Frigidaire GLGH1642FS Washer/Dryer Combo

by Angela F.
(Orange County, CA)

The Frigidaire Washer/Dryer combo is a great solution for apartments or other small spaces where you don't have room for a full sized side-by-side washer and dryer setup.

Ours is in a hall closet in our condo, and has a door, which makes it virtual undetectable to guests. This washer/dryer combo has 16 different wash cycles and 4 wash speeds - I do like having a gentle cold cycle that is definitely less agitation than permanent press or cotton. It says that it has "super load" capacity, but I've found that to be just hype (like so many others). That's not to say you can't put a decent sized load of clothes in the washer, but I just would caution doing 15-20 large towels, blankets, jeans, or other heavy material items in the same load.

I do like the front load capability as well as the variable water level capability, although I must say I try not to run the washer (or dryer for that matter) without having a full load. But you may feel differently. The dryer has worked fine for us, with no problems.

It has four different drying settings, but I use a Permanent Press one most of the time. I also prefer NOT to use the end of cycle signal (basically because I hate those darn buzzers)since I do a lot of laundry late at night. I've been told by my neighbor that they've been able to hear the signal on occasion! Overall it's a good washer/dryer combo - although I don't have many to compare it too, as this is really the first one I've used.

But if you live in an apartment or a condo, it sure beats using the community laundry room ANY DAY OF THE WEEK! Pricing is around $850-1000 for this model and as far as I know, only comes in white.

Holds large loads
by: Rachael

I had the Frigidaire washer and dryer combo when I lived in an apartment several months ago. It was a great little combo, with the washing machine on the bottom, and the dryer on top, stacked so that it would take up as little space as possible. It washed just as well as any other washing machines I have had in the past, and was very energy efficient.

The washing machine was a front-loader, so while I expected the capacity to be limited in the stackable combo unit, I was pleasantly surprised by how large my loads were able to be while still maintaining the integrity of the washing machine.

The dryer is also more cavernous than I expected it to be--while it would sometimes take more than one cycle to completely dry my clothes and linens, it was still an efficient little dryer considering its compact size. I was fortunate to find this combo unit on a super clearance sale, and paid around seven hundred dollars for the combo. From what I gather, it generally retails for almost two hundred dollars more, so I was very fortunate.

I highly recommend this washer and dryer combo to anybody who needs an efficient washer and dryer combo, but needs to conserve space. It is small enough to actually fit into a closet if necessary, but efficient enough to do the job of a standard size washer and dryer. I passed it on to a friend of mine when I moved out of the apartment, and she still has it.

It's running strong, and she is certainly getting her money's worth out of this unit! I would purchase another one of these Frigidaire combo washer and dryer units in a heartbeat if I needed to again, and I always recommend this washer and dryer because of its durability, efficiency, and space saving capabilities.

OK for a rental apartment
by: Anonymous

This washer/dryer combo came installed in our son's new apartment as a "furnished" item, along with a microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher. The unit is compact, and hidden behind folding closet doors along with the hot water heater unit. It is an attractive space saver, and is convenient.

However, the unit is small in size, and will not hold a large load of clothes in the washer so it takes several more wash loads to do the weekly family laundry. To add insult to injury, the small capacity dryer unit attached above the washer easily clogs with lint, and is very slow to dry clothing even on high! As a result, I often find I am waiting for a load to dry before I can add another load to the washer, so it takes forever to do laundry on laundry day!

The advantages of this unit is its space saving feature, but in my opinion, that is far outweighed by the lack of capacity for the unit, which ends up wasting time. If this unit had not been supplied as a part of the apartment rental I would never buy one. I would instead opt for a full-sized washer/dryer set that is much better suited for a family laundry room.

I also don't like lifting the clothing above head level into the small dryer drum. Wet clothes are heavy and this is considerably time consuming compared to a full-sized floor style dryer unit. All in all, this unit is OK for a rental apartment, but I would never consider it for a purchase for my own home.
