Whirlpool Duet Front Load Washer WFW9300V

by Daniel and Nikki
(Omaha, Ne, USA)

This Washer is actually the best washer I have ever even used. It blows my parents washer away. The amount of clothes that you can load into the washer is greater on this front loading machine than the top loading machine. This model has started a new trend of washers as it was one of the first.

As it is a front loading washer, they say that it uses less water. I cant actually measure this claim, but I know that the thing doesn't completely fill up like a top loading washer.

The clothes are perfectly clean when finished. The controls are very easy to understand and has many variables to ensure it does what you want it to do. I think that the best thing about this is that you can stack the washer and drier vertically, which saves space in smaller houses.

Lastly, I havent noticed a really drastic reduction in energy costs, but the drier has taken the bill down a bit. This is putting a little money back in our pocket, but most importantly it actually IS using less energy than out previous model.

We both highly recommend this washer and drier. We have had ours for a couple of years now.

Lack customer saisfaction NEW
by: Reg

In May 2016 our door hing broke. The local parts dealer said these hinges were supposed to be available in April 2016 (so i knew it was going to be trouble) We went back to Lowe's were we bought the washer and the employee called Whirlpool customer service. Service told him the hinges will be available in Mid July, now the timing moved from April to July 2016 (notice a pattern?) I am writing this note on August 12 2016. NO PART YET! This speaks very poorly for made in America and Custer Satisfaction. How many families are struggling trying to wash cloths because a newer washer wasn't in the budget yet. Guess it doesn't really matter were the machine is made!?

DISAPPOINTED NEW
by: Anonymous

We purchased the Duet set in 2011. Had a repairman out within 3 months because the washer leaks like mad when in the cleaning cycle. Told me to throw a dish towel in and it would not happen....that did not work. It not only leaks from the door gasket, but pours out the bottom of the machine too. This is from brand new. Had the repairman out again two months later (from 1st visit), machine only 5 months old and I get treated like an idiot....have pictures to show what was happening. I follow the instructions of leaving the door open etc....my laundry room reeks as do our clothes. What a waste of money. I will make sure anything I buy appliance wise is not associated with Whirlpool in any way.

minor issue NEW
by: Anonymous

I came upon this page - seeking info as to why my Whirlpool Duet dryer just quit working?
There are no answers but huge complaints. I have experienced the sewage smell when the wash cycle drains (i thought it was a problem with my water line.) Also I have noticed a few small holes in a few clothing items (i thought i had a bug or moth problem in my closet).
Early on, I began leaving the door wide open after a cycle, and so I never experience the stinking smell on my clothes.
I have actually been quite satisfied with my set, now 10 + years old.
Just saying. And as mentioned earlier - absolutely leave the door open on any washer.

At least with the top load the bleach is mixed with a lot of water. I am headed to lowe's and buy L G. washer / dryer.

Sewage Recycler NEW
by: Anonymous

Thank God! I'm not crazy after all. I've been telling my husband for years that our clothes reek. They smell musty and no amount of bleach/vinegar/baking soda eliminates the odor. I was personally convinced that this was in fact due to our front load washer, but he reassured me that front loaders are much more efficient and effective than top loaders. I remain unconvinced that dealing with this moldy smell is normal or to be expected. It is disgusting. And i have to agree with another reviewer who mentioned they were constantly reminded of this disgusting smell when they hopped out of the shower and right into a musty, mildewy, "freshly cleaned" towel

I am actually greatful that after 6 years of dealing with this horrible, stinky, moldy, high maintenence machine, that it decided to start gushing water out from underneath the machine. I was trying to look up away to trouble shoot online and fix myself, and stumbled upon all these terrible reviews. My sanity has been returned. And quite frankly, now that i understand the underlying issues of these awful odors, i do not intend to try and repair this leak. I will not waste any more of my time or put one cent into repairing this piece of junk. Alleluyah, i am thankful to now have leverage to justify my throwing it out. Disgusting piece of dirty junk. Ironic that its called a washing machine. How about a "sewage recycler"? Ugghh. I'm actually looking forward to going to the laundromat until i find a good Top Loader (not by whirlpool)! I can't wait to have fresh-laundered smelling clothes...the way it always used to be before we bought this piece of junk. I just hope the moldy smell eventually leaves our clothes and towels!

Whirlpool Duet is junk NEW
by: Anonymous

We bought our Duet washer/dryer approximately six years ago. We have the same problesm as everybody else. Clothes stink coming out of the machines. Laundry room sometimes reeks when the washer is running. Light-colored clothes come out of the dryer with random brown streaks that will never come out. The worst problem was the dryer's circuit board fried while the dryer was running after we went to bed. In the morning the dryer was still running and that end of the house smelled like smoke. When the repair technician took it apart, you could see that the board had actually started on fire. Had to replace the board twice, as the replacement parts as as junky as the original machines. I will never, EVER, buy another Whirlpool appliance.

