L G Tromm Model # WM2077CW

by Joleen Wendinger
(New Ulm, MN)

I have been experiencing on-going problems with our washing machine ever since we purchased it.

The first week I already noticed a very foul smell coming from the gasket area of the washer. I was told this is a common problem and that I would need to wipe it out periodically. Periodically has turned into every day I use it and it still smells horrible.

More recently, the detergent cup and softener cup does not empty of the water contents so I have to pour it into the sink each time before adding the detergent.

I was told by repairmen and also LG that I have to use the correct H E detergent and I have done this from day one. Now they want to blame it on our water softener and our "farm" water. First they told me that farm wells don't have enough water pressure. Why isn't this stated in the handbook? We never would have purchased one. It should state, "PLEASE DO NOT SELL TO FARMERS"! I think L G does not know HOW to fix their "lemon" and therefore they blame everything on the consumer.

I've tried everything from tablets to clorox to remove the foul odor and nothing seems to help. I was told to leave the washer door open. Not only is this a safety hazard for small grandchildren but also I take the risk of someone getting caught on the door and injuring themselves or breaking the door off.

I was trying to explain to one of our repair people what was going on and how unhappy I am with our washer and he said, "Don't complain to me. I'm only here to fix it. It's L G's problem and we get lots of complaints on it.

I am very unhappy with our washer and would not recommend this brand to anyone.

Smell from the Washing Machine
by: Destin Mike

I also found I was having a foul smell and found I had to clean the entire inside of the rubber gasket.
I finally found that if I put a rag between the gasket and the the drum, I could hold it there and then just use my hand to rotate the drum and eventually get all the scum off. I think the smell is coming from the crevice between the drum and the solid rubber that surrounds it.

I also found that the clothes will start smelling if you use too much soap. Less is better. You can run a load of clothes and DON'T put any soap in the load and then look at it when it is in the wash or rinse cycle and if it looks like it is loaded with soap - it is from the soap residue in your clothes.

Good luck - my machine has quit for the 2nd time and won't spin and the repairman said it was a common problem for this brand. So, time to change to Kenmore or some other good American brand.

Did you ever know your mother or grandmother's washing machine to quit? They were just build to last in the "good old days".

by: AJ

I have had this machine for 6 years now and never had a problem with it. The house shakes when it spins at the highest speed but thats a house problem not washer. I just use the next speed down.

Also for those of you who says it smells? seriously...clean the gasket, it takes 5 minutes once a month.

found the source of the stink in my washer!
by: Anonymous

I was pretty frustrated with my LG washer also as nothing anyone suggested to fix smell worked. ..

Let me start this by saying I HAVE PETS

Finally While cleaning the rubber I noticed the water recirculating? Orfice at the top center of the rubber ( hidden by a small tab of plastic) had some hair sticking it of it I pulled on it and a lump of fur and hair came out it smelled horrible like hair from your tub drain. .I ran an empty cycle and looked again and more hair came to the hole .. repeated this 4 times for a total of about a half cup of nasty hair and fur. .since this time no more stink or mold in the washer ..I am now very careful to shake out furry items before washing and check this office v often.. so far so good ..it has been a year.. hope this helps some people! Oh also the crease between the rubber and the White plastic next to the drum clean with qtip as accumulation of hair balls occurs here as well..

Hate this machine!!!
by: Dec

Don't know why I lived with this machine since 2007. I realized I hardly used it since someone else was doing my laundry until this past year. Hated it from day 1. Never cleaned our clothes and SHAKES the WHOLE HOUSE! We have to put on the most soiled setting and extra water and spin to get the clothes someone cleaned - always using maximum soap and as much as possible on HOT. This is terrible. I just finally called the company to complain. Said I have to have it serviced. This is no change from day 1 so why service it. I simply wanted to find out if we have a lemon and after reading the reviews it looks like LG just doesn't make good washers. I'm not spending any money on this machine. Will buy another brand and TRASH LG for making this machine and getting our money for nothing.

Just clean it?? hahahahaha!!
by: Anonymous

I owned one for 5 years and it started smelling within the first six months. I resent the poster who says to just quit being lazy and clean the machine. I had a repairman come out and tell me that was a common problem with that machine. I cleaned the machine regularly and frankly, if you spend this kind of money on a washing machine, you shouldn't have to worry about mildew.

As for thinking your clothes are getting clean, that's a joke. My husband would come home with heavily dirty clothes because of his job. This machine would never clean his clothes. I'd have to run the wash twice to even get them somewhat clean.

I replaced my LG with A $350 Whirlpool top loader and it actually cleans and I don't have to worry about cleaning the machine.

This model has extensive design flaws.

LG WMxxxxCW in General
by: Anonymous

I've owned an LG WM1812CW for 7+ years, and only just today the rotor position sensor needs to be replaced. For those with smell issues, like anything else you own, you need to clean it every now and then. You clean the crumbs out of your toaster, right? The hair out of your brush? Food out of your drain? Leaves off your car? This is no different - don't be lazy; clean the rubber gasket every now and then :). And for you folks thinking it takes too long to wash, try the "speed wash" option, which is probably similar to the "quick cycle" option on my model. The longest our loads take is about 40 minutes. We use the quick cycle for *ALL* of our loads, unless something is rediculously filthy. Give it a try to see if it helps. It is sad to see that overall, all manufacturers have gone down in the quality of their products :(.

Moldy Smelly Mess
by: Anonymous

Have had my Tromm front load washer for a couple of years.
1) Smells moldy always - I have to leave the door open to minimize the stink that never completely goes away. Also have a small laundry room and leaving the door open isn't convenient in the least.

2) Mold grows around soap dispenser. Have tried running bleach thru the machine - minimal help.

3) Often comes off balance - must rebalance.

4) water now drips from the door down the front of the machine.

Have read reviewers who offer up advice on how best to clean the washer on a regular basis - I didn't buy a washer to clean it. My old top load Maytag lasted for years with lots of use and little attention.

Overall - would never buy this brand again.

Water inside Dispenser and Bad Smell
by: Anonymous

1. Water inside Dispenser.
The Dispenser is designed with the blue cover to be intact. If the blue cover of the main compartment or other cover for each compartment do not close or push down completely, the water will not drain after wash.

2. Bad Smell
Assure to leave the door open for at least 24 hours to dry out the water remain inside the seal after wash. Run the wash empty with cloroc or other chemical solutions sold in Home Depot once a month.

Clean the filter and drain the water from the bottom left corner opening (see manual).

Good luck and enjoy the washer until it broke down.

LG Tromm Washer model WM1812CW slime problem
by: Anonymous

The LG Tromm front load washer is my first front load washer. I'm not pleased with it for the following reasons:

1. Does not use enough water to clean the clothes
2. Thick white slime builds up underneath the detergent drawer.
3. Have to empty water out of the detergent drawer before each load
4. Have to clean the gasket and door or it will stink. NEVER had this problem with my old top loaders
5. Have to empty filter at the bottom left of the NEVER had to do this with my old top loaders.
6. Too much maintenance required

"Stinky" came with the house.
by: Anonymous

I bought a house that had this model washer already in it. It cleans OK as long as you don't over load it. I use all of the different cycles with different speeds and length of cycle and all of that works fine. Again, DO NOT overload because it is designed to use less water and your laundry will not get clean if you overload. I can not use bleach b/c it runs down the front of the machine from the detergent drawer. "Stinky", that is what I call my washer, does indeed stink. It doesn't effect my clothes yet, thank goodness, but the machine itself smells like a mildewy moldy basement. I leave the door open after a load so that it can dry out but it still stinks. I would not recommend the LG Tromm to anyone, efficient or not, it's not worth it.

Stinky Laundry
by: Charlene

If you have smelly laundry, first clean out filter, second run a dilute solution ( pour into tub) of CLR through a hot water wash cycle, then a rinse. Do this about 6 months to 1 year depending on amount of use, keep detergent dispenser drawer and front door open when not in use. And wash in warm water.

My LG Tromm Caught fire last night!
by: Anonymous

I also was so excited to get a front loading machine and I have had all the same issues. The machine "o" ring seal is faulty and it leaks water onto the floor when washing. The machine always stinks of mould as dirty wash water lodges in the rubber of the machine and no matter how much you clean it, you can get to it. It never fills properly, only half of the laundry is even when when its done, and I am in the city so my water pressure is constant. It is noisy and rattles and jumps around no matter how much you balance the machine. I never spins evenly.

