Miele touchtronic W4840

by Sadriddin
(Nashville, TN)

This is the best washing machine I've ever owned, cannot compare it to Whirpool Duet or LG Tromm washers. It cleans perfectly, very gentle on delicates and knittens.

It is also babyproof because of the lock, no other high end washer brands has this feature! Cleans and satitizes cottons and towels. My white clothes became even whiter! Spin is great, leaves clothes wrinkleless.

I wish it had also steam wash, steam fresh and allergiene cycles. Other than that this is quality product, expect using it for the next 20 years.

I loved using Miele commercial washers in Europe, these washers are super smart. They automatically detect soil level and laundry weight, you just have to select the cycle, it automatically sets the required time! Be it 20 minites or an hour, your clothes come out fresh, super clean, no detergent residue, wrinkleless, etc

Design is flawless and attractive. Second best for me will be Whirpool Duet steam washer. LG tromm is flimsy, most people buy it after watching brainwashing commercials.

A 4.0 cubic foot stainless steel Honeycomb wash drum, eleven, count' em, eleven, MASTERCARE Wash Programs, and a built-in water heater, the Miele W4840 Super Capacity Washer shows no mercy to the likes of mud, grease, or grime. 24 hour delay start even allows you to leave the house when things get ugly.

The Miele W4840 is Energy Star compliant, which sounds great. What does it mean, though? In a nutshell, Energy Star is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.

Over priced and troublesome - Miele W 1215
by: Anonymous

I know this is a different model, but I made the mistake of believing all the hype about high end appliances and purchased several Miele appliances. .

FIRST - IF YOU ARE ON WELL WATER AND DO NOT HAVE A HOUSE FILTER SYSTEM, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. EITHER BUY A FILTER SYSTEM OR BUY SOMETHING ELSE. ANY GRAINS OF SAND CAUGHT IN THE FILTER WILL SHUT THIS BABY DOWN IN NO TIME.

1. Washer - Touchtronic W 1215 - this was not my first choice, but I had to purchase it because my "custom" builder built my laundry room and cabinets wrong and did not allow enough space for the washer and dryer I had purchased (but that's another story). The Miele at the time was the only one that would fit the space. The washer does not have a separate spin cycle, so if the machine does not spin out your clothing correctly, you must either run it again or hand wring. Any bit of sand will shut this machine down and you will have to detach the water hose and clean the small filters. Biggest pain in the neck. I have never noticed a cleaner laundry as some have suggested. My machine is about 5 years old. There are many cheap plastic parts on the face of the machine which break and crack easily. The fabric softener/detergent drawer do not drain completely, leaving water to drip down the front of the machine and looks terrible. If you do not wipe down the interior door gasket, it grows mold. You can not use bleach with these machines, as the bleach may damage the rubber door gasket. This means you must hand wash or soak anything that needs bleach and then make sure all the bleach is removed before you put it in the machine. And the capacity is a lot smaller than most machines.

Dryer Touchtronic T- 1405 - The dryer is just OK. It has an auto moisture sensor that shuts off the dryer when it senses the clothes are dry, which works fine with a full load, but if you put in just one or two items, it shuts off before the items are dry. Door Lint screen allows lint to collect in other places within the door hollows which is difficult to remove.

Miele double oven - over-priced, high tech, eletronic crap with all kinds of features you will never use. One time I used the rotisserie feature with a whole chicken. It seemed to be cooking just fine one minute and then when I checked it again a few minutes later, the bird was in pieces on the oven tray and all that was left on the rotisserie was a chicken wing and that thing was spinning around like crazy. Needless to say, I have not used the rotisserie feature again.

Dishwasher - NO, NO, NO! This thing is a disaster! One hair can shut this thing down. Literally, it has a sensor that if one hair gets in the filter, it will stop the machine. Then you must drain it, pull out the bottom rack and clean the drain filters, looking for the offending hair or crumb. WORST dishwasher I have ever owned.

Vacuum - yellow upright with Good Housekeeping seal of approval. I like this vacuum.

Service issues
by: Anonymous

I have a Miele 4840 washer. It worked O.K. for 2 years, washed clothes fine. Does build up mold on rubber ring if you don't wipe it dry.

One day, it just won't start. Dealer who sold it says only Miele can help me. Closest Miele tech is 2.5 hours away and won't come. Local appliance repair man says he has had nothing but bad experiences with Miele "The Company" and will not even consider coming to look at it. Sears tech says basically the same thing.

My 10 year Miele warranty. Worthless.

Have not had problem with this Washer
by: Anonymous

I purchased this model almost 2 years ago moving from a traditional top loader. We have a 2nd floor laundry room. I have found the performance of this machine to be outstanding.

Yes, it is a bit loud on the spin cycle, yes if you have a very heavy and unbalanced load you get vibration during the spin cycle, but I had the same thing with my top loader. Just make sure to level the machine properly.

The difference from the old machine is my clothes are much cleaner, I trust it with my very expensive clothes, it uses far less water and detergent. BTW I will use the Persil detergent or woolite liquid based on the fabric. And the build quality is better than anthing on the market. The capacity, dependability and ability to handle many types of fabrics was a big selling feature for me. I have never had a problem with smell coming from the machine and will leave the door wide open after I am done and then leave it open a crack after the machine has finished drying internally.

The only time I have smelled anything is when my wife leaves a washed load in it for a day or so. It drives me crazy and results in the need to rewash the laundry. :(

We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teens. Laundry day will entail about 5 full loads which includes a load of darks, whites, colours, synthetics and misc. Although my wife complaines she has no time in the day to do laundry, I find that systematiclly doing all of the laundry in the house split into the above loads allows you to drop in a load do other things and return after an hour to move it to the dryer. This is easy and effortless as the machines do all the work.

