Ten years and going strong NEW
by: Anonymous

Bought the HE2 back in 2005 and it worked well for a long while. In the past I discovered that the wiring connections became bad and would throw a FDL (front door lock) error repeatedly. I think having to remove the top to access the wires is over for now. The machine works flawlessly and cleans well.

Watch amount of soap NEW
by: Anonymous

Just had my washer looked at for leaking water and suds out the back vent. Silly me...I was using the detergent lines on the washer, which is way too much soap! Repair guy said not to use more than 2 tablespoons of the HE detergent. Apparently the water pushes up through the back vent if you use too much.

F-28 comm fault NEW
by: Anonymous

Machine ran well for five years than gave a F-28 fault which is loss of communication between the Central Control Unit and the Motor Control Unit. Paid Sears $100.00 for a service call and the the serviceman said my Motor Control Unit needed replacement at a cost to $560.00. That cost plus the $100.00 service call cost was equal to a new machine. From the internet it seems this is a very common problem with these machines.

You call this a washing machine? NEW
by: Anonymous

Like all the other posters, this machine is hardly worth what the junk yard would pay for it. Here are my problems. 1) sewer sludgy odor and I keep it clean, 2) door seal leaks, 3) can't wash a regular load without an F20 error code, 4) replaced noisy pump, but new one is still very noisy, 5) replaced pressure switch and checked for water inlet obstructions still get f20 unless using a very light load, 6) vibrates terribly no matter what you are washing, 7) big POS

5 years and broke down NEW
by: M Link

My washer is only 5 years old and it quit pumping water out of the machine. Also the code said there was an electrical problem. The Sears maintenance man came and said there was a "dead" spot in the pump so he ordered one and also ordered the electrical panel board.....cost...$450....wow!!! For $200 more I can buy a new machine. Not only that, Sears called this morning ans said they had to postpone my service call til January 6th as they need2 men to lift the machine to repair it!!! It broke down December 22 nd. That is what I call "very poor service".....we have had problems with all our purchases at Sears.....enough is enough don't you think???

Not reliable for long.
by: Anonymous

I bought the Kenmore HE2 Washer/dryer set in 2008. I have had repair service her numerous times. Replaced the pump myself and now it won't run because 2 little black wires are no longer connected to a water temperature sensor. Sears wants a fortune just to come to my house, (2 weeks from now) I have been to the laundry mat 4 times since this happened. I bought it because it was rated so well for cleaning, capacity and energy ratings. These statements are true. It is just very frustrating that something like a water temp sensor can render the washer useless. I wish I would have bought a different machine. This one was reasonable priced and the amount I have put out in repairs and service calls I could have bought another machine. Not happy with Kenmore or Sears service department!

Had this washer serviced over 10 times since I bought it. Spent over $2000 just in repairs. It is a total P. O. S. I learned how to clean it out at the clean out and filler area from the service guys. It never drains properly have to run several cycles to get it to drain and its not plugged up. I am scrapping it to buy a cheap top loader I will never buy a front loader ever again.

He2 Fault Codes
by: Biguggy

F28 Fault Code Means
SERIAL COMMUNICATION ERROR
The communication between the Central Control Unit (CCU) and the Motor Control Unit (MCU) cannot be sent correctly.

Possible corrective actions are; -
1. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
2. Check wire harness connections to the MCU, the motor, and Central Control Unit (CCU).
Check connections of the CCU board within the housing.
Make sure all grounding switches are engaged.
3. Check the drive system for any worn or failed components.
4. Plug in washer or reconnect power.
5. Verify CCU operation by running a Diagnostic Test or any cycle.
6. Check the MCU by looking for operations of the drive motor.
7. Check the drive motor for powered rotations.
8. Check that the serial harness at the MCU is not mounted upside down. The wires should be to the left when facing the MCU connectors.

Do your PM's
by: Dale

If you follow a few rules this machine should work for a long time.
1. HE detergent only.
2. Set up on concrete only.
3. Run the washer clean cycle frequently.
4. Leave the door open when not in use.
5. Clean the pump filter routinely.
The only thing salesman will tell you is well... buy it!
Most of the complaints you read are probably related to the pump filter. Most of the people probably didn't realize there is a pump filter.
To get to the pump filter, first unplug the power! Then remove 3 hex screws at the bottom of the access panel below the door. Be prepared to get wet when you unscrew the filter. Clean out all the change, rings, hair pins, fabric strings and other junk. Then run the clean washer cycle a few times.
Do this every 6 months or have a service tech do it. Otherwise run til failure and spend $350.
In the Navy we call this doing PM's (Preventative Maintenance)

Causes of Spider Corrosio
by: Biguggy

The spiders in these machines are manufactured from aluminium alloys, which are capable of being corroded by almost all laundry aids used, including HE detergent, should the required concentrations be reached. Many posts on many sites claim that the corrosion of the spiders is due to galvanic action. I do not agree, I believe it is primarily chemical corrosion.

