Green diapers

by Megan Preston
(Syracuse, NY)

Since we're on the topic of laundry, a great way to go green is to switch back to cloth diapers. There are a bunch of new styles, no pinning and messes included. This will cause an extra load every few days, but it saves the environment from millions of diapers that are hard to decompose. Do your part and make the switch!

Cloth Diapers are More Comfortable
by: Anonymous

If babies could choose the diapers they would prefer to wear, I feel sure most would choose cloth diapers over paper. Though cloth diapers need changing more quickly after being soiled, they must feel softer and more comfortable against the skin than the combination paper/plastic varieties. The tremendous savings to the landfills alone is reason enough to give cloth diapers a try.

New "diapers" on the market
by: Trist

My son and his wife are expecting their first baby in a few months and they just showed me what they are using for "diapers". I don't remember what they're called - "Green something". Anyway, they're very expensive, but they will pay for themselves very quickly. It's a new item on the market.
The outside of the diaper is an old-fashioned cloth diaper with plastic on the outside, so it doesn't leak, and an "insert" area on the inside for you to put a "pad". So instead of throwing away a whole diaper every time, you're only throwing away the wet pad. They actually look very much like menstral pads, but the point is you're not throwing the whole thing away. You can use and reuse the diaper part for several days, maybe 20 changings before you need to use a clean one - depends on if there's any leakage. Then you just launder the diaper part, which actually is not very messy, because the messy part is on the small insert that you've removed. You can flush the insert or throw it away.
I think it's great - it's like taking the best of both worlds and doing a great service to the environment - diapers are 2nd worse thing, next to plastic water bottles.

Cloth Diapers for Babies, Hooray!
by: Anonymous

Great idea. I will go with cloth diapers because maybe they won't cause babies to have diaper rash. I don't know. I had never used it on my baby. I can save money from buying ointment too. Some people think that they can flush a diaper down the toilet. That what happen at my old appartment. I guess they were in for the term disposable. I think that you can save a lot of money if you buy cloth diapers rather than traditional diapers because you can wash it and use it over and over again. An alternative to buy cloth diapers is to make them at home. When my mom had me and my siters she made our diapers. That should save you money even more.
