Freshen clothes up left in washer

by KH
(London KY)

I am always washing clothes and then having to leave the house before they are finished. Then, I come home and they have that icky smell from sitting in the washer for a couple of hours. The best way to freshen them is to put just a capful of lemon juice in the machine and turn it on the rinse cycle. This gives a quick refresher and once dry all you smell is the detergent.

Really good suggestion! I have tried it and it really works. It was a huge problem for me, coz I usually had to leave cloths in washing machine for hours. Thanks!

WET CLOTHES STINK NEW
by: REBECCA

I have worked in a laundry mat for years and this is what I learned about wet stinky clothes. When loads are left behind they are badged up for 3 days until claimed or tossed therefore the smell can be strong..DRY THEM! As is. Then re-wash with what you wish, lemon- oxi- vinagar in addition to your favorite soap, dry add ta-da......

Washing Machine clean
by: Doug

I have found that after a fortnight the washing machine itself smell a bit.I safe all my rinse cycle water into a bucket/sink for the next wash etc.I do my casuals the through to workers. The last rinse cycle is saved for the cleaning process.Bale the water into machine add Half a cup of bleach without cloths or sometimes I use chlorine.Set machine to wash, skip rinse cycle to allow bleach to kill bacteria.Cheers

Can Also Use...
by: Lynda G

A small amount of bleach for whites

Ammonia diluted in water for colors

Vinegar for heavy fabrics like towels

Add to rinse cycle and dry as usual, Don't add fabric softener again.

Ammonia is great if you have a fisherman in the house!

lemon juice
by: Anonymous

This is such a great idea! I will have to try it because this happens to me all the time. I thought the only way to get rid of the smell was to rewash the whole thing.

Yay for Lemon
by: Anonymous

I'm going to second this idea! I used to either re-wash or spray some Febreeze until my sister-in-law suggested using lemon juice. The clothes come out smelling great, and if it's a small enough load with a hint of lemon!