Then to top everything off, last night it caught fire... I thought dryers were what you had to watch out for, but now that the washer is pooched, I am dumping the dryer too.

I will never buy a front load again, what is shipped to north america is crap!

And Sears sucked in all of this too, they dont stand behind anything they sell. The dryer is just as bad, the "ultra quite" dryer rattles worse than a half empty garbage truck going over a cattle grate. The wheels that turn soften up when the dryer gets hot and when the drum cools the wheels get flat spots on them. so when you first turn on the dryer again, it sounds like you left your husbands steel toed boots inside it for the first 5 minutes... UGH!!! I hate both machines, pieces of crap, and Sears was just as bad, I will never buy LG or appliances from Sears again.

Time for a speed queen
by: Anonymous

My European wife was excited to buy a front loader like the kind she grew up with, after 3 years later we are throwing it away, it's a joke, she said where is the water, it only dampens everything, not like European models that fill half way, I know it conserves water but come on, it needs more, we haven't had the smell problem that everyone seems to have, but the random error code was too much for us, not to mention it takes 1-1/2 hr to do a load, she checked out a top loader speed queen, so today it's off to the store to get one, good luck with your lg crap, but sooner or later you will get something else

Give me back my old maytag. My daughter bought this for me thinking it was a great gift. I have hated it from day one. It is alway smelly and moldy. I takes hours for one load. One time a sweater on hand wash took two and a half hours... You cannot just spin water out of clothing. You cannot stop and add clothes. As soon as I can save up enough money I am buying a new top loading washer, do not buy a front loader.... especially this one... it needs to be in the metal recycle bin...

Never an Issue with mold smell
by: Anonymous

Wow I'm shocked there are so many bad reviews here! I purchased this washer and dryer duo in March of 2006, and have had 0 issues. The finish still looks new and the stainless drum and door seal are as new.

As far as the odor / mold issue, you MUST leave the door open on all front loaders after you use them. There is no way for enough air to get in and around the drum for it to property dry. If your worried about your children, pets etc, then don't buy a front loader as you will continue to have the same issues.

Love this LG was and highly recommend LG (now with steam!) to anyone.

LG NIGHTMARE
by: Anonymous

I have the lg wm2277hw front loader. I have owned it for 5 years and it has smelled from day one. I too have used cleaners and kept the door open to no avail. I have lived with the moldy smell for 5 years now but approximately two months ago, I noticed a strong chemical type odor in the garage where the washer is. The smell permeated into the entire house and it was so bad it was burning my eyes and nose. Not knowing what the smell was or where it was coming from, I called the fire department. They too could smell it and said it smelled like a chemical. They used their meters and could not detect anything or find the source. I then called the local health department and they too came with meters. They could smell it also but not detect anything or find the source. I began to think it was coming from my water heater or water softener. The smell was so bad that I replace them both. I still had the smell. All that was left was the washer, however I did not want to replace it if it was not the source of the odor. I unhooked it and covered it with plastic and sit it outside. I could not believe it - the smell disappeared. After a few days, there has been no smell inside and when I went outside near the washer, I could smell it. When I uncover it, it is so strong, it will knock your socks off. This has all taken place over the past 5 or 6 weeks. I have been so frustrated in trying to determine this awful odor. Today, I bought a top loader. Has anyone had any experience or know if the samsung high efficiency top loaders have an odor. I haven't been able to find out anything through an internet search. Also, does anyone know anything about a class action lawsuit against lg for their defective washing machines?

Slow, Moldy, LE Error Often, Needs Repair Often
by: Fed Up

I bought this machine when it first came out, I've had it for 5 years. Every load takes 1.5 hours, forever if you have 3 children and need to do laundry fast. Web advice states to use only about 1/5 of the detergent recommended by the marks on the machine. I have used only HE detergent in the proper amounts since day 1 and never had a load take less than 1.5 hours. DE error all the time, requires opening a plastic drain that must be sealed tight, very hard to open, need a hammer or wrench, must open approx every 2-3 loads, then you get all wet, water bursts out all over the floor every time. LE error happens and machine won't function at all. Replacement part costs only $2010 but requires 2 people to fix, and both need serious muscle power, 1 to hold drum to stop from spinning, other to release bolt on back quick is loktite on and very hard to get off, man power needed to fix. Then you have to pull a high powered magnet off the back, no easy feat. Not to mention pull machine out from wall. Fixed Hall Sensor about 4 months ago, now going to try again. There's no way that I would pay for these repairs, especially at $300 avg service fees, wouldn't it make more sense to get rid of the machine? If laundry is not removed from machine immediately, it gets moldy. Washer never mixes bleach into the cycle, ever. Bleach remains in designated bleach cup, which is unfortunate when you need bleach with this mold loving machine. I can never do an overnight load, god forbid if I forget a load is in there for a day, it must be rewashed and bleached due to the mildew. There are always tons of back loads piled up in the basement, since it washes so slowly and can't be put to use overnight due to the mold. I am going to fix one last time with a new hall sensor, ordered from a different supplier this time (last one did have red dot). If it lasts less than six months, it's new washer time -- and it won't be an LG! (Maybe not a front loader either). BTW, just got rid of my LG dishwasher, and the ice maker on my very pricey LG fridge never worked. And no, I NEVER buy extended warranties, they shouldn't be a necessity on a real machine. The washer my home came with was built in 1982, worked until I bought the LG.

Maytag and other brands of upright washing machines were loved by my friends so I figured all uprights were the same; NOT!
LG SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES! This WM2077CW is a disgrace! Every person I know that has one feels exactly the same way! The smell is revolting and disgusting. You have to clean it daily and pray for serenity. The gasket is always filthy. The design is flawed and LG should recall ALL OF THESE MACHINES!

Agree with all of the above
by: Anonymous

I've owned my 2077CW for almost 3 years. I've never had to have it serviced, but am extremely unhappy with this purchase.

Water gets trapped in the rubber seal, with no way for it to drain out (hmmmm, seems like a huge design flaw). My seal is hopelessly and disgustingly stained and even thought I try to wipe it out after each use, it doesn't help.

I had the same problems with fabric softener as referenced below, and finally quit using it awhile ago. I also learned that adding white vinegar to each load got rid of the musty, mildewy smell on all of the clothes.

This has been a huge disappointment to me and I will never, ever again buy an LG appliance.

I can't believe all of the negative comments. I've had my washer and dryer for over 5 years and have never had an issue.
As far as the smell, about every 6 weeks, I clean the grey seal(on the machine, not door) with Q-Tips dipped in bleach, and each time there's hair,dust/dirt, and other small particles.
One more thing I heard from a friend who purchased a GE and had problems the first month, that her repair man said it only broke because she was putting in small loads.

Great Washer!!!
by: Ken

Have had it now for six years with no mechanical or electrical problems at all. Cleans much better than a traditional top loading machine.

I have well water with sulfur. I noticed after using it for awhile a musty or mildewy smell.

Once every two or three months I clean the inside of the door gasket with bleach and then run the cotton cycle with the heavy soil option using hot water and an extra rinse. I fill all the dispensers with bleach and then pour some bleach into the drum before starting the cycle. I also leave the door open when not in use. This eliminated the musty or mildewy smell problem.

Poor excuse for a washer
by: Arnie

I echo everyone's voice on this being a poor excuse for a washer. I have owned many washers in my lifetime but this LG TROMM is the worst. It doesn't clean the clothes, it always causes your clothes to stink and it needs constant repairs from the leaky water valves ( from supposedly too high water pressure but nothing has ever done this before) to the sensors going bad. Don't spend your $1K on this machine. It will only lead to trouble.

solenoid valve and fabric softener
by: NH Mom

I rated my Tromm a 3 star beacsue we have had it serviced 3 times since buying it in January 2007. Luckily, we never had to pay for the service calls beacsue we purchased the 4 year extened warranty beacsue we don't trust applianaces anymore! My husband did the last repair because of coure, the extened warranty ended 2 months ago. So, for those of you that have water filling up in your tray or it is not rinsing out your tray comparments then it is beacsue the solenoid valves on your cold or hot water is are the brinks of dieing. Once your washer fills up with water after your load is done, you will know. My washer did, I researched the problem, bought the $60 part at the local applianace store, and my husband installled it with no problem. Now, the my laundry tray has no water at all in it copartment and no water is leaking into the washer after if is done or off. Based on the manual the FE or PE error should have popped up, but they never did. I have had water in my compartments since day one, so obviulsy the solenoid valves were faulty form the beginning. I called LG a week after it was deliver who stated all was ok even though water was in my trays and the manual said only little droplets were ok. he said my well water may have sediments in it cloggin the drain up but yet he said all was ok vene after not finding any sediment in my filter. So, we moved to Alaska and the same thing occured again over and over. Then my washer gave the code that states "call for service" over Thanksgiving weekend when all 5 of us had a stomach virus - just awful timing! The tech said this regualtor for sensing the temp. was dead and was usually from too much suds from customers using non-HE detergents. I of course, disagreed. He replaced the part and then it died again 30 days later even form me using ONLY HE detergents - MAN!! I have only ever used HE detergents or Ecos detergent, so if this wsher is senstyive to amounts then that it a manufacturer error. I also can not stand the slime and mold biuld-up in the rubber seal area. UNacceptable. I started using the extra water cycle to help wash out the softener since the regualar setting can not rinse it out enough. I also just switched to vinegar for my rinse cycle. I thorouhgly cleane dout my rubber seal with scoulding hot water and bleach util it was normal again and will never use fabric softener again. Vinegar cleans your clothes and wsher at th same time and they come out clean with NO smell. The clothes are soft too! I use a frbric sheet in my dryer to get a little fragrnace going on the clothes. I hope this helps all!

