Performa PAVT234AWW

by Sally
(Fort Worth, TX, USA)

We've had our washer for about three years and it has always been a pain to use. The basket gets off balance extremely easily and then rocks the washer all over the place.

We have to babysit the washer any time we want to wash a load. Our washer has rocked itself out far enough to pull the drain hose loose (several times) and floods the entire garage.

The last time this happened my teenage son had put in a load right before we left for church and we came home to a totally flooded house. Our neighbor had noticed it running out the garage door (and believe me it took a lot of water to do that) and shut off our water outside.

We have tried all different sizes of loads and it makes no difference. I finally opened the top to see if perhaps a spring had broken and it doesn't even have any. The way it is set up it is no wonder it can't stay balanced.

I will NEVER buy another Maytag!

by: Not happy

Our story is similar to all the ones below. Terrible design! I read in the owners manual that this thing was designed so that if it went off balance it would finish the cycle - why would you want that??? If it goes off balance it needs to stop and sound an alarm so that you can balance it so it doesn't gallop all over the floor! The joke is on all of us for buying this thing and not making Maytag replace it!! Our next machine will not be a Maytag....

P.O.S.!!!
by: Shannon

I bought my P.O.S. in 2003. It has jumped, banged, scared the crap out of me from the banging from being off balance for the last time. The S.O.B. finally died last night and it will not be getting a funeral. I spent my last night with it hand wringing out a load of TOWELS.

I always knew I needed to RUN to the basement because my dog BARKED non stop everytime I washed clothes. She would run down behind me and bark at the washer. (Because of those reasons I could never wash clothes when anyone was asleep) I could hardly open the bi-fold doors because it jumped all the way to the front. That washer has so many scratches from me trying to push and get the doors open. I finally had to just leave them open permanatly.

I'm going shopping for a new (NOT MAYBE TAG) one today. Hopefully and I mean hopefully me and my dog will finally get some peace.

Yep, Another loud, walking machine
by: Sue in SC

The problems with this machine seem unanimous. I have had my machine for about 5 years now and it always has had the tendency to get out of balance with the spin cycle. Was minor in earlier years, but these past 4 months! Wasn't wanting to get a new washer now, but... lately, during the spin cycle, for ANY size load, it makes a very loud banging noise and yep, trys to walk out the door, sending my two cats running for cover and me, dodging cats while running to the laundry room! Lots of exercise but am thinking of scrapping this one and hopefully get another brand that works and doesn't frazzle the nerves. What has happened to appliances lasting 10 to 20 years like they use to? Plastic parts so we buy more often? and yep, about that bad odor now coming from the tub area that lots of clorox can't even seem to shake...it has to go, soon, so... maybe I will just open that door for it after all!

horrible washer
by: Anonymous

So glad I found this page. Since we first bought the machine it was loud while agitating, unfortunately it wasn't too noticeable until we moved it from the basement to top floor, hence no more warranty. The basket has never sat right even though it is all level. While washing there is a constant (clunk, grind) under the agitator that is so loud you hate using it. I can't believe this is a Maytag as I have had a few. It also is frequently off balance. I was going to get a pro to repair it as my husband doesn't know what it is but after reading these posts, I will search out another make and no more Maytag for us.

We bought our washer from a business that sells used appliances. We were impressed with its load capacity. We bought it back in 2005 and never had a problem with it until now. It stopped mid-spin and I suspect that something has wrapped around the motor. Hope I never experienced what you guys have. We'll see.

Same Problems
by: Lonnie

We bought a Maytag PAVT234AWW at the end of 2003. It has the balance and walking problem too. I looked at the installation manual and saw that it says to make sure that the rear legs are free. Mine were locked so I released them. The machine seemed more stable after that so I ran a small test load. It seemed to be stable but when my wife put in a regular sized load, it started to "walk" again. I don't know what else to do. It is obviously a poorly designed washer.

We are having to replace our Performa after 3 years. It was nothing but problems from the start, shaking and hopping across the floor, unblancing loads and not draining. We paid $275 for a repairman to come 6 months ago to fix the "brake". When we called service this time, as the spin cycle is so slow the clothes are still dripping after trying manually 3 times to spin them, we were told the call out fee is $125 plus whatever costs of parts & labour.

We were looking for the same plastic pulley and I stubbled into here!! This will be the 2nd time in 5 years we need to replace it!! As you all said you have to buy the whole damn motor to get the 25ct plastic piece!!!

The first time it cost a little over $300 to get it fixed!

Plastic, what a joke! Can't believe it! My husband is furious.

I too have a "walker" and it has damaged the walls and floor of the laundry room.

Maytag should have to recall and replace the plastic piece with METAL for gosh sakes! It is Sunday or I would call them and lodge a huge complaint, which I will do on Monday even though I know they won't give a damn!

My Maytag washer is 2 1/2 years old......has been jumping around since the beginning. We have also replaced the door, as it had a stress crack. This new door has been reinforced (by my husband) so the same thing won't happen.

I don't think it is draining properly, as it has a strong mildew smell. I leave the door ajar and the detergent tray open, to no avail. Have put it through a cycle with bleach, which works for a while, then the smell is back.

Very disappointed in this product.

Off Balance and drain hose.
by: Anonymous

Our performa broke right at a year of heavy use. The transmission went out. Luckily, Lowes replaced it for free, Thank goodness. For the next 4 years, its been ok, and free of problems.... until about 6 months ago when it started going out of balance for a extra towel in with clothes. Then, tonight, the drain hose came off. I found it with the next load ran, obviously. 45 minutes, 4 screws and one hose clamp later, back in business. I think I'm going to find some heavier springs to put on it to help with the off balance problems. thanks to this review board, I fixed it myself. Yah!! I'm with others, I won't be buying another maytag.