Whirlpool Duet Sport is the worst!
by: Kevin

We had had the Duet Sport Washer for about 6 years. It has always leaked. We thought the water was coming from the clothes being taken out. NO It was coming from the bottom of the washer Replaced the bellow still leaking.
Also my wife kept complaining about the smell of the clothes. After reading these comments, I believe it is the washer.
Lastly, the washer starting making terrible noise. Took off the bottom panel and heard the noise coming from the pump. On line it said that it could be the impeller. Ordered another and the sound quit!
Took apart the impeller and the impeller had a black piece of plastic (which came off the impeller itselt) wedged into it. This caused it not to rotate correctly making the noise.
So I had an extra $175 into it (did the work myself) and it still leaks. I will never buy a Whirlpool product again! On that note, never a GE appliance either! (Don't get me started on GE)

I actually love our Duet Sport 9200
by: Anonymous

We bought out washer/dryer set in March of 2009. We haven't had one problem with them the entire time until our basement flooded and the washer wouldn't turn on anymore. Turns out the water fried the motor control unit ($250) and after replacing that, it works like a champ. However, it now makes a grinding sound and when going into high speed sounds like a jet taking off. After drying out inside, the dryer never gave us a problem at all. Ours has never produced a bad smell, but that's because my wife found online right after we bought them that keeping the door open between loads and pulling out the soap drawer keeps it ventilated. We never have a bad smell, no leaks, and our clothes have never been torn. Very happy with the pair and will continue to be so once we get the sound fixed.

Whirlpool Duet constantly causing holes in my clothing, especially t-shirts.
by: Anonymous

Whirlpool should sell this top loading machine with a WARNING- ie. Use of WHIRLPOOL FRONT Loading Washing Machine Causes Holes In Clothing.. Wash at your own risk.

Today,(June 18/2013) a Sears repair man, came to check my machine, and told me I was not doing laundry properly. I told him I have done my laundry the same way for years and could not keep the machine spin cycle set at low spin due to clothing ending up very wet at end of cycle.
He proceeded to tell me I was NOT Listening To him! The man obviously has not read the consumer complaints as said he had only heard of this problem with one other customer, and he had worked as a repair man x 30 yrs.
I asked for another service call next wk with another technician. I will NEVER buy Whirlpool again!!!

Do NOT buy Whirlpool/Maytag anything
by: Anonymous

Nasty smell on my clothes from my Whirlpool Duet Washer just started right on time at 1.5 years according to all the other posts. I guess I will check youtube on how to dismantle and clean this POS. I built a new home in 2011, spent 4K on all new whirlpool and Maytag appliances. In addition to the stink of my clothes from the washer, I have had my maytag dishwasher serviced 3 times under warranty (1 was out of warranty but I wouldnt let it go so they finally took care of it, I think it was electrical board). The food chopper doesn't work so I have to tear the machine apart once every 3 months to clean it out. The freezer drain on the bottom of my Whirlpool fridge clogged causing the thawed water to freeze on the bottom which later thawed and drained all over our new wood floors which have warped some because of this. I guess on the plus side, Whirlpool/Maytag -same company- has made me a self taught handyman which turns my wife on...so there's that...

Cheap product design at the consumers expense
by: Anonymous

The door on our Front Loader hinge screws loosened - you had to lift the door to close it. When I tried to tighten them - stipped. Found the #8 screws were less than 1/2 inch long. went to hardware store - bought next size up - they tighted snug. The dispenser door hinge - hinge holder - snapped. Will fabricate a field fix!

This is an example of product engineering on the cheap. Some of us have worked in the field when you never went on the cheap designing parts that were load bearing.

Question - can anyone refer me to a manufacurer that makes a quality stack washer. I found only two - the GE model has a history of control board failures- not cheap $250.00 plus

Constant problems
by: Anonymous

We have had ours 3-4years and have constant issues concerning draining and leaking. YouTube has certainly saved us a fortune but even with my husband cleaning the drain filter regularly(don't even replace the panel anymore) we have issues. The seal has twisted off, luckily it didn't break anything and I was able to put it back on. The seal is quite warped and I regularly pull it up in an attempt to stop the door from leaking. Today I walked into a lake in my laundry room and there is water behind the plastic on the outside of the door. We aren't having any smell issues since I started making our laundry soap. It had the 5d error quite often using tiny amounts of he detergents I have not had any mold issues and I don't always keep the door open, maybe next year? So far no bleach issues or dryer issues...knock on wood. We will never buy another whirlpool washer. As for the lie at the top of this page; if those people. were for real they would have bought their's most likely where I got mine and I highly doubt they got the ONLY good machine in the shipment.