Should the corrosion have been galvanic between the stainless steel drum and the aluminium spider the majority of the corrosion would have been at
the junction of the two metals i.e. at the ends of the arms. I have seen no photographs of spiders corroded in such a manner, nor read of any
similar descriptions.

Aluminium, and its alloys are corroded when immersed in an aqueous solution with a pH value above about 8.0 or below about 4.0 (nitric acid
is a well known exception). All detergents have to be above about 8.0 or they would not work. The Material Safety Data Sheets put out by Proctor
and Gamble state that the pH for one of the liquid ‘Tides’ is 8.0 and for one of the ‘Tide’ powdered detergents as 11.0. Bleach, (sodium
hypochlorite) is also very corrosive to aluminium. I should add that for corrosion of the spider to take place these levels are considerably above the levels found in a washing machine during the wash/rinse phases of the cycle.

Sodium carbonate (washing soda) and sodium percarbonate found in some laundry aids (Affresh and Oxi-Clean [powder]) are also corrosive to
aluminium, as is borax, provided the required concentrations are reached.

I believe the mechanics of the corrosion are as follows.
Even after the fastest spin small quantities of water will remain on the shaft and towards the centre of the spider. Any recesses in the spider
close to the centre will aggravate this situation. This water will contain ’contaminants’, unused detergents and other laundry aids used, soil from the laundry, products of the reactions between the laundry aids used and the soil from the laundry, chemicals contained in the tap water used and
the products of any reactions between these chemicals, the soil and the laundry aids used. Should sufficient of these ‘contaminants’ be present the pH of the mixture can, as evaporation takes place, rise to a level where corrosion will take place.

DEFECTIVE DESIGN
by: Ryan Pensy

PLEASE VIEW THE VIDEO ON YOU TUBE TO SEE WHY THIS MACHINE WAS NOT DESIGNED PROPERLY. As you will see the tub assembly has three screws that stick outward from the inside of the tub. As the machine gets older, about 5 years in my case, the spider cage (made out of aluminum) which holds the drum assemble (made out of steel) corrodes and lets the spinning steel drum sag, letting the screws scrape the tub which holds the water. Once these screws scrape through the tub holding the water, you have water leaking everywhere. Stay away from this machine.

1 star is not low enough
by: Anonymous

for the piece of junk washing machine.

It started to leave clothes wet a year or so ago, but would spin them dry if a drain/spin cycle was added on. Then it took two extra drain/spin cycles. Now it will not spin the clothes adequately regardless. I cleaned the pump filter (and found enough coins to buy lunch). That did not help. I ran several empty cycles, and cleaned the washing machine, thinking it might be oversudsing. That did not help. It will spin at high speed with no clothes on any cycle. With clothes, it runs the "suds" routine, and will only spin at low speed on any cycle.

This is the third Kenmore appliance we have had (all of them highly rated by Consumer Reports) that has failed to measure up in recent years. What happened? Kenmore used to be considered the best appliances to buy. I won't buy another of any kind.

Many repairs and flooding
by: Irritated

I purchased this washer in September 2007. I have had 4 service calls due to the pump glogging, or saoks being logged into the drain during drain/spin cycle. It has flooded mutiple times, and caused damage to not only my laundry room floors but the carpet and hall way. The appliance makes loud vibrations and noise as it spin cycles. Cloth stains do not come out well, has flooded from detergent dispencers multiple times. Not to mention the load cycles are extremely long. Not efficient for families with kids. Washer starts to smell funky because it does not ventilate properly. I will never again buy a Kenmoore washer. Now i have learned my lesson and will well research before i soon make my new purchase.

BEWARE SEARS KENMORE HE2 WASHER AND SEARS IN GENERAL
by: Gordy Falconer

This is the most dysfunctional product I have ever owned. This washing machine has been broken over a dozen times over the past 3 years. Sears doesn't stand behind their product at all. I literally have never bought another product in my lifetime that has been so undependable and had such poor product support. I would imagine that the management at Sears probably laughs to themselves every day about the way they have taken advantage of the public with this product just to make a fast buck. Any self respecting retailer with an ounce of integrity would have manned up recalled these lemons. The funniest thing is when you speak to customer support and the tech dept. they act like your the first person to ever call with a problem with one of these washers. Guess what Sears this is 2010, and I have the internet, it takes me 3 seconds to see that I'm only one of hundreds if not thousands of people that you've swindled with this machine. No more Kenmore for me, No more Sears for me, No more Kmart for me. I would recommend the same for anyone who is interested.