This washing machine is horrible. It walks all over the floor, it has pulled the drain hose loose multiple times. It doesn't matter what size of load we put in it, or the type of clothes you load in it. It constantly goes out of balance. About a month ago the washer did not stop when the cycle was complete, it went on and started the next cycle and refilled the washer. we have already spent on repairs what the washer cost in the first place. I will never buy another maytag washer again. It is ridiculus to put plastic parts on a washing machine. We have tons of laundry to do at our house and this machine just cannot handle it. Yesterday it finally died and now we have to go find another machine. I will not pay more money on repairs for this machine. Maytag your products are nothing but JUNK!!!

This washer actually was ok for 2-3 years, then the banging started. It's a $5 plastic part that is the culprit. A washer should provide at least 10 years of service with normal use before you start spending money on it. What a piece of crap; this our last Maytag.

Basement flooded
by: Frankie

The basket "off kilter" has always been a problem as well as a constant "rattle" sound. The basement floor is cement so didn't have the "walking" problem too often... mostly when only 1 towel was mixed in with other smaller items. Yesterday I washed a load with no problems, then put in the second load. Went about other chores upstairs and when I walked past the basement door (about 2 hrs later) I heard water running. Yep, water everywhere in that corner of the basement. Didn't expect to need to replace a washer after only 5 years, but the next one definitely won't be a Maytag. We don't see those lonely Maytag repairmen in TV anymore and now we all know the reason. Lesson learned!

We bought a new washer 3 years back and mine never stays balanced. Maytag customer service is a joke. They wanted to send a "Maytag" man who doesn't even work for Maytag out to take a look.
They wanted $125 for him to show up and woud give me no estimate of what costs after that would be.
So if he quoted me $500 to replace a bolt and I told him to leave I'd still be out my $125.
I am so sick of crappy appliances. My $2,000 fridge freeze anything placed in the rear of it even though the temp. reads 43 degrees. Poor, over priced products and even worse customer service.
I did do some reseach and a few people have said that it was the "snubber" ( a small plastic disk near the transmission) that has gone bad.
If you see a white dust on the floor of your washer cabinet that could be it. Mine has that.
It's a $5 part so I'm ordering one and am going to try and replace it. I will let you know if I have any success.

I have bought a top loader maytag performa model pavt234aww . the transmission went after only about 3 years of use. I recieved a new transmission from maytag for free. I then installed it very carefully and the washer seemed to work ok until I noticed how much it would not keep balanced. Now I found water leaking on my floor and took the machine apart to find that the inner drum rubbed a hole in the washers inner tub. I do not like to quit, but this washing machine is a piece of trash in design. Maytag should give all of us a rebate towards a new washer. Now it loks like I wasted all of my efforts to fix this junk. If I give up I will be offering my transmission and parts that are still good to anyone that wants to fix what i can not

Never balanced correctly
by: Sean J

My wife and I bought a Maytag washer and dryer in hopes to never have to buy another. Five years later and its time to buy another washer. Maytag is off the list of brands to consider in our house. Like others have stated, the machine never balanced correctly adding stress to the pulley on the motor. Finally the motor, pulley and belt assembly had had enough. The belt melted, nearly in two. For the peace of mind, along with cost of replacement parts, its better to buy a new brand...this time with lots of research.

buying this was a mistake
by: william

i bought a maytag washer and dryer a matching pair because of their reputation. a large mistake , first the dryer tub wore through the front of the cabinet and i had to replace almost everything in it including the front , while waiting for it to be fixed i bought a roper for about half the cost of the maytag, when i finally got the parts and fixed it i gave it to my daughter , it looked and worked like new but the roper looked to me like a better machine so i kept it, now my washer locked up when i found out the problem it had a metal bushing in the pump pully that worked up locking everything ,it burnt the belt and melted the motor pully and now i have to buy those and the pump costing about 100. just for the pump i havn't got the other prices yet, but when maytag got whirlpool to build their washers and dryers in mexico , well lets just say there wont be anymore people bragging they have had theirs for 25 years , if they last 2 to 3 years they have been lucky.

Maytag Per-thetic
by: Anonymous

It seems I'm not alone in my complaints about my washer. I bought my Performa in 2004. Since then it has been nothing but repetitive headaches. Aside from dancing around the floor, the agitator ALWAYS comes loose and can be found sitting on top of the clothes when the load is finished. Once I came home to a flooded home and couldn't figure for the life of me where the water had come from. I knew it came from the washer but that was it. I took it in the garage, hooked it all up, and did everything I could to get it to flood. It worked fine. Now, above all else, the thing started singing as it danced. Once again, I unhooked everything and set it all up in the garage to discover that the pump has failed. I went to a parts store, got a new pump, and just completed the replacement. If not for my Dave Ramsey baby steps, I'd have been replacing this thing today. However, it works once again and now I will begin the process of saving for a new one. This things makes me insane!!

I bought a Maytag Performa PAVT234AWW washing machine in 2004. Same story as everyone else. It is perfectly leveled and still jumps all over the place even with the smallest loads. Sometimes the only thing that keeps it from going across the basement floor are the water lines holding it to the wall. The tranny went out this week from being beaten all over the place for five years. I thought about replacing it but then I'm still stuck with a very loud and unstable washing machine. Well, they want me to buy a whole new motor just to get the pulley. They will not get another red cent from me. I will NEVER buy another Maytag.