Odor
by: Anonymous

We've used this model washer now for 5.5 years. After a short time the towels and other clothes had the mildew smell many have described. Tried frequent bleaching and using the washer cleaning tablets as well to no avail. After a lot of internet searches I found some comments about the use of liquid fabric softener in these types of machines. Sure enough the very load after we stopped using liquid and swiched to dryer sheets the smell went away completely. I don't know why nor do I care. It just worked. We still clean the tun with bleach every now and then ( every month or so), and keep the door slightly ajar. We bought two small suction cups with hooks and a small metal chain to keep the door open when not in use. All from walmart; attach one cup to the washer and one to the door, then remove links from the chain and connect the ends. Try it, it really did the trick for us. Can't be happier with these machines now after 5+ years of use.

I too have an LG tromm washer and dryer and have had the horrible slime and odor problem. To resolve this problem, I clean the seal occasionally and always leave the door open. My biggest problem is that the washer (on a Normal load - high speed spin) wobbles all over the place. It is half way across the laundry room by the time the load is done. I have to set the spin speed on "medium". Yes, I have tried adjusting the legs.

I have the Stainless Steel washer and dryer. My clothes do not stink nor does my washer. The only time the clothes stinks is if I leave the dark load in longer than it takes to wash them. Whites and colors come out clean with no odors. I do have the grime around my rubber seal though. I have a problem with my bleach and detergent cup not emptying water out and have to poor it out. I do use HE detergent and bleach. I have mold build up inside the detergent drawer and on the inside of the drawer cavity. I do clean it with bleach but it doesn't come all the way out. My detergent cup is caked with hard white buildup I try to clean it out but cannot get it out due to the hardess. not sure if it is lime in my water or just detergent ingredients.

Its' so water conserving you won't see water in it...LOL
by: Anonymous

I have to agree with all the unhappy comments above.
I hate this model and I'm stuck with it because LG would not allow HD to take it back not even right away after the first week of use - and major disappointment... I bought it because of all the water conservation energy saving etc. propaganda they advertised it with... It conserves water all right!!!! I called the company the first time i turned it on, since i couldn't even see water just damp cloths in it.... They said that that's how it conserves water...LMAO...They were advertising also that it will be gentler on the clothes than the top loaders... I have to say that I used to be able to pass down my kids clothes even after years of washing them in my old-old top loader.... Now all my clothes are destroyed in no time... ( like beating damp fabric and rubbing throwing it around could be gentler than floating it in water...)I have ended up using the hand wash cycle first(since that's the only way to really WASH the clothes) for everything then I do an extra rinse and spin on the regular program...- so much for "conserving" anything... - I grew up with Front loaders in Europe but those filled up like an aquarium with water unlike this garbage...
"Life is good" and must be very funny too for LG laughing at all the losers who bought into this cheap machine... They do have better ones but they should admit their guilt and allow us to trade in these pieces of junk especially right after the purchase when one realizes that she bought a useless piece of C....lunker... The smell... I wont even go there.... but make sure you never close the door when the machine is not in use... that helps somewhat... ( It's just such a horrible design that I'd like to take back the engineering degree of whoever designed it!!!!, you never have enough water in it to wash through the inside of the box, so even those tide cleaning solutions are useless....

Hopefully we have found a fix to the smell & grime
by: Linda

We purchased our LG Tromm Front Loaders in 2007 from HomeDepot and was told it was the best washing machine we could purchase. We have also experienced the grime and smell. The only way I have managed to keep our laundry from stinking is by cleaning the rubber seal (by pulling it back and cleaning behind it with Lysol and paper towels. If you can get between the drum and rubber seal, you can remove a large amount of nasty slim). I faithfully use powder Oxi-Clean with half the amount recommended HE Laundry detergent and fabric softener. So far this is the only thing that has worked for us.

Costumer service response:"You don't see water in it because it's a water conserving washer" LOL
by: Eva von St.Nick

I have to agree with all the unhappy comments above.
I hate this model and I'm stuck with it because LG would not allow HD to take it back not even right away after the first week of use - and major disappointment... I bought it because of all the water conservation energy saving etc. propaganda they advertised it with... It conserves water all right!!!! I called the company the first time i turned it on, since i couldn't even see water just damp cloths in it.... They said that that's how it conserves water...LMAO...They were advertising also that it will be gentler on the clothes than the top loaders... Replacement Gasket?
by: Anonymous

I purchased my LG in July of 2009. Like others noted in this thread, my laundry just stinks. I called LG and they indicated they have a "new and improved" gasket to address the mold under the rubber. My guess is that is the source of the odor. Has anyone tried the replacement gasket and does it work? If I can't get any positive feedback, I'm just ditching this washer and buying a good old top loader.
Thanks

Very disappointed
by: Anonymous

I echo all of the NEGATIVE comments that have been made about this washer and customer service. This is the first frontload washer I have had but, I don't remember what it was like to have clean smelling clothes any more. I've had this washer and been puting up with this problem I purchased it in 07. If I could afford to buy a toploader, I would dump this one. Every load I do has a terrible smell. I am nomally throwing my clothes back in the dirty clothes hamper as I'm folding them or pulling them out of my drawer. I can't believe that as much as I paid for this washer, I have the problems I do. Surely, the LG R&D department was aware of this problem before puting it out on the market. I wonder if having a stainless steel tub would have had the mold and mildew problem that the plastic tub does;I wouldn't think so. But, as I stated, this was my first frontload washer. If anyone has a stainless steel tub, have you had this problem?

horrible horrible machine
by: Anonymous

After 3 horrible years of dealing with this LG machine, the mother board fried and would cost me over $500 to fix. Well, I went and bought a Maytag toploader for $350 and have now had it for almost a year and couldn't be happier!! I love the sound of the water abundantly flowing into the tub and listening to the agitator as it CLEANS my clothes. I almost forgot what it was like to have clean smelling towels!

Why should anyone have to buy something to clean their $1k washer? You pay that much for a washer and it should clean clothes. I HATE LG and will never buy anything made by them again.

LG front load is a horrible machine and they do not care!
by: Diane

I bought a LG front load washer last november. I was very excited to get my new washer and dryer; however from the very first load I knew something wasn't right with the washer! It clangs and makes horrible noise , tangles my clothes in knots, I have tried everything . I have washed every size load, it still does it, I have had to have service on this machine three times with them telling me the problems are normal!! No they are not , I had a front load Kenmore set that lasted for 14 years without ant problems. I bought the LG because the salesman at home depot told me it was tbe best set. I should have just made them take them back! Now it's been too long. I cannot wait until this pile of junk is paid for so I can replace them!! I would never recommend LG products! The problem you are having with smell might be ale Ed if you switch to powder he laundry soap. It fixed my daughters problem and hers was really bad. Also us the washer clean cycle with tide he washer cleaner.. Good luck.

I Hate The LG Tromm
by: Anonymous

We purchased this washer in December 2006 and from day one this washer has never cleaned our clothing. The washer smells horrible and I have to wash things twice, sometimes three times to get things clean. I have always used the correct detergent, and have tried everything, but my clothes do not get clean, my towels smell horrible, and I have to leave the door open overnight to air it out. Still this is the worst washer I've ever owned. So much for energy efficient washers. I want a good old fashioned, fill up the tub with water, agitator in the middle, washer.

