Front load washer warning

Be sure you've considered thoughtfully the purchase of a front loading washer. We had one and were very dissatisfied with it.

Perhaps we're unique, but we'd always seem to find one additional dirty item that needed washing just after we started the wash cycle. Of course, once the wash cycle begins, the door is locked until the machine completes washing its load, so you can't open the door to add that extra item.

Also, somebody used a powder detergent in ours instead of a liquid, and the machine never seemed to run correctly again. Perhaps it was because the machine we bought was a cheap-o, but it sprung a slow water leak after only a couple of years, and the maintenance person took one look at it and said, "Sorry.

Can't work on that thing." We now have an old upright that runs great, and we're satisfied with it. So what that it uses more water than the front loader?and should be used only on whites.

LG died young
by: Hal

Bought LG frontload Apr 2009 $540. Just had first service call. $400 to fix even with warranted drum. Technician said water softener destroyed aluminum arm inside. We decided to skip repair. Disappointed in LG. 4 years unacceptable duration.

Good for Me
by: Anonymous

I have a Samsung front loader and am quite happy with the performance. I do use the HE (high efficiency) liquid detergent as recommended. I wipe ou the machine and keep a small hand towel in the door to absorb any moisture and prevent moldy smells. I haven't had any problem with that. I have the pause option in the early part of the cycle if I find the need to open the door to add more clothes. My only "complaint" isn't even a real complaint. I'm just getting older and finding it a little harder to kneel down there and get the laundry out then get back up again! Certainly can't blame that on the washer!

how much water?
by: Anonymous

I have a 2 yr old Samsung. I never can see the water in the machine. Yes the clothes are wet but there is NO water visible when you look between the clothes at the bottom when it stops to change direction. What are others experience with visible water levels?

front loaders, a mixed bag
by: deb

Well I have six children and have had 33 years experience with washers. I used cloth diapers back when they were little even. Ok my 2 top loaders, maytag 10 years, whirlpool 7 years, LG front loader 5 years with 3 professional servicings and more by husband to replace the bellows 5 times and now a kenmore front loader. While the LG was down I used a top loader with no agitator for a year that was ok but tangled the sheets into a knot. I don't use the he most of the time, I found setting an extra rinse and downy gave me fluffy towels. Drains clog bad in the front loader so if you have a handy husband, you to can have the 15 year olds (when he was younger) legos removed and the grandchildrens socks out on a regular basis. I never have had the mildew issue but use white vinegar in my dark loads for the stinky smell from bacteria and sweat cause. I wash for my daughters families and still do 15-19 loads per week. I only would have a front loader with a basement concrete floor that you aren't frantic if there is a leak. I have done my share of laundermat washing over the years and the front loader do wash the best and get the clothes the rest in the spinning. The key is to pre wash the really dirty stuff and not overload and try different cycles. I am still saving on water even with pre wash and extra rinses my old top loader maytag used 50 gallons per cycle, this one uses 20 with extra. Hope this helps.

Follow up on Front Loaders vs. Top Loaders
by: Anonymous

My husband had an ancient Front-Loader when we met (20 yrs ago). It was great, filled UP with water, really washed clothes clean & was all metal- nothing like the $1100 Front-Loader I bought in 2006. (Whirlpool Duet- see previous review below). It DID come from an Appliance-only store though I've never heard quality was better at an appliance store, as a reviewer mentioned below, though there may be differences in models carried, or turnover speed in different stores. (The ones with metal parts may even have been older models, because I suspect Appliance stores don't sell things as fast as big discount stores.)
My 2 Top-Loaders that cleaned so well came from Sears- the 1st, a Kenmore which lasted about 15 years, the 2nd a Whirlpool, which has a glowing review from me below, recently developed bearing problems- they recently rusted out after only 2-3 years! It has had to be replaced.
...As for my Front-loading Duet, I mention the problems it had in the review below - leaking from the front seals being the most inconvenient.
As for getting clothes clean in a modern front-loader, I think the Duet didn't use enough water to do it as effectively. If only washing for myself, I probably wouldn't have noticed. Washing for 3 dirty, growing boys-- the Front-Loader couldn't cut it. My old Top-loader(vintage '92) got out most stains- from baby formula to grass. With the Duet, I would often have to wash their things twice.
I am now on my 3rd machine in @ 5 years after having only 1 for the 1st 15! It's a Top-Loader (Kenmore- LG Made)seems to be a hybrid of both FL & TL- has no agitator & uses less water. My opinion of it is that it's about halfway between the 2 options in most categories.
BOTTOM LINE: it's my opinion that American quality peaked in the '80's & '90's. Due to lack of quality control & government hamstringing our products' effectiveness with energy efficiency and environmental controls (regardless of your opinion of necessity) it affects performance.
The front loaders are probably improved and better now, just as H.E. toilets have improved and top-loaders are being forced to act more like front-loaders and won't be as good as they used to be. (My fancy new dishwasher isn't as good as the old one either - but that's another story.)