If I knew my life would have been made so complicated by a washer and dryer I would have bought a old fashioned hand washer and told my wife that I would do the laundry myself !

I guess I have to say the Whirlpool Duet washer has been a complete waste of money. I did purchase the extended warranty, only to have a service person come out five times in two years for the same issues, and not correct a thing. I am now out of warranty and my water hasn't worked properly since the day it was purchased. No more Whirlpool or Maytag for me. F20, F21 codes and constant "rotten egg" smell. Customer service is terrible. I would advise strongly not purchasing this washer.

Bleach Spots
by: MadameLily

The latest problem with my washer is the bleach spots. If you use bleach to do a load of whites, you must rinse out the dispenser afterwards else you may find that your navy tee shirt or black jeans are ruined. Other problems: sopping wet clothes after the spin cycle, bad smell if the door is not left open, hole in the rubber seal when the machine was only 3 months old.... BAD Machine. Did I read that there's a class action suit in someone's post? I'd like the details on that. These are crappy machines, the manufacturer knows it, and they continue to make them with the same design flaws. I will NEVER buy another Whirlpool appliance - nor will ANYONE I know. I am a real estate agent and work with a lot of contractors, so believe me when I tell you I will cost the company a lot of business.

Whirlpool-Maytag can we say fleecing America.
by: Indiana

2 1/2 years ago a purchased a Maytag Steam Duet set. I was on cloud nine, because I had waited so long to purchase just the perfect set for my family. I had been saving and saving. Everything started fine. I did experience stinky towels. I did not smell an odor from the washer so it did not dawn on me it might be the washer. However, the largest problem came about at approximately 2 years. After several months of an intense noise I had plastic shavings in the drum and A&E Service repair came out and said my bearings were out and proceeded to tell me that it was out of warranty and it was a two man job that required the drum to be replaced and would cost between $800 - $1,000. I felt this was my fault for not purchasing the extended warranty. So rather than pay a repair bill of this size I purchased a comparable Whirlpool front load because 1) it fit on my 'special' expensive pedestal and 2) it was the only washer I could find on the Maytag/Whirlpool line that had a 10 year warranty on the motor I backed up my plan by purchasing a 5 year extended warranty. Smart? Not. I have had my new washer since 8/2011 and A&E was out last Monday and the bearings are out and the drum has to be replaced to replace the bearings. I really didn't think it would be an issue to purchase from the company again, but A&E was to have the parts shipped and fix it tomorrow (1 week) they called today to ask if the parts arrived. Then then when my husband said no, the really smart lady says well my screen tells be they will not be there until 2/20 (17 days from now). This is after I spent $30 at the laundry today, which will be weekly. After reviewing this site I realize how uninformed I was and what kind of ride I am in store for. I have put and on-line complaint on the Federal Trade Commission website and would recommend that to all that follow. I am looking for other information on-line currently from anyone that has had success that I could join or follow suite. I feel I still have some protection with my warranties, but I do not feel that I should have to put up with this type of service purchasing two high end washers in a 2 1/2 year period of time. The bearings/tubs replacement is such an expensive and large job that the only respectable solution from the factory should be a completely new machine or full money replacement.

by: Anonymous

I have had my Whirlpool front loader since 2006. It was very expensive, but we thought we were buying the best! We were sadly mistaken. It has been the worst washing machine we have ever purchased! There is not enough water to even cover the clothes, much less get them clean. When I called and had their service repairman come out… he said that I had purchased an energy efficient machine and there was no way I could get more water in the machine. (Our daughter also has an energy efficient front loader but a different brand… her clothes have enough water to get the job done.) I have noticed that over time our towels do not come clean as they did with our old top loading washing machine.
You also have to be very careful about keeping the door open and clean the machine regularly and even then I have noticed an odor at times. The machine on the spin cycle shakes the whole house and sounds like a jet plane taking off. All in all I have not been happy with this machine and would never recommend it to anyone. I will never buy another Whirlpool again… very disappointing!

Our old top-load washer had the door wide open most of the time. With this front loader, having the door wide open is not as easy, but we do it, and open the drawer to dry as well.

It's the best purchase we've made. Quite, extra dry clothes, very clean clothes.

Sorry for those with odor problems. Not ours.

