Maytag A482 (from the year 1984)

by Kathy
(Palmdale, CA, USA)

My parents bought us this Maytag top-loader as a housewarming present nearly 24 years ago. It has been amazing! It needed one very small repair (a part to help it balance) about ten years ago, and runs like a top!

Between two daughters and two dogs, we've done at least six loads a week.
Recently the washer's drum has been leaving rust stains on clothing if left in the washer overnight, so it's time to shop for a new one.

It frightens me to read reviews of all other brands in which owners complain of problems within the first year. I guess they really don't make them like they used to, and even Maytag isn't as dependable as the old models.

Maytag model A482
by: Matt

My Maytag A482 washer and matching DG483 gas dryer are GREAT!
Easy to service - well built - but the ONLY thing that ever needed service was recently the gas solenoid coil failed on the dryer - a simple $8.27 fix (kit)
The washer? - fantastic after ALL THESE YEARS!

---They just don't make 'em like this anymore---

If you've got one of these machines - HANG ONTO THEM!
If you're in the market for a new machine - FIND one of THESE!

Simple, reliable!

28 years and first repair
by: Phyllis

I have used this washer thru a family of two boys and it has out lived three dogs. I presently have a problem with the water level control. It is no longer available. Just ordered a used one on e-bay for $13.00 and hope it will solve my problem. If not, I unhappily will have to buy a new washer. I have been told, (by a salesman in an appliance store) to keep my present washer as long as I possibly can, because I won't get another as good. If you have a Maytag A482 keep it as long as you can and try e-bay for used parts for it.
Wish me luck, have a service manual and a used part and am hoping this will work.

My 1984 Maytag
by: Anonymous

I inherited my 1984 Maytag twin washer & dryer from my mother. The repair on these machines is so elementary that I do them myself. I think that is a premium with the older Matags, that they can be repaired by a handy person. The wholesaler from which I bought the parts, a belt for the washer, and an element for the dryer told me " hold on to your old Matyag because they are not made that way anymore and are made by Whirlpool and I can continue to repair them indefinetly". So I contiue with my harvest gold Matags.

Amazing after all these years
by: Anonymous

I bought a new Maytag Washer/Dryer in 1984. Today, 6/9/2011, the heating element went out in the dryer. That is the first time I had anything go wrong with the dryer in 27 years. The washer's pump had to be replaced in 2002 after 17 years but that's it. I don't want to buy a new one; the reviews on new dryers are awful. Hubby is going to find a heating element before we go that route!

Older Machines
by: Anonymous

I work on a lot of the older machines and sell them to people who don't have enough money to buy new ones. I keep the price as low as possible to help them out. I think a person is better off to repair your old one if it is not rusted out real bad or something. A lot of the old ones are porcelan and still look about as good as the newer ones with paint. I had an old Kenmore 30 years old last week it ran quiter with no shakeing than any of the newer ones. I have 3 newer GE washers I'm junking they are so cheaply made they are not worth fixing. The still look nice but thats all. I had a lady say she had a newer Whirlpool it went out. The repair people charged $65.00 to look at it and tell her to buy a new one. The parts would be $300.00 plus the $65.00 plus labor on top of that over $400.00.
I had an older Whirlpool for a $100.00 and she is happy as can be it works fine. Just the way I feel about it.gbyeen

1986 Maytag washer
by: Roxy F

I love my Maytags.
In 23 years I've only called a repairman once for the washer. Turned out I had to replace the lint catcher due to not being cleaned for 5 years (I didn't know there was a lint catcher). I felt completely dumb but then had I known I would have cleaned it religiously as I've always had dogs and cats. I'm looking for a new washer for Dad but have been frightened by all the reviews for EVERY brand out there. They really don't make them like they use to. I'm leaning towards the Centenial but still very reluctent to purchase without real in depth research. My maytag dryer is still running great (23 years) with only one service call to replace the heat element.
I wish I could stay loyal but due to hard times and cheaply made/warranted products, that loyalty has to be EARNED.
