Red Wine Stains (Used mostly for carpet, but works on almost all fabrics)

by Jessica
(Athens, Ohio, USA)

I use this one for red wine stains in my carpet all the time!

Equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide (used for first aid, you probably have some in your medicine cabinet) and a soap for the fabric the stain is on. Like carpet cleaner for white carpets, or something like that.

Dawn (the dishwashing soap) works best in my opinion for a multitude of washable fabrics. I use this one the most. Joy works well too.

Simply apply the mixture to the stain, have it sit for a few minutes and scrub. It takes the stain right out, but be warned...hydrogen peroxide can bleach the fabric! So try a dab on in an inconspicuous place first to see if it'll bleach the fabric! Unless your carpet's white that is.

As always, this works a little better if the stain is fresh, but multiple treatments will take out the oldest, dirtiest red wine stain.

Red wine NEW
by: Anonymous

rubbing alcohol works to remove red wine from most fabrics. I've even used it on linen. Hasn't worked great on my sisal rug but still working on it. Just pour the alcohol straight on the wine stain. If you are able to slide the stain into a bowl with enough alcohol to remain standing in the bowl. This method works even better. Just try to wet the area around the wine stain with water first. This keeps the fabric from just soaking up all the wine and possibly having it spread into the surrounding fabric. Good luck!

Merlot
by: Amy

I have found it depends on the type of red wine. Some merlots do not come out this way. I still get a shadow of the stain. I am still looking for a better solution.

Works like a charm - maybe too well
by: Anonymous

The mixture does work - I've applied to red wine spilled onto a sisal carpet that soaked overnight after our cat knocked a wine glass over. Stain came right out, but so did the dirt in the carpet - we now have a light spot, but definitely better than a wine stain.

I will definitely try this!

I never thought of this trick, but it makes perfect sense. One trick I have used successfully for blood stains is to replace the hydrogen peroxide with spray starch. Works like a dream!

Always spot check first!
by: Anonymous

Always remember to spot check cleaning methods somewhere out of site before you try any liquid cleaner. Hydrogen Peroxide can bleach or fade darker carpets. The white wine technique is interesting, I have not heard of that before but I'll keep it in mind to try next time I spill red...

I found this method to be semi-effective. It did get most of the stain out but I could still seem the outline of it and a faint residue.

White wine TRUMPS red wine every time!
by: Ms. V

The best way to get red wine stains out of ANY fabric is to dump cheap WHITE WINE over the red!

This works best when fresh, but will even take old red wine stains out.

A guest at my sister's wedding splashed red wine on her wedding dress, and she was in tears until I rushed over and began blotting it with chardonnay. Within seconds it was as if the accident had never happened.