Buy Quality
by: Anonymous

I did a tremendous amount of internet research and found a many people were dissatisfied with their FL, BUT I REALLY WANTED ONE! I purchased a Bosch and I'm very happy. Here is the key-- Purchase your washer from a reputable appliance store rather than a mega home center. When they manufacture appliances for home centers, they make changes to bring the price down. These changes lower the quality. An appliance store (only sells appliances) get the first and highest quality machines & they'll stand by what they sell. I found this with my dishwasher. It is also a Bosch, but I purchased it from a mega home center. The racks are so cheap it unbelievable. At the appliance store, the dishwasher racks were much more sturdy. I wish I had known what I know now.

So don't be afraid to buy a FL, just buy it from a store that specializes in appliances.

13 years with a front loader
by: Anonymous

I've had my front load washer for 13 years now and I love it. When I purchased it, there was no such thing as HE detergent...I just had to use low sudsing detergents in small amounts. I've never had a mold problem, none of the electrical problems, none of the durability problems common today. The difference? My washer was not made here in USA, nor Mexico, nor Korea. It came from Europe, is all metal (stainless steel inside tub and outside tub...most of them today are stainless inside and plastic outside. Mine also fills deeper than the ones available here now but doesn't use any more water. Americans think "bigger is better" and build the washers so huge they have to work harder to wash those big loads. I like mine, it's a little smaller but I have no problem washing king quilts in it. Before you buy a front loader, do your homework, check out all the review websites and see what everyone else is saying. Look at the quality of the appliance, check out some from Europe (and I don't mean Bosch, they are mostly built here) especially the German and Swedish machines.

Front load washers are THE BEST for me and is definitly better than the top loaders :)
by: Anonymous

I've had a front loader since August of last year and even though it hasn't been one year yet, my new washing machine works so much better! I work as an office person and I always have to dress up. I wash my business clothes in my front loader and they are easily cleaned and the washers are so much more gentle than my old top loader. I liked my old top loader too but it broke down and I decided to get a front loader.

I always hear people say that front loaders aren't worth buying because they always break down, but I decided to give it a try and buy the front loader :) My shirts don't look like they have been beaten up, and my dress pants and socks don't have rips or tears in them no matter how many times I have washed them! My top loader would stretch my socks and my shirts and dress pants come out wrinkled. I hated it and the worst thing was, that it used up so much water & electricity!! My bill was probably around $150!! but now it's less than $100 that's for sure :)

Back to a top Loader after a Front load washer !!!
by: E. Todd

I HATED my front loader. It cost $1100 and did not have a pause feature. I bought it 4 years ago-- maybe the pause feature wasn't as common then. I believe it was a Whirlpool, but I forget since it died last year after only 3 years. It had to be serviced with electrical problems only 1 week after installation, so I guess I was forewarned. It also had mildew problems and eventually leaked through the seal on the front door among other things....I never used anything but liquid HE detergent, either. It didn't hold very much, though the advertisement said you could get umpteen pairs of jeans in it. I would have to fill it only half full to get the clothes only relatively clean. Laundry pileup was a nightmare for me with 3 young boys.
Now I'm back to a Whirlpool top loader I bought last year in early 2008. It had the biggest capacity and it's wonderful. Never a minute of trouble, lots of flexibility in wash settings and temperatures, and now I'm caught up with my laundry with CLEAN clothes.
Front loaders are promoted by the government to save energy, I think. But they don't care how clean our clothes are or whether we ever finish doing the laundry!!! :)

Cursed with Front Loaders Samsung & Kenmore
by: Anonymous

Purchased April 2009 Samsung front loader - loved the sanitize option, WAS happy with the washing on my clothing BUT the machine filled up with way too much water and the door burst open and flooded my upstairs with steaming hot water. Only 5 months young and obviously seriously flawed. This is my 2nd NEW front loader. My first was a Kenmore - very basic, no bells and whistles - after 2yrs the bearings went and spewed grease all over my clothes and the tech came and said "sorryo, it would be cheaper to buy a new washer than to replace the bearings". So this time I went with the top of the line Samsung with all the bells and whistles and now I have drywall damage and again, no washing machine. Front loaders in my opinion are CRAP! Stick with your 25 yr old top loader. Appliances are not built to last any more, apparently not even made to last 5 months!