Solution for all the smelly washers/towels

Hi there,

I, too, had the problems you are describing but it was my towels that were smelly as well as t-shirts, etc. I found a wonderful product called smellywasher. If you go to www.smellywasher.com, this will give you all the details on what the problem is. I have used this product and can happily say that all is well at my end. Have recommended this product to many many friends.

LG, you need to stop making products. Period. You don't care about your customers, you care about the almighty dollar! An outstanding company would stand behind their products and take care of their customers so they would continue to be a customer. I will never buy anything with those initials on it ever again and I will make sure everyone I know doesn't own an LG product as well. To go through something like this has been extremely upsetting, but to continue to go through unnecessary crap to prove your washer malfunctioned (I even have the repairman that witnessed it) is the worst customer service I have ever heard of. At one point, like 3 weeks into this, the legal department asked me "what cycle was your washer in when it leaked?". I wanted to pull her through the computer and choke her! I said: First of all, it wasn't in a CYCLE and it didn't LEAK. It turned itself on, filled with water, pushed the door open and continued to poor water into my house. If you want to know what CYCLE my washer was IN, ask the WASHER! I HAD IT ON OFF!!!!!!!!!!

I will never buy another LG product
by: Anonymous

In 2007 I researched and found the LG to be top rated. So off we went and purchased the LG Tromm washer and dryer. From the very beginning the clothes always had a foul order not a nice clean smell just yucky. Then it happens every once in awhile I would get error codes had to unplug and replug and such. Then the drain motor goes and the extended warranty people tell me it takes three weeks for the parts to come in. Okay three weeks of going back and forth to the laundry mat while I have one wonderful washing machine at home thank God it was not winter (May 2011) now mind you we already had service a year earlier for the door not closing right. Also I think the bleach never goes into the wash the front of the machine is rusting. For some reason my drawer (on the bottom of the machine the storage drawer) has to be pulled open with effort. Now we have the message that the door is not closing so again I am off to the laundry mat (July 2011). Please if just one person is out there and will listen save yourself from this mess and do not buy LG!!!! Now we wait another three weeks!!! Oh and it always has a small leak from the front door bottom.

Great washer with gross gasket design
by: JCW

Love the washer, but the gross gasket/seal that surrounds the door to keep it water tight is really nasty. I wonder if they redesigned it since my model was made (WM2077CW) because water and other sticky yucky stuff accumulates in the bottom and just sits there unless you get it out with a towel. I leave the door open when I'm not using it but there are still black stains on the rubber itself as well as debris and repulsive stuff at the bottom.. I've used the washer cleaners but that didn't seem to affect that in any way. I've seen online that there are door boot parts to replace with and without a drain. Not sure if the one with the drain would fit this model. From what I've read, talking to their non-customer service wouldn't help me at all. It works fine, but the icky rubber isn't very well designed. Do all front loaders have this problem?

It just seems there is no real protection for a customer anymore. You spend alot of money on these appliances and it seems it's always a crap shoot. And I can't reallly say one company is any better then another.

worst LG Tromm
by: Julia

We've had this high-maintenance monster for 2 years. We use HE detergent only, run the Tub Clean cycle twice a month, wipe the inside drum with the cotton cloth after each use, always keep the door open, when not in use, wipe the rubber seal each time, use the hot water option only, even with the dark clothes, clean the bottom drain regularly and rarely add fabric softener. It still leaves the brown spots on white clothes, which are impossible to wash off and it still smells. Buy the top loader instead and not from LG!

LG Tromm Sucks
by: Terri K

I have both the LG Tromm Washer and matching Dryer. I love the dryer and hate the washer. As I sit here on my laptop typing this, I smell something that reminds me of an old damp cellar. It is me that smells like an old damp cellar!! I hate my LG Tromm Washing Machine! After taking a nice refreshing shower I get to dry off with a nice fluffy towel that stinks to high heaven of mildew then I get dressed in clothes that smell horribly of mildew.Consumer Reports rated the LG Tromm Steam Washing Machine #1 and that is what convinced me to purchase it. The only thing that I can figure out is that Lg made a deal with Consumer Reports and they get a commission for each LG Tromm Washer that is sold.No way in hell could this washer be rated #1. I want my money back!!

sulphur smell
by: Anonymous

My washing machine has the same odor problem. I have always used HE soap and always kept the door open even though everyone thinks I am crazy to do this. I have used the tide washer cleaner and the tablets sold by the LG repairman and nothing has worked. I notice the smell at the rinse cycle at 18 to 19 minutes when I have set the wash for a 28 minute cycle. They showed me the panel at the bottom to remove the cover and rinse the filter and I have done that, too. The smell dissipates after a few minutes, but the laundry never smells good and I have tossed out towels thinking I did something to them. I am so disappointed and probably will replace the machine even though it cost plenty to purchase. Never an LG product again. If anyone gets LG to acknowledge and/or fix the problem, please let me know. Thank you

Mildew Smell
by: M. Harding

My wife used to blame for the smell of my towel because she tought I was using it too long or hanging it incorrectly somehow, then she noticed that all of our towels were smelling very mildewy. This is a bad washing machine that has been poorly designed to allow mildew to form inside the door seal. To make things worse I cannot easily see a way to remove the seal to clean it well. Simply put do not buy an LG unless you want your towels (and probably yourself) smelling like some sort of fungi.

Mold and mildew
by: Lori DeLeo

Mold and mildew throughout washing machine. this is definitely a design defect. I believe that the problem stems from the boot, or gasket around in inside near the drum. If anyone goes out and looks at the newer models, they have "corrected" this problem. The lip of the boot is shorter, which allow the air to circulate and dry the boot. Mold once in a mchine, is very difficult if not impossible to fix. The whole machine, wherever water touches it has to be cleaned. LG wants to grant complimentary drum cleaning which is to include a power wash of the drum itself, which means that the service company has to completely take apart the whole unit, which they won't do because all they get paid is a flat rate of $75.00 from LG to do it and it would be a day long project. When they (LG) can't anyone to do this service they resort to I'm sorry, out of warranty. Poor customer service, they read from scripts, and they sound like stepford wives. For anyone interested, there is a class action suit against LG starting in New Jersey

I bought a used set (washer and dryer) of LG TROMM from a guy. Installed and have used for about a month now. Soap dispenser leaking occurred a few times so far. Starting to notice "that smell" too. Going to start to leave the door open between loads. Got an idea about rigging a little gasket on the bottom of the dispenser drawer.

Did you know LG (meaning Life's Good) is a marketing tag and the machine is actually made by General Electric (GE)? Did you also know that the President just appointed a GE exec to head up our country's business and tech initiatives? After knowing rhis now doesn't that make your LIFE GOOD?

Having the LG Tromm WM2077CW, this is the worst ever. I've had problems with it from day one. Now the soap does not fully dispense and when I add the fabric softner ( at the beginning of the cycle) the softner goes right in with the soap. I will NEVER buy any LG again. I have taken out the dispenser and ran it through the dishwasher ( no help) So now it looks like I'll have to take the top off and look and the hoses. This POS is a pain in the butt!!

Not a bad unit
by: Chris

I just picked up a set of these on Craigslist for $250 with pedastals. What I deal..As with everyhone else I had the horrible smell coming from the gasket and a lot of slime too from obvious neglect from the past owner. The unit had been sitting in storage with the door closed for about a year. The set is approx 5 years old. I cleaned the crap out of it with bleach, drained the hose at the bottom several time and still had a mold smell. I then took off the rubber door gasket and cleaned it thoroughly and it was dirty! More grime on the inside edges were the gasket was. Was going to order a new gasket but the old one cleaned up really nice. Pain in the butt to get the inner metal O ring back on but now no more smell. The key is too leave the door ajar after washes so it can dry out inside. I see a lot of complaints about doing this but it makes perfect sense to leave it open. By closing the door, you are sealing water in a water tight location...Of Course its going to smell after awile, the water can't evaporate...Mine smells like detergent now and look like new..It is super quiet and cleans great...