I bought my Kenmore HE2 in March '06. A year later the gasket around the door went and had to be replaced - under warranty. That should have been a warning signal that I needed to buy the extended warranty - which regretfully I did not. In '08 the door gasket went again and I paid for the Sears service man and new gasket. In '09 the lights started flashing and it would not drain. I again paid for the service man and turns out the filter was clogged. Now in '10 the gasket around the door cracked again causing water to leak out the door. Again paid for the Sears service man after I bought the gasket ($65) myself thinking I could change it (couldn't).That bill was $180 PLUS my cost of the gasket ($245). NOW I have no noise coming from the machine period. I went downstairs yesterday to find a washing machine full of water with lights flashing. The door did open, water poured out. I tried resetting, putting the dial on drain and spin, unplugging and restarting etc etc. I've decided NOT to spend ANY MORE $$ on this machine. I'm very very very disappointed in this Kenmore product. I have a houseful of Kenmore and unfortunately I won't even consider buying another Kenmore front load washing machine now.

NOTHING BUT A LEMON
by: Allyn

I have owned this washer for 3ys. After the first three months they had to fix it, it was the CCU then they replaced the other control board. It has leaked and the pump has been a problem from day one. The warrenty ran out in feb. Now I have a washer that once again says F28. If they already replaced the CCU then why is it ALREADY bad again. I called sears, of course they are not going to stand behind their lemon they sold me. My whole home is full of sears products but it will be the last. I can't believe I spent over 1700.00 for the pair and just after three years I am stuck with a pile of crap. DO NOT PURCHASE this product, you will regret it as I am now.

This washer is great...when it works. If you have his machine, be prepared for a lot of maintenance bills, or for a lot of time repairing stupid easy repairs. The TCO for this machine is not good...we've had a repair every single year for the 5 years that we've owned the machine of over $150 each year (except 1st year when we had warranty, and machine was perfect). I have to clean the pump on this machine 5-6 times per year...good because I can do it on my own...bad because I have to do it so often. If you have ever owned a top loader, you would never see this as a need!!! Other than these costly repairs and these annoyances, this is a great machine!!!

never buy kenmore again
by: Elaine

I bought this 15 months ago and thought it was great. 2 months after the warranty expired, it began leaking.

My appliance repair man said this model has been SO bad that the part to fix it had been back ordered. So Sears KNEW there was a problem. After he fixed it, for $200, I wrote Sears. They replied that I had purchased an extended warranty (which i did NOT) and they would have repaired it for free. If I had an extended warranty, it was news to me. I NEVER buy those. They were NOT apologetic but said they would send me a $50 gift card for my trouble.

I have a Kenmore freezer that has been 100% perfect for 25 years but I will NEVER buy another Kenmore product and I will give the gift card to someone else. I will NOT support a company that is negligent and deceitful.

the absolute worst machine
by: Tracey

The 1 star is actually higher than this machine deserves but unfortunately there is no option for anything lower. My Kenmore he2 washer is 4 yrs. 2 mos. old and what happens after the 4 year extended warranty expires, the drum made this awful banging noise while I was doing a load of wash. Sears wants $350 (inc. tax) to extend the warranty 1 yr which will pay for a technician and up to $500 for parts. I schedule the appointment, which they couldn't give me any sooner than 1 week later, left work early (I don't get paid if I'm not at work) and sat home for 4 1/2 hrs waiting for the tech when the phone rings and its sears service saying the tech will not be able to make it after all, we will have to reschedule. I cancelled my extended warranty and proceeded to call a local appliance repair man who came immediately to evaluate the problem. It turns out the problem is the aluminum spider assembly (which rotates the stainless steel drum). He enlightened me about metal compatibility - aluminum and stainless steel are not compatible and aluminum is known to rot. Anyway, the machine cost me over $1000 with tax and delivery and set up so I asked my local repair man if he could fix it, he said yes but it would cost $700 - $900 because sears will not sell him the parts, he would have to find an outside vendor who charges much more. Only sears repairmen can order the parts and replace them. I have never used anything but liquid he detergent, there are only 2 people in my house, the machine never had more than maybe a 1/3 drum load of clothing and the piece of garbage is now worthless. I previously owned a Maytag for 23 years, what was I thinking when I bought a kenmore?