I have been defending myself for some time without a solid reason as to why it was happening. I get it now, its not me (it was never me)its this machine!!!!
I just had a code kick out, was ready to replace it the part and thought before I do maybe I should consider a new model... well am shocked by what an overwhelming number of consumers are writing, and validating my experiences regarding the "cheese".

Whirlpool Duet Washer smells like rotten eggs or raw sewage during rinse cycle
by: orfeo

There are two (2) separate "Bad Smell" issues with this machine from two (2) separate causes:

1) The moldy smell that comes from inside the drum and makes the clothes smell bad. Leaving the door open helps a little with this, but it still is just terrible. This is the problem that everybody knows about.

2) The rotten-egg/raw-sewage smell that only comes during the rinse cycle. This is a separate problem that very few people know about, and most assume it is related to the moldy smell problem. . . IT IS NOT! This one will stink up the house, and can be maddeningly frustrating to figure out. First I thought it was coming from the septic vent or drain, since it smells exactly like a septic-tank or a cesspool. I spent alot of money on pumping out and then treating my septic tank, having the waste lines and vents all checked in my house, installing a sealing diaphram on the floor drain, etc., etc., etc. . . It never occurred to me that this smell could be caused by the washing machine itself! Well, to make a VERY long story short, there is a drain pump and associated apparatus in the bottom of the machine that gets clogged up with socks, washcloths, girls underwear, etc., (anything small). Eventually it will cause the machine not to be able to fully drain, and will then start to give an error code, but LONG before that, it begins to make the "sewage smell" when running but especially during the rinse cycle. We had the pump disassembled, and the clogs removed which got the machine working, error code stopped, and draining again. When the clogs were removed and put into a trash can, THERE was the smell. I had to run it out of the house ASAP! We thought that would finally be the end of it, but NO! There must be more clogs or trapped "sewage" water in the rest of the apparatus connected to the drain pump, because it STILL makes the same rotten smell almost every time we use the machine.

I will not buy Whirlpool again.
by: Trisha

I bought my Whirlpool duet washer and dryer 3 years ago. I only had a one year warranty, and after the warranty was up it started making this horrible grinding/groaning sound when it was running. Then I noticed our tile floor was cracking so I took the bottom off and there was water everywhere under the washer. It continued working fine despite the first two issues but then it started giving an F25 code halfway through every wash, and wouldn't finish the wash. The dryer display panel also lights up a different setting than you choose and runs that setting. I can't get it on the casual setting that I usually use. I went out and bought a new top load in a different brand, Maytag. Unfortunately, I found out Whirlpool bought out Maytag. Good thing I got an extended warranty. I've had enough of this brand. My refrigerator and stove are also whirlpool and also broke during the first few years costing a lot of money to fix.

For those of you who said to read the directions to those with the smell in their washers, they very well could have had followed the directions and still got the smell. When I was shopping for a new washer I noticed that the new front loaders have holes in the seal to drain the water out so it doesn't sit. I asked the salesman about this and he told me that they changed the design because they had too many problems with smelly washers....Seems strange to me that they will change the design to stop the problem, yet won't admit to their customers that it was a problem in the first place. Seems sneaky to me.

Broken door hinge, leaking gasket
by: Anonymous

Ours lasted one full year before the gasket broke and water poured out out the wood kitchen floor which --had to be replaced. Next, the washer door will only open 8 inches. We have to put clothes in one at a time . There is a big crack in the metal door hinge, so if we force the door open more that the 8 inches the door is sure to fall off the machine. Meanwhile, our old top loader , purchased December of 1989 has not had ONE problem 1989 to present. So , when Lowes gave us a Free unit CHristmas 2009 (buy one get one free) they lied. WE ARE LITERALLY PAYING FOR THE SUPPOSEDLY FREE UNIT ----JUST OVER TIME----THROUGH MULTIPLE REPAIRS. IF you count the cost of a new kitchen floor, I'd say Whirlpool owes us !!!!

I have one of these junk machines and did good for the first 5 years and had to replace the basket and the outer tub which is a huge job.
Whirlpool was going to walk away and not even give me the parts ,which cost about 600 to 700 dollars. I started screaming and finally they sent me parts. they would not pay for labor and set me up with A$E service to fix it. They suck too and their service was absolutly horrible. I would not buy another whirlpool product again and will never never use A&E service ever again.
Both companies are the worst i have ever delt with.
Fixed the washer myself and if it breaks again it is going to the junk yard.

My mom bought a whirlpool duet sport and dryer and has had it for a little over a year and a half and it leaks water everywhere. It's not the seal in the door either it is coming from the bottom WTH!! It is going to cost to much to fix so we go to the laundry mat but who has that kind of time and money! This product is a waste of time and money, there are other ways to be green and save money (spend a little extra on a better front loader by another brand or just get the trusty top loader)we plan on going back to a top loader. Whirlpool should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this product to still be on the market and for not recalling it.