LG Tromm SCAM
by: Anonymous

Had I known that LG would not stand behind the products it sells, I would never have purchased the LG Tromm WM2077CW for my retirement home. And, would have gone back with MAYTAG, which provided service for my family of 7 for over 15 years without one problem. 1) I began experiencing problems with the LG Tromm in the 1st month, I was not informed upon purchase that the Washer door must remain open to prevent odors and prevent the rubber around the drum at the door from mildewing, to me this causes an extreme SAFETY HAZARD especially when you have curious grandchildren visiting.2) Less than 6 months later the Detergent Compartment would not open, my husband had to pry it open with a screw driver, which destroyed the cap for the fabric softner compartment. 3)Now I am receiving an FE Code, which I have just learned at a minimum will cost me around $250 (parts and labor) to fix the water valve. I did call LG to discuss these issues, as each incident occurred. Each time requesting information from LG for recalls. And, due to the high volume of customers experiencing the same problem(s) points to flaws in the design, inadequate quality standards/testing by LG and NO CUSTOMER SERVICE or customer focus.I was extremely disappointed to find LG does NOT stand behind the products they sell, and its advertising of these products was fraudulent. LG has successfully SCAMMED many innocent customers, and should be held accountable for its actions! Whatever happened to CONSUMER Advocates????

Let Me Pile On
by: Craig in CT

I bought my LG washer a couple of year ago. I have had multiple service calls on it, and of course, I have the same awful smell coming from the washer as everyone else has complained about. I only use high efficiency liquid soaps and I never use fabric softeners. I also occassionally run an empty cycle with hot water and bleach, and I still have the issue. I opened the panel on the lower left corner of the washer where the pump filter is and cleaned that (the smell that came from the opening was horrible)but still not luck. I plan to search the web for the class action lawsuit since this type of issue with a $1000 washer machine is unacceptable. I like the style of many of LG's products, but their dependability is less than satisfactory, and their service flat out stinks. I will ultimately end up going back to a top load washer, and it wont be from LG. I also intent to contact the Attorney General of CT to see what he can do.

LG Front Load Washers
by: CraiginCT

Well, I have been waiting to hear back from the Connecticut Office of the Attorney General on an inquiry I sent in December. I don't know if class action lawsuits are filed by state or some other boundry, but I am very interested in being involved since the problem is not going away. I did find a product made by Clorox that helps with the smell, but we should not have to do this, and pay extra for a product so that our $1000 washing machines don't smell like mold. Disappointing as LG does not seem to care. I guess "Life's Good" for them, but not so much for their customers.

Class Action
by: Disappointed Val

We bought this washer because we thought we were getting "the top of the line" product. We were wrong! Not only did the Home Depot salesperson know there were issues with the model before he sold it to us, but LG was aware also. We have done everything recommended and then some, but we still experienced mold and smells. Also, the washers do not clean well!
A lot of us had just given up, but all of us have worked too hard for our money to just let LG screw over us! A class action was filed in 2008 for our exact complaints. I went to the website this evening and sent an email inquiring about the status. I recommend you do the same and let's make LG pay us for their "lemon" washers! Why should we pay! Please go to: http://chimicles.com/case/lg-front-load-washing-machine-moldmildew and inquire.
LG and Home Depot are banking on us laying down and taking it. So what are we going to do?

official TCL tub clean cycle selection essential
by: Sue

Hi - own the LG Tromm as well and thought i was doing everything possible to keep the mildew out with the wiping and propping the door open, and getting a bit frustrated. Noticed disgusting material on the OUTSIDE of the drum when poking around the rim.

But discovered yesterday I wasn't actually using the 'TUB CLEAN" custom function button properly. Have to push the custom option and then the tub clean button right at the very beginning. If you try to do it after turning the machine on you will just get "extra rinse" function as it shares the same button. And the extra rinse doesn't actually clean the tub.

When it is actually on the right cycle and working, the display says TCL and the washer fills to the right level to clean out that front section by the rubber and swishes out the space between the inner spinning drum and the outer drum. Running a regular clothes cycle even on sanitary hot doesn't seem to soak and swish these spaces out properly. The manual says during TCL it will tell you when to add bleach but I didn't see that on the display. Ran this once with some regular dishwasher powder, and then once with a bit of bleach.

The water inside was a truly disgusting brown colour from all the deposits between the inner drum and the outer drum that were cleaned out. Can't believe the difference after in how it doesn't smell like anything. Am rewashing all of my bedding and towels today and they have absolutely zero odor.

LG Tromm
by: Anonymous

We have had our LG for 3 years now and continue to have problems with random loads coming out with black spots all over them. At times we have a mold smell which disappears with using TSP and commercial citrus degrease liquid on the clean cycle. We do not wash greasy materials in the machine and only use HE detergents.

This is the third high end machine we have had in the last 10 years. The first was a Bosche front loader. It worked great but the capacity was too small for our use. The second was a Fisher Paykel. The FP was a top loader and was an eye opener for me when I removed the innerdrum and saw what was gunking up the outer drum. I believe that most washing machines collect the dirt from the clothes around the outer drum.

Both the top loaders and the front loaders. If you ever see it for yourself you will not wash wash cloths, towels and cloth napkins again without bleach. You are just recycling dirt from one pair of underware to your other clothes. I am about to try using Hydrogen peroxide in the clean cycle and perhaps in the rinse cycle in addition to regular cleaning. I am not happy with LG but then I am not happy with most of the others either. Maytag had the same problems with their front loaders too.

Hate this washing machine
by: Anonymous

This washing machine has been horrible from the day we purchased it. The vibration and the noise have always been horrible but Sears wouldn't take it back. We've levelled it, had it serviced, built a special platform for it - still horrible vibration and noise.

Like other reviewers have said, you have to leave the door open all the time to prevent odor. You have to wipe out the gasket, which is nearly impossible to do completely. As a health professional it grosses me out to see the grudge that is on the cloth when I wipe out the gasket - can that be good for our clothers or for our home?
Now the bearings are gone and it will cost over $500 to fix it :( So now we're buying a new machine and I will NEVER have another LG appliance in my home! The serviceman said he sees tons of problems with LG washers but now I don't know what brand to get. But it sure won't be an LG!

LG Tromm WM2077CW
by: Lise

We bought a LG Tromm washer about 6 years ago. We had an older top load model washer and dryer that was working fine but we decided to treat ourselves with a front-load washer and dryer. We picked the LG Tromm 2077 set because it was an ultra-capacity model and it was super quiet.

We really enjoyed having a front-load model. It was less rough on the clothes and the washer cleaned very good. The problem that I found out was a constant smell in the washer so we started to leave the door open when we weren't using it. But about 2 months ago my washer started to stop and indicated an LE Code. So we tried to find the problem, so we went step by step.

1. We unplug the washer and wait for 1 hour and plug it again. It worked sometimes but we knew that was not the solution.
2. We cleaned the drain and the filter at the bottom of the washer. The drain was clogged, we unclogged it but the LE Code was still there.
3. A technician told us that it was the Hall Sensor. We bought the part ($25 cdn) and my husband fixed it. It was good for about 2 months and yesterday the LE Code came back and now the washer is doing exactly what it was doing at the beginning.
4. Today my husband phoned back the technician and he told him that after you change the LE Code, if the problem persists, the second thing to change is the main PC Board ($32 cdn) and if the problem persists after that it will be the Spader $100 cdn (situated just beside the Hall Sensor). So guess what? my husband will have to spend his evening before Christmas Eve trying to fix that washer. We are really disappointed with LG Tromm because our washer is only 6 years old and we already have to spend on parts. And one chance that I'm lucky to have a fixer husband because it would cost a fortune for services. I miss my old plain jane top load washing machine... :(

Door Error_Clean clothes
by: Florida-self fixer

I always get code (de) Door Error. Requires lots of slamming to reset- very aggravating. Ready to spend $60 for the locking switch and self install.
Smell is there and nothing you can do about it. We always leave door open and grateful that it is a separate room.
We have soft water which cleans anything 50X better than hard water (basic chemisty) but without it, I'd be back to Kenmore top load in a second.

WORKS FOR ME!!!
by: Anonymous

I have had my WM2077CW for about 6 years and the BEST advice I can give everyone complaining about it...

If you get an ERROR message...try unplugging it and waiting a few minutes and plugging it back in.

I haven't called a service man yet. I have 3 boys and husband. I do tons of wash and get error messages about once every 3 months since I bought the machince. My husband came home found it unplugged and plugged it back in the 1st time and it worked.

AND that is all I have done since then...6 years later it still works...I might have to take the clothes out and wait a day once this year, but it is still working.

AND FOR NOT CLEANING DIRTY CLOTHES...ADD MORE LAUNDRY DETERGENT!

