Finding a good laundry detergent is one of the first things to do after you've brought your new washer.

You want to make sure you wash your laundry in the correct way.

If you’ve changed from a top loader to a front loader or vice-versa, please note that you will probably have to change your detergent.

HE high efficiency detergents

If you’ve brought a new front loader that is designed to use less water, you would be advised to get an H.E. (high efficiency) washing machine detergent.

We’ve reviewed some of the better detergents on the market today to help you with your choice.

Biological or non biological

detergent
Should I get a biological or non-biological detergent? The biological variety are certainly more popular and do get your whites much cleaner. However you should never use a biological detergent on delicate fabrics such as silk and wool.

Of course biological detergents are full of chemicals. This can leave those of us with sensitive skins a little itchy, especially if you have eczema or dermatitis.

So a big plus for non-biological detergents is that they are kinder to the skin, having fewer chemicals. The lack of chemicals however is the reason why they aren’t as effective at getting the whites white. They lack an enzyme which is put into biological detergents to break the food stains down.

Liquids or Powder

powder laundry detergentWhat about powder or liquids? Powders have been around much longer but there isn’t much difference between them.

Liquids may be better when using cold water to wash your clothes. The laundry detergent is already dissolved in a fluid so doesn’t need hot water to help it dissolve.

Eco friendly ! - going green ?

How about going green?! Washing machines lately are becoming increasingly environmentally friendly. Using less energy and water, which not only help the environment but saves you money.

It’s true that biological detergents are not good for the environment. However there are now washers out there designed not to need any detergents.

Although for most us it’s just not practical to abandon detergents.

You can be eco-friendly though by using lower temperatures in your washes and using the correct amount of detergent. If you do that fewer chemicals will be going out into the environment.

You may find our research into eco friendly detergents and detergent free washing machines useful.
