GE WCVH6800 front load washer

The WCVH6800 is a front-loading washer that looks good inside and out. Its chrome trim body comes in an array of colors that can look good wherever it will be installed. Unfortunately, it takes more than just the sleek-looking design to finally convince consumers into buying. Performance is also on their minds when choosing any home appliance.

check mark

Product Overview The GE WCVH6800 may be compact in size but can take in heavy loads of laundry with its 4 cu.ft. capacity tub. Whether it's a week or two's load of laundry or the drapes at home, this front loader can provide a deeper clean that doesn't damage the laundry. With just a few toggles and presses of its control panel, users get the satisfaction of washing their laundry the way they want to, while LED displays inform them of the progress of the wash cycle.

Key features

First off, the washer's controls are very easy to understand and operate. A mix of rotary and push button controls enables users to program the cycles required for certain loads, while LED displays and Adaptive Logic gives users a heads up on what's going on WITH each cycle. As a front-loading washing machine, its door opens at the front, making it suitable to be installed in a closet or other small spaces that don't have enough headroom. Despite being a compact machine, a good amount of laundry can be fitted in, with its king-size capacity tub, for just one wash. In the end, consumers get to save more time, effort, and even energy when doing the laundry.

The WCVH6800 gives a deeper clean even before the suds work their way through the fabric. With the HydroHeater™, the temperature of the water used for washing is increased to better get rid of bacteria and stubborn stains. Along with the PerfecTemp™ technology, the temperature of the water used in washing is regulated in order to preserve the quality and color of the fabric.

Cycles

The laundry gets better treatment by picking the right cycle out of 26 available wash cycles for the kind of fabric to be washed. Mix and match washing, rinsing, and even spinning cycles to further suit the types of laundry have been included into the features of this washer. There's no need to experiment with different kinds of combination to get the best clean users had the last time. With the WCVH6800, custom cycles can be saved with just a touch of a button, much like how anyone would save numbers on speed dial. For those who want their laundry to soak up for a few hours to break up stain and dirt particles, the washer's delay start option can be activated.

HydroMotion™ wash action

Though the WCVH6800 gives the laundry
a deep clean, it still takes good care of the fabric with the HydroMotion™ wash action. This wash action gently tumbles the laundry to give a thorough washing without damaging the quality of the fabric. The five wash/rinse temperatures with sanitize options allow consumers to take charge of their laundry, giving them a deeper clean that's hygienic and odor-free. This washer also gives the laundry an effective rinse to further flush out the dirt and the detergent.

After rinsing, the 1100 rpm spin speed effectively gets rid of more water during the spin cycle. This ensures that the time and energy spent during drying is reduced. This washer is also certified by Energy Star, as it helps users save on water and energy usage.

Quiet-By-Design™ feature

Despite the heavy-duty motor in this machine, the WCVH6800 is a washer that doesn't make too much noise. With the Quiet-By-Design™ feature, there won't be rattling noises during use.

Advantages

Stylish, efficient, and affordable -- what more could users want in a washing machine? The WCVH6800 certainly lives up to many user expectations when it comes to features needed to take on a family's laundry load. Since it's Energy Star certified, consumers can also apply for rebates if applicable in their locality.

Disadvantages

Though this washer can be installed in closets or as free-standing, a platform may be necessary to keep it in place. These platforms and other mounting accessories are not included in the washer package and need to be purchased separately. Some consumers reported online that these accessories are pricey or expensive to buy and install.

Final Thought

For consumers who want to take charge of their laundry with just one touch of a button, the WCVH6800 can be their best bet. They just have to make sure that this washer is installed in a place where it would fit so they won't have to purchase the platform and other accessories. All in all, this washer is not only sleek-looking but also reliable.

When I bought this in 2009 it was the one I wanted. It was one of the best out there, according to the research I did. Was fine for a couple of years then started having problems! Had service a few times on it. Last week it took a dump again (different issue) this time. It's only 7 years old! I bought a whirlpool, had it delivered today. God I hope it will be a good one.

Banging noise NEW
by: Anonymous

After about 6 years, I started to get a banging noise during the spin cycle. The spider bracket that attaches to the back of the drum has corroded and one of the three brackets is no longer attached to the drum. The banging is the noise of the drum hitting the part of the spider bracket that is no longer attached (as well as the fact that the drum is no longer balanced).

This is a design defect on the part of GE. The drum is stainless steel and the spider bracket is aluminum. The two metals will react with each other and the aluminum spider bracket will eventually corrode and break. I found pieces of the spider bracket (aluminum) in the pump filter and I can tell one of the brackets is broken by moving the drum around.

The problem is you can't buy a new spider bracket - you have to buy the whole drum. You are better off buying a new washer since the parts plus labor will be about the price of a new washer.

This will be the last GE product for me. I have found numerous websites where other people have the same problem as me.