Glad to get rid of this stupid machine!
by: Anonymous

Ok,

The machine overflowed out the back (yes there is an over flow on the back right above the motherboard) and it would cost $500 to fix. When the repairman took the back off you could see where the stream of water went down and into the motherboard. Ok, now you tell me, what kind of engineering is that? Ours was 5 years old and when we went looking for another machine, we looked at the LG Tromm models, not because we were considering one, but so see if they still have that design and YES they STILL have that overflow on the back (look for a small round plastic thing about 1/3 of the way down).

How absolutely STUPID is it that you have to leave the door open? OMG...you pay THAT much money and you have to leave the door open. My towels constantly smelled of mildew and my husbands t shirts got yellow under the armpits??!!! Never happened before.

OK, we decided we did high end before (didn't work)so this time we wanted to go back to top loader. We went with a Maytag Centennial for $350 WITHOUT water level sensor because the repairman said that all frontloaders have the sensor and don't use enough water to clean clothes well. The manufacturers are all going to the sensor for top loaders now and he figured that there would be the same problem. They go that way because of gov't regulations on water consumption.

I LOVE MY NEW WASHER!!! There is NOTHING like watching it fill with water and agitate and then the smell of clean towels not to mention they just feel nicer. The only bad thing about the new one is that it is noisy when filling up. This doesn't bother us since it's in the garage. We paid $350 for ours, but I saw Lowe's has it now for $250. Worth trying at that price especially since they have a 30 day return policy.

I HATE this machine!
by: Anonymous

This machine has been nothing but a pain since purchase!! What a waste of money when my last machine was still working but I wanted to splurge on a front-loader!! They got me! What with the continued smell, for which I do leave the door open at all times when not in use, and yes, it restricts movement through a very small walk-through access to the outdoor stairwell which has an amazing amount of traffic. I, and the children in my family, are constantly catching our clothes and ourselves on the door as walking and slamming it around. Someone is always closing it and I'm always having to open it so that it can breathe. It is the only thing I've found to perfectly alleviate the mildew smell that plagued us for a few years.

I'm particularly angry that my clothes are not clean. I pulled yet another load of clothes out of the dryer this morning and found the underwear were still dirty (yes, I used the appropriate detergent and warm water-these were not whites, but lights) and a Diet Coke spill did not wash out of one of my husband's T-shirts! Come on! I've had continuous problems with the LG actually cleaning but DIET COKE?! That should be a no-brainer! Those clothes washed for almost an hour at a higher than normal dirt setting then needed another rinse because I like to rinse them a second time. I should not have to inspect every single item that I put into that washing machine or put a booster pack into every load to make sure it cleans efficiently!

This LG Tromm makes me miserable and has from the beginning. We do not have an excessive amount of laundry (4 people with children who do not change excessively) and my laundry days can stretch into 5 days per week. That includes re-treating each item that has not been cleaned (and it is alot) and re-washing it at higher temp and longer time (which stretches laundry time awfully).

If you are a mom trying to keep your children in somewhat clean clothes, DO NOT CONSIDER THIS WASHING MACHINE! I'm telling you, it will make you sorry.

Front loaders
by: Anonymous

Yep you have to leave the door open when not in use... basically the smell you smell is unescaped water mixing with the dirt and grime left from washing the clothes... from day one leave the door open... it's a once you let it start to smell it's going to take a while to air it out. And don't leave wet clothes in there but if you get the settings right you'll find those LG front loaders clean really really well.
Also never use powdered detergent but with either powder or liquid/gel if you read the directions it shows that you need only about a third of a measuring cup for the average load. If you have really dirty clothes you need to not only select a higher dirt level but also fil it up to the line in the cup labled 1 or 2. Usually I used it somewhere between 0 and 1 on the cup with the HE liquid detergent and my clothes come out really clean...
By the way if the guy in the store tells you how you can stuff 22 full size towels in the machine and then come out clean... well they were clean to begin with because you should only fill it about half way so they can tumble in the wash. I can use the special cleaner for my wet suit and diving equipment and let it hang dry and I never have that aweful smell that everyone elses gets but you have to use a front loader without an aggitator on the handwash cycle or it will rip up your suit.
Don't waist the money on the euro 'fit a couple clothes in it machine, get the ultra size one and you can get the laundry done well but I will tell you that it will take 1:30-2:00 hr to get them cleaned well or you can do a quick cycle for about 30 minutes for casual wear items.
I completely recomend the front loaders and I've purchased the LG Tromm before and after 4 years of that I had forgotten how poorly the top loaders treat your clothes and don't clean them nearly as well.
PS. If you did get that smell developed in your washer then they sell some stuff that can go in there to clean it... if all else fails then purchase something like MiraZyme Odor Eliminator
and run it on a cycle that will just let the water sit there and tumble like hand wash and put a couple towels in it and that should help kill off any bacteria you've alowed to grow in there by leaving the door closed.

that Smell
by: Anonymous

We've had the LG washer for about 5 years now. We struggled at first with the smell for a few years until i figured out how to avoid it.

1. you have to leave the door open.

the only thing that works for the smell is my mixture of bleach, oxiclean , and (secret ingredient)---> TSP. yup tri-sodium-phosphate kills mold and mildew. try it.. you can get TSP at the hardware store usually in the paint section.. it's basically heavy duty powdered soap cleaner.

if you have a septic and leach field go easy ... they say it can cause algae bloom.. i use it every three or four weeks ... on a hot water load of dog towels.

other uses for TSP around the house: vinyl siding, backyard plastic furniture & kid toys, wood deck (before sealing).

3 repairs in 3 years . it smells. it overfills and now it wont even run , ive had enough , its going to the dump . Bought an lg dish washer , at the same time $980.00. it failed after 13 months of use lg repaired it under warranty after much complaining . it only took 3 months . failed again withgin 5 months of the repair, thats when i took it to the dump and replaced it with a $300.00 kenmore . its been going strong for 3 years . bought thier top of the line fridge , the overhead computer caught on fire and melted inside the refrigerator before tripping the breaker . LG was very suprised to here of this problem , funny , the repairman said they (lg) have revised the computer 37 times because of this problem .only problem with it now is that it dumps more ice on the floor than it holds every time i open the freezer door .The wheels that spin the dryer wore out in 8 months , sounded like a helicopter flying over as it ran .that repair was quick and simple and surprisingly still ok for now . these products were the most expensive pieces of garbage ive ever purchased .

I would never recommend bleach in every load
by: Anonymous

I put some bleach in the dispenser when I washed whites and in the next load, a little was supposedly left in the cup. The repairman blamed it on the linoleum floor in my laundry room and that the machine was not, in his eyes, level. So the next load with my husband's shirts ended up ruined with polka dots from bleach. So I would never recommend putting bleach in every load. I used to put bleach in a bucket and dilute it and throw it into the bottom of the machine before I washed whites, as per his directions. But now I never use bleach and put a measuring cup of oxiclean in the bottom of the machine only when I do whites and I have no spots and the smells I had previously have disappeared.

I have had this machine for 3+ yrs
by: Tracey

The machine stinks because its a front loader, it has to be sealed when you shut the door. So when not in use you seal in the water and it molds- here are some easy fixes:

Put in about 1/4 cup bleach with every load- even dark colors. It wont "stain" or ruin the cloths.

Run a hot water/full bleach fast wash 1 time a month. (i cant ever seem to do this, i seem to do laundry constantly so when i wash dog sheets/towels and rags it works too)

The reason i gave 4 stars- its not as good as the old washers that lasted 20+ yrs. w/o problems! Honestly- i think the issue is it looks pretty, just not practical- you really have to leave the door open.

I had a 20 y/o Maytag that was great except it was to small. I wish I still had it. I've had this LG washer for 5 years and it has cost me a fortune in repairs, not to mention the trouble of being without a washer with a large family! And then that horrible smell! I cannot believe we paid so much money for such a terrible product. At the time it was getting good reviews. I don't know how! I'm ready to send it to the landfill and go buy a simple basic washer. This one is too high maintenance for me. It definitely is NOT a workhorse!