Not totally happy
by: Anonymous

Just bought an LG front loader and after each use, I need to keep the door open to keep the smell out. I am also having trouble with my whites. They used to shine so brightly and now they don't shine at all. I tried using baking soda, but I'm going to try Borax. Also in the spin cycle for the cotton/towels cycle, the towels come out so flat that the nap of the towel all but disappears. Drying with 4 dryer sheets help, but the towels are never that fluffy again. My friends and family that come to visit always comment on my towels - how soft they are and how great they smell. I wonder what they would say now. By the way, this LG was expensive and in the first month has already had a service call. Oh well...............

Front loader Blues!!!
by: Anonymous

I use Borax with whites, towels and jeans. Great for the whites and great for the washer.
There are anti mold properties in Borax and I NEVER have a mold issue with my washer. By the way its an LG and I love it.
My daughter had a mold issue with hers, I think its a Maytag and she started using Borax in her whites and towels.
She used I cup of vinegar and half a cup of Borax to clean out her washer and got rid of the mold smell and the mold for good. Its been a year now and no more mold.
By the way smelly washer products are Borax.
Dont use bleach, its too hard on the sealers etc.

Mildew
by: Anonymous

I am glad someone else out there has had difficulties with their front load washers, because I thought I was the only one. We never had the problem of ours locking on us, but we have had a horrible problem with mildew. We have used ammonia and bleach and have cleaned and vented it but still we have smelly clothes. There definitely should be a warning on these new machines. Warning: May Cause Mildew.

Not completely true!
by: Anonymous

Front load washers are not allowed to use a powdered detergent, using this can damage the internal motors and cause the machine to not function properly. It is recommended to use HE (High Efficiency) detergent only which will allow you to use less detergent and therefor save you money.

Secondly, on almost all front load machines there is a "Pause" option, this drains the water inside the washer and stops the spinning allowing a user to add extra items to the cycle. The user can then press the "play" or "resume" buttons and the cycle will resume where it left off. The doors on front load machines lock, b/c if someone was to open while a cycle was running water would go everywhere.

Not only will a front load washer save you money by using one-third of the amount of water a top load washer uses it will also spin at a much higher speed which allows for much faster drying time, which saves you money on electricity. Front load washers also save the user money on detergent and is much more gentler on the clothes while cleaning them even more.

Top loading more preferable
by: Anonymous

I agree that front loading washing machines are a lot of trouble. I had two front loading washing machines previous to my present top loading one and I had been dissatisfied with them. They never had a pause button and you did not have freedom or choice on the cycles. Now with my top loading machine I can use it anyway I like and alter the cycles. I put some clothes which just need a rinse even in the middle of the wash or even spin some clothes together with the load. I can put extra clothes at any time during the washing cycle.

I dont have these problems
by: Anonymous

I've had a front loading washer for a little over 3 years now. If you need to add clothes just after you started the machine, you can hit the pause button and the door unlocks. You do have to use "HE High Efficiency " detergent for the machine. That was made clear when I bought the machine.
However, I am not satisfied with the durability of the machine. I have had to have it serviced twice already. The first time they had to replace the motor ( It was still under waranty). More recently I had to replace the pump that drains the water from the machine. ( out of warranty) When the service man took the pump out, he showed me a sock that had gotten caught up in the pump. He told me to wash my "no-show" socks in a bag from now on. Not a very good design for a machine, if a sock can get through to the pump.

I have always heard good things about front loading washers. This is the first time that I have read anything saying what you claim. Thank you for sharing your experiences so that I may take note of it when considering a purchase! I can't agree or disagree yet, but I appreciate the knowledge! Thanks!

For a variety of reasons I've always liked the look of front loading washers, but I guess that's all thats good about them. I use powdered laundry detergent all of the time, so if they don't work right with that I guess I'm better off with a top loader.

Partly true
by: Anonymous

I have had a front loading washing machine for about three years now. I'm not very satisfied with mine either. It does have a pause button, so I can add items after the cycle starts. The problem is that when I pause it and open the door, water drips everywhere. I've never tried using powdered detergent in it, but I have used powdered water softener. So far that hasn't caused any problem. In general, I just don't feel like our clothes get as clean as with the old top-loader I had before though.

Pause Button
by: Anonymous

Thankfully our front loader has a pause button, because I often want to add one more thing once I start the cycle. It is annoying because after pushing the pause button you still have to wait a bit until the machine stops, then unlocks. I wouldn't say I would advise against a front loader for this reason, but something to consider.

How unfortunate...
by: Miya

What with manufacturers and merchandisers promoting the luxuriant features of front-load washers, this review is helpful because it gives us a look at "the other side." In a way, the reference to using liquid detergent only makes me think of high-octane car engines that only run on premium gas. Thanks for the review!