Love It - 2.5 years so far so good NEW
by: Anonymous

I'm very happy with this model. I've had it since January 2012 and have no complaints. When through with a wash, I pull the detergent drawer out, which allows water to drain out, and then I wipe the inside of the door and leave the door open with a rag tucked into the gasket to keep it dry. It takes 5 seconds and I've never had a mildew smell. I wash a load or two a week - I have one child. Great machine! Installed by home depot.

bought brand new washer it s hell.. the drum knocks on the on the back panel frame, making loud annoying noise, went back to the store and they said it was not levelled ,it was perfectly levelled then they said i put too much cloths, turns up even if i put 3 t-shirts it still bangs.LAST time i used it, it went totally out of control i was outdoor and i rushed inside the house to stop it,due to that something broke in the control board ???? now it dosent wash nor spins...it only balances and drains...i only used the washer once a week coz i live alone therefore no intensive use...GE says it s not normal but still they don't take their responsibility. Piece of crap as well as GE service, everyone is avoiding the problem.SO they can all go to hell along with their washer.

Bad GE Washer
by: Anonymous

It is so sickening to know that GE an American Icon can take credit for such a poorly made product. To look at all of the same comments about how dangerous this machine is moving around and banging against walls hoses and drains. The amount of time you spend stopping and redistributing clothes is ridiculous. This is verified by the repairmen that come out on these same calls and look at the same problems on each repair call.I am calling GE and asking for my money back. I would rather have a quiet Samsung washer that does not match in color and style to my GE dryer and be rid of this nightmare.

This washer and GE belong at the bottom of the Ocean
by: Bruce Ts

This washer is absolutely the worse washer ever made. It makes bangs and dances around on the floor each time we use it. We have had this one washer for two years because the first one was so loudand dangerous that GE had to come out and replace.GE than came out and replaced the washer and we thought we just had a lemon. Now we have a new washer that does the same banging and dancing aound on the floor. We have had to have repair men come back on 6 different repair calls. You have to babysit the washer each time you wash and believe me GE Technicians have reported these problems on each visit. Furthermore you look at the number of complaints on this site and you figure how can so many people have the same problem.

GE WCVH6800J1WW
by: johng

The big problem is the machine will only high spin
1 out of 10 times. Spend much time balancing the load in the drum with jeans or flannel shirts, with
just 2 to 4 items each. Heavier or lighter loads it is even worst. My wife has cursed this machine since we bought it. One week after we purchased it we had a GE repairman say "many women have cursed this and me". But this is the way GE made it. The second problem is the detergent dispensing doesn't work for beans. We have cleaned the trays, porting channel and it still doesn't function. My wife adds the detergent now with the cloths and avoids the dispenser. I'm a design engineer, and toolmaker. I will re-design the balancing of this piece of junk to my specifications. I suggest to GE to run these before marketing them. They've made a bad name for themselves with this washing machine.
P.S. The matching GE dryer works great!

Top Load motor vs Front Load motor
by: JR Bright

I have this model in red and I believe the motor /drain pump is burned up, Took it out and researched the model and found another motor for the top load version of the washer. Can I use a top load motor on a front load machine?I found a motor made by the same company but it's two digits off on the model number?
Model DPO 40-018 but found one thats is DPO 40-001. They are identical with same voltage and watts. Your thoughts?

People, did you know there is a filter on the washer that needs to be cleaned out from time to time? My cloths weren't spinning properly. Had someone come out and look at it. He asked if I had cleaned out the filter!! He cleaned it out and now it works like a charm.

As for the balance issue, you have to balance the machine from time to time as well. You also have to take out the packing screws as well.

Everytime I open the door of my GE front loader, I get on the floor stare into the washer to see if I can tell if it drained. 9 times out of 10 I open the door only to flood my laundry room. This issue has made me hate this washer! It spins, but doesnt completely drain. I know the pump is working because of the 1 time out of 10 that it actually works right.

FIXED MY BANGING
by: Jason Marsh

BIG THANKS! to Danny, who posted some months back. I fixed my banging washer today by removing the 4 shipping bolts from the back of the washer. I got my Washer on a clearance discount because it was a defective return. I also had the banging that all of you mentioned here. I could move the tub back and forth by hand, enough to make it bang inside the machine. After locating and removing the 4 shipping bolts, I have resolved my banging issues. I hope renewing this info helps some of you that are still having the problem. FYI, this info is on page 17 of the owners manual.

Won't balance: Have to babysit washer
by: Anonymous

This washer is always out of balance. I had to replace the water inlet pipe 2 weeks ago and it is broken again with leaking water everywhere!
The inlet pipe is the cheapest plastic I have ever seen. I have been very careful to watch this stupid machine so it won't go out of balance, but I'm seeing this as being a ton of trouble.
How stupid is it to make a machine with such cheap plastic?

If I had it to do again, I would have never bought this machine. It's less than a year old too!

Walking and Banging
by: Frank in N,T,

We have had this front loader for about 1 year and 6 months and all it does is walks and bangs. Had a GE factory service rep in for cloths not sping the water out, said there was nothing wrong with the machine. Called Sevice again for banging and walking, said there was no problems. We have a 5 year service agreement on this machine. I should have invested this money in another major brand as I know other people who have front loaders and they do not have any problems with the unit. Sevice man is n his way in in the next few days again. Don't even think of buying this model.