Smelly you know what
by: Tommyt T

We've had this terrible smell for the last month in our hallway. We thought a mouse had somehow gotten into our house and died. Our washer and dryer (LG) are at the end of the hallway and we realized that is where the awful smell is coming from. I pulled the machines away from the wall and found nothing dead or causing the smell. We opened the door of the washer and knew then that the smell was coming from within the washer. The gray rubber seal was loaded with gunk. We cleaned it out along with the filter. This helped some but not completely. As the days go by the smell is getting worse. My wife cleans the rubber seal several times a week. The smell is still overwhelming.
I'm so glad to find this website and realize that this is a problem for many. Sorry for you all but at least some of you have some possible solutions. We will be trying the Afresh tablets and also the Oxiclean on our next loads.
If there is a class action lawsuit we will be part of it. I will tell the managers of our two local Home Depots and out Best Buy store that they should not sell LG products any more.

by: Family of 6

...Our Tromm LG has also ruined everything we have that has been washed in the machine. The smell is horrid. We have done everything instructed. Multiple bags of tablets for cleaning, vinegar, wiping down, leaving open, taking out of the house and spraying down with the hose. (Cleanest its been in a while, but still stinks) Had globs of gunk coming out of the drum and filter that looked like rotten food and mud. YUCK! We have spoken with about every retail chain about the problem and like others have been told we didn't know what we were doing.

I have made sure to tell everyone I know considering buying a front load LG NOT to buy one. Come look at ours. Don't waste your money. Buy a Kenmore or Maytag. Our Kenmore's lasted almost 20 years. I think there is a new marketing scheme to produce a product that won't last just so you have to go and buy another one in 3-5 years. What a scam. Worse part...LG does not care and continues to blame the user. Too many people with the same issues. UNHAPPY CONSUMER HERE!

Very Dissatisfied
by: Hate LG Washer

We bought the LG washer because Home Depot CLAIMED it was the top of the line! We have had problems with mold and smells since the beginning. We leave the door open and use bleach to wash it out but it still stinks! We went back to Home Depot and I talked to the same guy that sold us the washer and I told him about the mold smell. He told me that there is a gasket redesign and to call LG and a serviceman would replace the moldy gasket. By the way, the saleman was not surprised. I really believed he knew about this issue when he sold us the washer! When we called LG, they did replace the gasket (the gray seal around the door that collects water and mold) after waiting about a month, but they replaced it with the same gasket! I am so dissapointed with their customer service and the product. I would not recommend to anyone!

LG Is Trash
by: Barb Hnat

Our Washer was only 6 years old. My husband tried fixing it las night only to find out after purchasing the parts (hard to find), taking apart the entire machine, that the bearings seized. The washer is garbage. We have had repairmen come look at the machine for the exact same problems you are all having. The leaking was most annoying. Like one of you said, it wouldn't leak when the repair person was here. Well last night we found the problem...there was a rip in the rubber gasket. We didn't see it before because it was under a flap. We think it was caused by the incesent jumping of the machine. We had the repairman rebalance it everytime he came out. We finally gave up. We now have to purchase a new washing machine. I am considering going back to top loader.

I have found our problem we had no water going through to flush the system and clean the machine turns out for us that there is two filters on the intake hoses we cleaned out the one but noticed a very fine one inside it was pluged solid so we removed the second filter. Know my machine is like new.You may want to place a filter in line on the machine if you have hard water or a well. The water and soap flush through beautifully its like when I first got it.The machine seems to only leak when the kids or my Husband leaves wrappers and stuff it gets caught in the filter in the bottom corner I cleaned it and no more flooding. These machines are really nice but they are like a fancy car they seem to need alot of TLC. Good Luck P.s. We are on a well and it works great know.

The Consumer Gets Screwed Again
by: Craig in CT

I have to agree that the issue is not the detergent, but simply a poor design by LG. Anything we try is simply a bandaid that masks this design flaw. Affresh or any other strong scented cleaner (I use a product from Clorox) helps temporarily alleviate the stench, but you have to use these products at least once a month if not more often than that.

Face it everyone, we all got screwed purchasing this product from LG. LG does not care to make it right as it would cost them a fortune, and getting a Class Action Lawsuit is time consuming working with your state Attorney General. The best we can all do is find every possible website where we can rate LG products and make sure we share our discontent with as many people as we can.

Unbelievable. We have had many of the problems listed on this page; LE display, ++++smell Drum/drive problems,etc... Ours burned out after only six years! Cost to repair; about 3/4 of price to replace same model...forget that! The repairman stated We must have used wrong detergent...we tried several kinds. I might as well buy a $300-400 machine, at least I can buy 4-5 machines at that price. I would have enough washers to last me until 2030-2040. I will be buying another product in the future!

Crtappiest washer ever

We purchased this a few years ago and it wouldn't clean my husband's work clothes that get very dirty and after 6 mos, we had a repairman out who explained that because it uses less water, it wouldn't be able to clean his clothes. Since we had invested a ton of $$ in this machine, we just have dealt with it by doing extra presoaks. Well, just last week we got a LE error. Had the service man out and our washer is fried cuz there is an overflow valve in the back of the washer that drained into the motor and fried out sensor AND computer motherboard. When he pulled out the washer, you could see exactly where the water overflowed and the trail to the motherboard. This repairman said exactly what the other one did a few years ago. This machine isn't capable of handling really dirty clothes. What a crappy design for a piece of S#$t.

SMELL SOLUTION ~ HERE
by: Rich

Ok, I'm darn tired telling a 1000 forums what the problem is concerning the bad smell. So here I go AGAIN.

The smell is a chemical and enzyme reaction of your liquid detergent and your water quality.

DO NOT USE AN ENZYME DETERGENT!! There may be A person who might have a smell for other reasons, but trust me on this, its the ENZYMES in detergents, and I believe ALL liquid detergents have enzymes in them.

Your washer has two drums in it, the one you see spining and the other is outside of that drum. When the unit spins it throws the water all around the outter drum and the enzymes stick to it and BREED and the stench becomes terrible.
I KNOW THIS IS THE PROBLEM, I had a chemist AND a biologist clarify this. To clean the crap off in a Maytag, which caused the company to go broke and sell out to Whirlpool, required taking the inner drum out and pressure spraying the outside drum. OR, YOU CAN GO BUY AFRESH TABLETS which is nothing more than about four tubs of oxy clean. Use those tablets with the hottest water you have, run TUB CLEAN, and then use POWDERED detergent.

For the rest of this TERRIBLE MACHINE there are no answers. LG should have been sued, they are a TERRIBLE company with a terrible design. Isn't there a lawyer out there that will start a class action suit?

I have just turned down a service call for an LG Washer that won't complete it's spin cycle. I carry a 90 day parts and labor warranty on my work. This means if I replace a faulty timer or circuit board on one of these units, it seems from all the problems I have read about on some complaint sights, I will be going back for a re-occurring problem that may never be resolved and I am going to "tick-off" any customers that I come into contact with! I cannot afford to do that so I will remain content with the brands we are all comfortable with. We like to give Same Day Service as far as is possible, not wait 2 weeks for parts that may be the wrong part and then another 2 weeks for the right part to come. Yhe parts ware house that I deal with doesn't even carry spares so the cost of parts is going to be EXPENSIVE!

some success in ridding the machine of odor
by: Anonymous

I wrote in previously about a rotten egg smell at about the 19 minute rinse cycle on my machine. Recently I was trying to brighten my laundry by throwing a full scoop of OxiClean into the empty machine before loading my clothes. Then I put the liquid soap in the soap dispenser and ran the cycle with hot water. I do not fully understand the reason, but the smell has disappeared and has not reappeared after more than a month. I usually do this every time I wash whites, about once a week. Maybe it is something for others to try and see if there is any success. But my machine's smell was coming from inside the machine because I have always kept the door open when not in use and never had a mold problem in the door gasket.

Multiple Problems
by: Tommy

I'm not even 3 years in and I've had multiple problems with this unit.

First, there's the mildew issue on the rubber seal. Can't clean it -- the black stuff remains.

Second, there's the smell. My towels stink! I have to use a ton of fabric softener to mask the smell out of my clothes but my heavy towels continue to stink. Who wants to come out of a shower to a stinking towel? I threw out all my expensive heavy towels and bought new ones thinking I did something wrong. The only thing "wrong" I did was buying this machine! And those expensive tablets? Well, they don't "clean" that seal, now do they?

Third, it developed a leak. Thank you to the poster that gave me a clue as to where it's coming from. I put down towels to soak up the leakage while I run the machine to try and find out where it's coming from.

And finally, the kicker. It won't spin. It keeps giving me this stupid UE error, which means unbalanced load, but I get it no matter if the unit is full, half full or empty. It just won't spin after draining. And that's if it successfully drains correctly, which half the time it doesn't.

Lint trap clean. WHAT in the world is all that stuff coming out of the small drain tube? It stinks beyond compare.

