiet operation, while those without report rattling, bouncing noises – especially during the spin cycle. This could be a potential problem if you’re in an apartment or condo, or if you’ve got young children who need their naps.

Although the price tag may be daunting for such a compact machine, the relatively small size of these washers lends itself well to confined spaces, though those with a long laundry list may find an Epic Z too small to keep up with their needs. Many customers report their Epic Z as needing service for various reasons – one common complaint is that small objects, such as pocket change, can slip through the machine’s filters and cause problems with the motor – this can be prevented by thoroughly checking those pockets!

Maytag Top Load selector

Bravos $699 - $999

This is Maytag’s popular midrange washer lineup. The front-loading Bravos are slightly smaller or slightly bigger than the Epic Z series, depending on the model you choose. Offering a bit less control than Maytag’s pricier models, there are still plenty of customizable options.

With variable agitator speeds and temperatures for different types of laundry and up to 16 cycle settings to choose from – as well as the Energy Star rating on some models – Bravos are a good starting machine if you’re always doing the kinds of laundry they can handle. A power wash cycle is great for removing even the toughest stains.

Some things you’ll want to keep in mind: filling hoses are NOT included in the selling price – you’ll have to buy them separately. They’re fairly inexpensive, but don’t forget! Also, Bravos washers are only available in white – probably not a problem if you’re not going to put it in your living room.Finding the correct wash cycle among the dozen-plus pre-set options can take a bit of trial and error, especially if this is your first washing machine, but it’s there, and you’ll find it in time.

Some customers don’t like this line’s low water usage, saying that they don’t use enough water to thoroughly clean heavier items. Additional reports claim that medium-weight clothes often come out twisted, tangled – or even shredded. This can probably be avoided by taking your time to choose the proper combination of cycles… and you wouldn’t experiment with your Sunday best anyway, right?

Centennial $500

Maytag Centennial Series • another midrange series, the top-loading Centennials offer an expanded range of features compared to the Bravos. With a very large drum (4 to 5 cubic feet), and fairly compact exterior, these washers pack a lot of power into a small space!

With built-in sensors for monitoring temperature, water level and the option to set these manually, Centennials make for a highly customisable wash.

Although these washers can handle a lot of laundry, they’re fairly quiet and feature a balancing suspension system to limit “washer walk”. An estimated-time-remaining indicator and delayed-start options (on some models) lets you plan your laundry around your day, instead of the other way around.

All Centennials are Energy Star rated, so all that laundry won’t lead to end-of-month surprises, and they’re available in a decent range of colors to complement your décor.

Some things you’ll want to keep in mind: top-loading washing machines use far more water than their front-loading counterparts – up to three times more. Although these machines are great on electricity, water consumption might be an issue if you live in an area with high service rates. Additionally, some customers report that when using reduced water settings (automatic), Centennials don’t seem to use enough water to get larger loads completely clean.

Reports also indicate that although these machines have a relatively low RPM – and quiet – spin cycle, delicate fabrics can come out twisted and shredded. This can possibly be avoided by selecting the proper cycle combination for your load – but don’t forget!

Lastly, reports abound of service calls placed for Centennial washers – many customers experience problems with these machines early in their life cycle. Caveat emptor!

Maytag Neptune

The critics and the customers have spoken here– stay away. This front-loading model apparently suffers from a severe lack of quality control; many customers have trouble with the Neptune’s operation within as little as a year of purchase! Even Maytag’s biggest fans have turned to greener pastures thanks to the Neptune.

That being said, many Maytag customers are very happy with the efficiency, simplicity and versatility of this washer. Boasting a wide range of features for its price range, the Neptune is a high-performance washer – assuming you get a good one.

The Maytag Company

Everybody remembers the Maytag man and his uneventful job! There’s just nothing for a repairman to do when his company is known for products that last… and last.

Offering many of the same features as higher-priced machines in a more economical lineup, the company makes higher-end washing machines accessible to those on a tighter budget. These aren’t bargain-basement machines by any means, but you’ll find features here that are usually restricted to higher price ranges.Backed by one of the best warranties in the business – 10 years parts and labour – Maytag’s claim to be “America’s #1 preferred laundry brand” isn’t hard to believe. Customers report exceedingly long life for their Maytag washers – sorry repairman! That means there may be quite a few old, less-efficient washers still being used today. Electricity and water aren’t getting any cheaper, and we all know about the need to limit our resource consumption – luckily, Maytag’s newer models are among the most energy-efficient washing machines around.

Lately, since the company’s acquisition by Whirlpool, customers haven’t been happy with Maytag’s lower-end washers. We’ve received many reports of manufacturing defects and washers that just don’t work as they’re intended to.

A solid reputation and reputable track record of quality products mean that Maytag is probably looking into solutions to this new problem, right now.

Reports indicate highly positive experiences – and a few hiccups – with Maytag’s high end lines, continuing to make them a safe bet for most. Available in a wider range of colours than most brands, there’s sure to be a Maytag that fits your home – and your laundry needs.