After 5 repairs calls in 1 yr, GE replaced my front load. After having my 2nd one for 2 years, totally dissatisfied & will be shopping for a new machine - not GE. This machine does not clean clothes, cycles last 30 to 40 minutes longer then stated, machine bangs, sometimes clothes are still soaking wet when cycle finishes. Terrible mildew problem, to much maintenance for a washing machine that has to use water. I will never buy a GE again & this machine has given me a bad taste for front loads. I will go back to the top load.

What a joke
by: Annoyed in PA

I purchased a GE front end loader and washer 4 years ago. The washer was a joke. It was off balance from the beginning. Then it got worse. It wouldn't drain all the water and I would have to drain and spin with every load. Then the banging started. I called a GE repair man, who blamed it on my bathroom rugs. I have been doing my bathroom rugs in my washers for over thirty years!!! Then her gave me a estimate of $1685.20 to reair a $900 washer. RU kidding me. GE SUCKS!!!

Fabric softener problems
by: Anonymous

Our machine "bangs" and has all problems others
have submitted. Our first machine leaked
excessively and was replaced by Lowes. Within
a year, our new one will sporadically not cycle
the fabric softener. All instructions are
followed. Lowes couldn't seem to do anything to
help, so when I threatened to go as high as the
CEO, then the Attourney General if need be, GE
suddenly became involved and "will send me a
complete refund/Lowes Gift card for the price of
the machine so I can replace it. Meantime, I'm
stuck with a like model matching dryer, and OH!
I bought the machine on sale, and paid for the
delivery, so I'm still making up the difference
of the new machine (if we can find one!). No
more GE's or Lowes for us!

Do NOT Buy This Junk!!!!!
by: Greg

Pathetic that a washing machine can not do the wash due to the dangerous out of balance condition when trying to do the wash! The machine moves so violently that it pushes open the hall doors of the closet that it is in. It actually bangs against the walls too.

Looks great, but can't even use it...what a joke of a product. If this were a car it would get a mandated recal, but GE says it is not a problem with the machine, but how we do wash. Horrible response from customer service.

Going to junk it and never buy any GE product again.

Big waste of money!

Towels Take All Day
by: Anonymous

While I like the performance of the washer on most things, we have a family of 6 and a pet and go thru towels like crazy. I can spend up to 4 days doing towels, which does not save me time at all...they just won't spin out, and I feel I should be able to put more than 2 towels into a load....otherwise I am not saving time, energy, or money in the end. Also I cannot even do a small bathroom rug or kitchen rug. They really need to solve this balancing issue. For regular loads the washer does a great job of getting the clothes clean and the stains out... I just wish it could do towels better.

Do not buy this machine
by: Anonymous

Clothing goes in dirty, comes out dirty. If load is "unbalanced" (very difficult to avoid) cycle may last for hours as machine keeps trying to balance it. During this time the rinse and spin cycle goes on and on, actually using much more water than a less expensive top loader.

Unabatable Mold
by: Anonymous

Had this machine about two months when we started to notice the mold buildup in the rubber gasket that seals the door when closed. Tried the self-cleaning cycle as described in the manual that is specifically geared to remove mold, but it didn't accomplish anything. The drainage holes designed into the gasket are easily clogged and don't fully drain the water, which quickly turns moldy. I can't remove the black mold with bleach or any other cleaner.

After a year's operation the mold is so disgusting we hate using the machine, but have no choice since the investment was so high. I would never buy a front loader again. Anyone thinking about buying this, do yourself a favor and do some research on the mold problem. GE, you really need to go back to the drawing board, literally, on this design.

Basics
by: Anonymous

The things Danny mentioned are pretty basic and I can confirm that those 4 bolts have been removed, machine is screwed to the pedestal and leveled using the pedestal feel. machine is solid and leveled.

Will not wash one set of king size flannel sheets without banging on start up of the spin cycle. Same thing for a full load of towels, lightly filled and not over loaded. The machine can't balance the load.

We replaced it with a 12 year old Maytag Neptune front loader that worked perfect and still does for our son who it was handed down to.
I still maintain this is a POS machine. When ever we leave the house we have to make sure its a small load for fear of it going wacko while we are not there.

If GE would offer a fix/upgrade or something I would buy it just to resolve the issue rather than be stuck with the trouble.

Banging issue can be resolved
by: Danny

First, there are 4 large packing bolts in the back of the washer that have to be removed. forgetting to remove any or all will result in severe balance problems. See the install instructions for details.

Second, the washer must be leveled using the adjustable feet.

Third, If you have the matching pedestals, as I do, they must be installed correctly and the washer subsequently leveled using the adjustable feet on the pedestals.

Fourth, be sure not to overload the washer and to distribute the load evenly. I spin the drum once or twice after loading to help with this. If the washer still begins to bang during the spin cycle stop it and re-distribute, or lighten, the load. Or, use a slower spin cycle speed.

My washer works like a champ, stable and quiet at all times even when the spin cycle is set to maximum.