Between the cost of the machine and the base pedestal, I'm in for around $1015. I'm ready to write that off, cut my losses and buy a new machine. My top load washer lasted much longer than this. In fact, the dryer I bought 8 years ago when I bought the top load washer is still running without issue. Maybe I should just go back to Whirlpool.

LG odor
by: Anonymous

To take care of the LG washing machine odor:

1. Occasionally wipe out the gasket area around the door with vinegar.
2. Don't close the door completely between washings.

What you're smelling is mildew that grows because you close the door completely between washings, creating a damp, dark, still area... just perfect for the growth of mold.

We bought our LG washer and dryer set in 07. We have already had two service calls (one for leaking under the bottom and one for a messed up drain motor). Right now I have an LE code and it stated in the manual to disconnect power and call for service.... GREAT> my washer if full of clothes and I can't get it to even drain. This is crap for a washer that is 2 yrs old. I had my old whirlpool washer for 10+ yrs and NEVER had a service call or even a problem. I gave it away for this 2000.00 piece of garbage. I also have smell issues and we have to leave the door open. Water constantly drips down the front from the seal which you can not clean eaisly. I have to take Qtips and hold the seal apart and wipe around it to get the sludge out. Any debris will clog the three holes in the front and is impossible to get out. If you have pets (we have two dogs and a cat) it does not clean pet hair off of clothes, towels etc. I am NOT impressed with this machine. Wish I had my old one back!

A miserable experience
by: John

We purchased our LG front load washer and have been happy with the cleaning results...until the motherboard simply stopped all functions. Black. No power.

Service person comes to house, "Yep, it's bad, we'll order you a new one." New part comes in, service person drives out to the house and puts it in. Washer motor is bad. That is why the one dollar fuse on the motherboard is blown. Two service calls so far.

After faxing the original purchase receipt to the it looks as though we will get the motor covered under warranty. Now we have a 400 dollar service bill on a 900 dollar washer.

I contacted the very mercurial and uncaring "service" representatives at LG. The service representatives are absolute marvels in adhering to the mantra "We do not care about your experience, our product, or that they will lose many thousands of sales in the future.

It has been a very miserable experience for us. We will never buy LG products again.

Our negative experience and recommendations will be shared with others.

by: Anonymous

I bought a used LG washer and dryer from an individual. From the day I got the washer I noticed an odor in the washer. Looked on the internet for solutions but found none that would work. Finally I decided to take it upon myself to find the problem (since I can not afford a new washer and dryer).

I noticed the mold on the gasket and thought that might be the problem (wrong). I completely tore down the washer. Removed drum from unit and disassembled the drum. The drum had a lot of soap scum on it, but that was not the real problem. When I looked at the back of the drum I FOUND THE PROBLEM. Where the drum was attached to the shaft behind the drum I found a load of mildew and nasty stuff. I had to remove the shaft from the drum and use a pressure washer to clean.

Finally I think the problem is solved after 5 hours of manual labor.

The Blame on You NOT THEM
by: Anonymous

I was recently in a store and told them about the problem this STINKY aweful washer has. He said it is the BEST you can buy and that I do not know how to use my washer. He said their is a clean button on the front for cleaning it and I told him I DO NOT have that button on mine. It is around 3-4 years old. I said maybe they are owning up to the problem and found something to attempt to fix the problem. He said have you checked out Whirlpool and other front loader problems on the internet and I told him NO because I do not care about their problems that I do not own one of those, why would I care. Well as usual NO SATISFACTION. DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER. The lady who stated she LOVES hers is probably one of the newer washers or does not mind STINK.

LIFE IS NOT GOOD WITH LG
by: Andrew B.

This washer makes our clothes stink! (There's a class action lawsuit). Our LG fridge had a recall due to a fire risk, plus a stupid design that dumps ice cubes on the floor when opening the door. Our LG DVD player (DR787T ) never worked right, and has stopped working for good. LIFE IS NOT GOOD WITH LG

LG - Great Washer! Life's Good!
by: Curt

I was surprised to find so many people with issues about this washer! I bought mine from an FSU student who had them in her condo and did not want to move them across country. I installed according to instructions. No vibrations and extremely quiet. Loudest noise is from the water filling. No "smell" issues either. I always leave the door open and wipe the gasket off after each use. This is the only issue I have, but others I know with other brands of front load washers recommended this. Very easy to use and the spin cycle leaves the items almost totally dry. Would buy LG again.

leaking problem from hose
by: Gail

Has anyone experienced this problem? We recently discovered that there is a rubber house that is used in the draining of the wash machine. We have ONLY used the HE powder detergent that was recommended we use when we bought the machince (in 2007).

Unfortunately, we had a leaking problem from this rubber hose that I believe has been happening for a very long time. We did not notice it until the water built up enough to seep out the front of the wash machine. Upon investigation, there are holes eaten in the rubber hose.

Almost like the detergent ate through it. Some holes were bigger then others.... we ruined the floor and base board behind the wash machine because this problem probably existed for quite a while before we discovered it. Now we need to replace the rubber drain hose but I'm anxious wondering if in the next year new holes will be appearing and leakage will be happening again.....

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
by: Anonymous

It has nothing to do with farm water. I have city water, no water softener tablets and have HE detergent from the start. They are looking to blame a HUGE DESIGN PROBLEM on everything but themselves. I am very disappointed in this product. It washes great but STINKS. As far as leaving the door open you should not have to. If you have first floor laundry who wants the door left open and in the way. As far as a hazard for children, pets etc. as well. As far as the soap dispenser, it has black mildew in it as well. The tablets you are suppose to put in the washer to remedy this problem DO NOT WORK EITHER and are expensive.

LG Tromm Sucks
by: Anonymous

Very upset that I spent so much money on this washer that smells like a fish tank!!! Was also told to leave the door open? What??? I have small children and it is very dangerous to do. Luckily my stinky piece of crap is in the garage I feel sorry for those of you that have it indoors because every time I wash a load it smells like a septic tank. DO NO BUY THIS WASHER!!!! I am going back to a top loader so my clothes can get washed correctly they have not been washed right in about a year and they stink!!

Quiet and I appreciate it
by: Anonymous

When my husband and I got married, we knew our larger family (4 kids between us) would make for a busier life, but we soon discovered our small washer couldn't handle the workload, so we decided to get a larger one (with the matching dryer, of course). I did a lot of research on the internet to find the best machines in our budget. Finally, in February, 2006, we went to Home Depot and bought our LGs.

We really got lucky, in that they were having a sale on them at the time, and a rebate on the delivery. Once set up, I was amazed at the load it could handle! I could wait a few days, and still get most of my laundry done in two loads, where before, I was doing two loads a day. Plus, my husband said he could actually smell the difference in his work clothes. They didn't have a lingering odor that the old washer tended to leave in them. I guess they weren't really getting all that clean.

The washer is quieter than my old one, but if you leave anything lying on top of it, it shakes and rattles like crazy from the vibrations. But other than that, there is really nothing bad to report, from my end. It cleans my laundry extremely well, and with the different settings, I can customize my loads (heavy soil for work clothes, normal for school clothes, etc...). I have never had any problems with it (almost 2 1/2 years later).

I love my washer, and can't imagine having another one. I would highly recommend it to everyone.

I have the smell problem also
by: California

Bought the washer December 07. At least a year it has a sulphur smell while washing. Have never been able to figure out.Didn't realize others experiencing. Now it leaks on the bottom. Out of warranty, but we need a service call after only 19 months? This machine cost $1000. Very disappointing. Buy the extended warranty if you buy one of these.

Disappointed
by: Anonymous

Bought this washer in 2007 and now we are getting a TE error and the washer doesn't work at all! It is sitting full of water and we have to wait for a repair guy to come out and fix it. For a washer to be 2 years old and needing service is very disappointing to me. I have used only HE products from day one, I have a slight smell in the washer but faithfully clean it and leave the door open to let it dry out. Loved the washer at the start but now I wish I would have bought another brand because it seems like this product wasn't worth the money!

pitiful product
by: Anonymous

i have this front loader...and the sister dryer.

the washing machine is HORRIBLE. My clothes STINK every load...and i have complained as well. I've been told leave the door open. (does not work)

In addition, the softner, detergent cups constantly have liquid in them after cycle. (yes...i've been advised to use HE - high efficiency detergent...which i've always used)

NOW...i am getting IE or EI (dont remember) and the cycles take 2-3 hours to complete (when they do)

this indicates a lack of water pressure. ummm...BS

Have also been told machine not designed for pump driven water. This is something that should have been disclosed at purchase time.

Product sux. cannot stand it.
