Washing super stinky clothes

If you have to wash super stinky clothes, think clothes that have been in the gym locker all year, or that funky smell under the bed, I have found a great tip. Put a little bit of vanilla in with your load.

I use about a teaspoon and a half for a large load. It is amazing how big a difference the vanilla will make for these super stinky clothes and you don't have to pay a lot of extra money for chemical products that don't tend to work that well anyway.

Vanilla? Great idea
by: Anonymous

I love the smell of vanilla, so this is a terrific idea. If you want a cheap place to buy vanilla, see if you or a friend of yours can get to a place where restaurants buy their food. A friend of mine uses vanilla for bear hunting and I was able to get him a gallon of it for about a quarter of what he would pay at a grocery story.

borax
by: Anonymous

Borax used to be used before the advent of disposable diapers and mothers had to wash cloth diapers. It changes the pH of the water and helps tremendously with urine odor elimination. You can add about 1/4 of a cup of borax to the washing load for cleaner clothes.

Vinegar takes out smells but you can boost it
by: Anonymous

Vinegar will take out urine smells but you can boost it by adding baking soda. This will cause an oxidation reaction which will foam up so you need to be careful but it real seems to neutralize odors and brighten. On bright colors I'd try it on a small area first to make sure it doesn't fade. My grand-mother also used this to remove blood but I'm not sure it's the beat for that.

Good tip
by: Anonymous

I wash sheets and pj's with vanilla extract because of it's calming effects. For super, super stinky clothes (like cat pee) I use a product called "odo-ban". My house is like Dr. Doolittle's and between vanilla and "odo-ban" you'd never know it.

Cat urine? Stain?
by: Gale

Does this work with cat urine? I'm desperate as nothing seems to work. The only concern I have is that maybe the vanilla extract could stain. It is so dark.

Super Stinky Clothes?
by: Anonymous

I use the spray "Super Odor Eliminator"/ Febreze on the clothing before I launder. Discovered this when washing pet bedding after a skunk incident.

Vinegar is a natural deodorizer
by: Anonymous

I put a 1/2 cup to a cup of White Vinegar in when clothes go through the rinse cycle. White vinegar gets rid of the odors, and leaves no vinegar odor of it's own.

how it works?
by: Anonymous

That's interesting. I wonder if it does more masking than eliminating the odor. Either way, if it gets rid of the smell, that works for me.