The only maintence I do is check the filter once every 3-4 months for objects and run the Sanitize cycle with bleach once every 2 months to remove residual soap etc. from the machine.

I swear, If I were home all day and my wife were out working, not only would I have the laundry done, house cleaned, dinner ready and get in a round of 9 holes or golf I would also have time to look after her later in the evening and kiss her goodnight.

Miele is the premier washing machine company in the world. IF they made inferior products they would never have been able to build up the reputation they have after so many years. Trust me, If you are having any issues with this machine the problem probably lies somewhere between the controls and floor in front of the machine.

wrinles, mold and controls
by: Anonymous

Remember the old saying about keeping it simple? Not with Miele! Controls are too complicated and to get a "hot" wash cycle you have to run the machine for over an hour. Save on water but spend on electricity.

We have replaced the inner ring twice now because of the mold that grows. We leave the door ajar after every wash, but the water that pools in the well of the rubber ring just sits and allows mold to grow.

The spin is so tight it gets most of the water from the clothes to allow dry time to be less. However the clothes are rung so tight they’re wrinkled beyond belief

Spend you money on a different brand!

I agree that Miele Washing machine not up to par.
by: Karl

I wish I read these comments before purchasing my Miele Washer and Dryer. My wife heard that it is the "best"...Yea, best at smelling up our house. Just figured out today where the horrible smell was coming from (the washing machine). I am looking at trying to figure out a way to clean the rubber ring along the front. I would recommend a Kenmore over a Miele any day of the week. By the way, the person who posted the whinner comment has some serious issues.

Poor customer service
by: Marie

Purchased this washing machine two years ago and was told it was the best/top of the line by the sales person. Just recently the "Waterproof Activation System" message has shown and this shuts your machine down. You cannot use it until a tech comes out. It took 10 days for the tech to come out. The day he came out and repaired it, I went home to do laundry and in the second load, this message came up again and I couldn't use the machine.

Called technical support right away and the person told me they would arrange an appointment and he would call me back the next day. Of course he did not call back so I had to call back again. This new support person said he would set up a repair time as soon as possible and would call me back. Not!!!

I called back and was told that a tech was coming to my home that afternoon. No one had called me to tell me. I then asked to speak to a supervisor and that's when I got a call back. The customer service in this company is atrocious. I will never buy from them again for this reason.

destroys clothes
by: laura

For the price I paid for this machine ($2100) I would NOT recommend this washer. The first time I used the washer, it tore holes in the sheets. It took six weeks for the repairman to come to make some adjustments and then I was told the cause was the wrong detergent--not HE. Since the clothes were not getting cleaned, I actually stood and watched the machine during the wash cycle with only a set of sheets--turns out there is barely enough water to wet the clothes let alone clean them. Now another six week wait for a repairman. Miele is NOT the brand of washer to buy.

Run away!!!!!
by: emily

As a lifelong Maytag customer I was lured to Miele by rave reviews of the salesperson...big mistake. The machine literally shakes my entire house to the point that the dining room chandelier shakes. When I called for service I was told "my house was not well built" and that this machine is "too powerful for an upstairs laundry room". Shaking aside, although not easily overlooked, the machine does a sub-par job of cleaning and the clothes smell moldy if left sitting for over 2 hours.
My husband wants me to put the machine in the dump and it is only a year old.
PS...my house is 9,000 square feet and appraised in the 4 mil. range....you decide how well built it is. Run!

Whiners
by: Anonymous

I can't believe you whiners! How can you not figure out the controls on a machine this simple? Like my momma always said, there's no cure for stupid.

As far as the smell issues go, no smell here. I don't see water pooling up anywhere, and the few drops that do remain after a wash cycle quickly evaporate. You just have to make sure to keep the door slightly ajar after you finish a load of laundry.

If you have mold in your Miele and it smells, it's your own fault.

Buy something simple
by: L. Garner

If I can talk one person out of buying this machine, I will consider I have done a service to mankind. This washer is much too complex and the instruction booklet does not help in that it too is complex and unclear in its explanations. I have wasted untold amounts of time on trying to understand how this runs-to no avail. I would donate it to charity just to stop the pain but it turns out that the warranty will not be honored if I do so. Buy something simple!!!!

Good washer but bad customer service
by: Anonymous

Good washer but company service stinks.

Our 22 month old machine broke fri night.
Per the manual we had to call tech support which reopened Monday

they issue a trouble ticket and the repair branch calls 48 hours later.

They offer a tech visit next Wed- 10 days after it broke.

If it were Kenmore I could have had it fixed next day.

Poor design and loud
by: Anonymous

I have a house full of Miele products, dishwasher, doulbe ovens, warming drawer, etc.. This is the only Miele product that I would not recommend. The washing maching does clean well, but at a price. The inside plastic ring has to be wiped down after use, otherwise mold will form along with smelling up your clothes. There is always water left in the soap container- poor design.

The machine sound like a jet airplane landing when in the spin cycle. If you dont have a separate room with a door to close off the sound I would not recommend this machine. And the regular load takes well over an hour to finish. I have had the company out many times and they cant not do anything about the standing water and mold issue. Better to wait till they redesign this model.

The dryer is also loud. And the lint holder drops lint into a very deep pocket and you can not reach it to pull it out! The repair guy said to to buy a special tool and try to dig it out. Very poor design for a Germany engineering. I have had the pair for 1 year, live in Northern Calif, paid a fortune for them and would not buy them again.
