Freshen clothes up left in washer

by KH
(London KY)

I am always washing clothes and then having to leave the house before they are finished. Then, I come home and they have that icky smell from sitting in the washer for a couple of hours. The best way to freshen them is to put just a capful of lemon juice in the machine and turn it on the rinse cycle. This gives a quick refresher and once dry all you smell is the detergent.

I run another half a cycle with just a little tiny bit of fabric softner and a double rinse cycle and after they dry the smell fresh.

Can Also Use...
by: Lynda G

A small amount of bleach for whites

Ammonia diluted in water for colors

Vinegar for heavy fabrics like towels

Add to rinse cycle and dry as usual, Don't add fabric softener again.

Ammonia is great if you have a fisherman in the house!

lemon juice

This is such a great idea! I will have to try it because this happens to me all the time. I thought the only way to get rid of the smell was to rewash the whole thing.

Yay for Lemon

I'm going to second this idea! I used to either re-wash or spray some Febreeze until my sister-in-law suggested using lemon juice. The clothes come out smelling great, and if it's a small enough load with a hint of lemon!