We never buy protection plans, but had on this one so thankfully it was just junked out and we can get something different. It's really loud. It seems like if you leave any little thing in your pocket it puts he machine on the blink. If you decide to buy it, get the protection plan - you'll need it.

overall good
by: Anonymous

Pros:
-Much more efficient than my old washer
-Quiet
-Looks great

Cons:
-Kind of low to the ground
-I'd get the stand for easier loading
-Timer is odd - if the load isn't done it just stays at 1 minute remaining on the digital display

I bought this washer from Sears to replace my old washer which was a fairly old Kenmore 40 series washer. Immediately my electric bill dropped by 25%. My wife also couldn’t be happier with the features on this washer – it has a sanitary cycle that will clean some really gross stuff and it has a heavy duty cycle for my dirty work clothes.

Overall it is a very quiet machine and we are happy with the quality of the build. It looks really sharp as well – we like the large viewing window on the door. I’d order the stand for it – you do have to bend down considerably to load the washer – or if you have a good back you may not have to worry about this.

Also the timer has a weird feature – on really full loads it will take a bit longer than usual and on the “time remaining” digital display it will read 1 minute left for up to a half hour. This isn’t a big deal and it doesn’t affect the performance at all – but at first I found myself waiting for a while for the last minute to be up. There I was with the basket in hand – ready to go. It was annoying at first but no problem now really.

Overall it is a great washer – I recommend that you pay for the installation and setup – I tried to do mine and it was extremely heavy to move up a flight of stairs – it took three people and a dolly – but we got it done.

I absolutely love this machine. I was intimidated by it at first because there are lots of settings--it's kind of "gadgety". But once I got over my fear of the high-tech thing, I fell in love. It really does get my clothes cleaner than a standard top load washer.

I actually had stains that had not come out when I had washed them in a standard washer that came out in my new machine!! It uses less detergent (another plus) and the clothes come out slightly dryer than they used to be when I used a top load machine.

The only down side is the price. They are still really expensive comparatively speaking. I think we paid about $650.00 for ours (which was really pricey for us). But it has definitely been worth it.

Also, you can only, and I repeat ONLY, use laundry detergent that is approved for "high energy" machines (the label will say HE).

It simply will not work to just use less of the regular stuff (something to do with the amount of suds).

It took me a little while to get used to using such a small amount of detergent, but I think I've got the hang of it now. I've had the machine for 7 months and I love it!!

Ten out of Ten
by: Alison

I love this washer! I've got four kids and five people total in the household and this washer really helps me keep up with all the laundry.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it is a front load. Because it holds so much laundry, it is very tempting to wash super-huge loads at one time. The washer certainly can handle it, but because of its front-load design, it is very difficult (and can be a little painful on the back) to transfer the loads to the dryer. However, if you are careful not to overload it, the machine is great and it is a huge help when trying to deal with that mountain of laundry I constantly find myself faced with.

Aside from it having a huge capacity, it’s great for the environment because of how much water it saves with every load.

Also, because it takes such large loads and uses such a small amount of water, you also save money on detergent. Not only do you have to do fewer loads in order tog et all of your laundry done, but because it uses less water, you need less detergent for every load.

Overall, I’d give this washer a 10!

Large range of options
by: michelley

My Kenmore HE2 Plus Front Loading Washing Machine is great. I love it. It features the Catalyst Cleaning Action, King Size Capacity, and the Energy Star label.

There is such a large range of options in washing and spinning I have full control over the cleaning of my clothes. I can even turn the cycle signal off (or on) which is great since the washer and dryer sit in a closet just outside the baby’s room.

There are 4 different wash cycle choices as well as a Rinse drain and Spin option. There is an option to just clean the machine (with bleach only); there are further options for a prewash setting and also for a second rinse with your wash cycle choice.

I like the extra rinse cycle with the baby’s clothes especially to make sure there is no detergent left in the fabric. It is amazing how the stains on the clothing of my 13, 3 and 2 year olds just come right out with minimal stain treatment prior to washing.

The wash barrel is huge. I’m amazed at how much I can fit inside and still have the clothes come out so clean. With the various options for the spin cycle you can have it spin so fast you have to peel your clean clothes from the inside of the washer upon completion or more delicate depending on the fabrics you are washing. The heaviest spin cycle rattles the floor and make the beds vibrate a bit and can be a little loud briefly when it goes from insane spin to stop.

Just briefly, though. The other spin and wash cycles are super quiet. Again, quiet is good for me having the machines just outside the baby’s bedroom.

We purchased the optional drawers for underneath the washer (and matching dryer) for storage and to make it more comfortable and convenient putting clothes into and taking them out of the washing machine.

The drawer is great for holding laundry soap and softener, a couple hangers, a net bag for delicates when it isn’t being used or whatever. They are deep and tall.

We have had this washing machine for about 3 years now and couldn’t be happier with it. It does everything we need and more. I would recommend this washer (and dryer) to anyone. When we are ready to replace this one, we will probably look at the same type and manufacturer. We could not be any happier.