Service man put new seal in September of 2010. It is now January 2011 and the front door is again leaking. Got 5 months use. Isn't that just great! It was bought at Lowes in Ashtabula, Ohio. Lowes said that they can't do anything about it but to call the 800 number. Again, isn't that just great!!! Ever since Lowes has been in Ashtabula I have been shopping there, but as of last week I have been a Home Depot shopper. I have spent over $150.00 in that week. This spring I will be adding a third bay on my garage. Home Depot her I come!!! Both [Whirlpool & Lowes] are a perfect pair. JUNK.

BAD Machine
by: LILY

Two BAD problems: intermittant leakage and wet clothes. The leakage, when it happens, is huge. There is a LOT of water leaking from the bottom of the machine (which is almost new). The other problem is that the clothing is soaking wet sometimes when the machine is done. These are not acceptable problems for a machine that costs almost $1000. Online forums show that these problems have been noted by consumers since 2007. In three years Whirlpool couldn't fix this? I will never buy a Whirlpool product again.

The front seal leaks constantly.
It vibrates out of control no matter how much care I put into balancing it with a carpenter's level.
Now my son just called me and said there is water all over the floor and the seal has come loose.
After two and half years I am taking this piece of crap to the dump and buying a top loader from another manufacturer

It stinks!
by: Anonymous

I bought the Duet Sport Washer and Dryer in March 2008. I followed the recommendation of leaving the washer door open even though it's inconvenient as my washer is in a closet. Within a few months I started noticing the mildew smell. I did the regular clean cycle with bleach and it lessens it a little. I always leave the door open, wipe down the seal after every wash, I use it every day and run the clean cycle every month and it is now at the point that I am washing our clothes in skunky, disgusting water. The smell is so bad when you walk by when it is running that I thought maybe there was something wrong with the plumbing and it was a backed up drain, but no.

After an expensive service call (and an assurance from Whirlpool that I am the first to ever call about this problem)I was told it is draining perfectly and all front loaders smell. Hmmm. It would have been nice if this warning was added to their marketing material. The service technician recommended purchasing Afresh and running 3 consectutive cleaning cycles with it. I tried it. It seemed mildly better but within a couple of weeks it was back to it's stinky self.

A separate service technician suggested I run the clean cycle 6 consecutive times (seems to go against the whole water conservation thing but I was desperate)- 3 times with bleach followed by 3 times with Afresh. Did that last week and still my towels smell like a mildewy basement. Funny - I thought I was buying a washer to clean my clothes but I've ended up not only flushing my money down the toilet but my "clean" laundry might as well have been washed in the toilet too. Clothes actually smell better the more you wear them and "air" them out. Ironic.

As for the apparent huge fans of the Whirlpool Duet Washer dryer, perhaps their last name is Whirlpool or they are the design genius behind this huge screw-up or perhaps they allow patients in insane asylums access to the internet...

Whirlpool and companies selling this toilet of a washer, get your act together and make this right!!!

I have always loved our Whirlpool products and so I bought the Duet set without hesitation. I am extremely disappointed that my trust has been betrayed by this company. We have had our set for about 4 years. I first noted the "stinky" clothes within 6 months. My kids would complain about the towels smelling...I thought it was something I was doing or not doing...so loaded less, tried different detergent, did the bleach cleaning cycles, even got a water purifying system in the house to no avail. For the past year or two we have been getting the brown streaks on the clothes....it has ruined a number of our clothes...and that is why I decided to look online today! Also, our washer does not always spin/drain well....which is why I thought the dryer wasn't getting things dry as well, but now I am thinking the dryer stinks too! I will sign on for this lawsuit...and I am not a litigious person! I really hope that whirlpool makes this good..or else they will have ruined their reputation with me for life!

The machine is supposed to have a bleach/cleaning cycle run through it every month or so as well as leaving the door ajar. Running the cleaning cycle is one of the first things the installers talked to us about as well as leaving the door open.

The Worst
by: Pamela

Not only do I have all of the problems mentioned here (mold, bleach not emptying, spots on clothes, not cleaning - washing loads twice etc, etc etc) I have a problem draining. Sometimes the clothes are still soaking wet and I have to drain/spin again. Sometimes I go to do a load and about a gallon of water is in the drum. For those of you saying to leave the door open, WHAT A LIABILITY!!! I have a 10 months old. What would happen if she wondered into the laundry room and climbed into my "opened" washer and drowned??? This is a huge problem that I have seen on other sites too. This washer is going. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

bleach spots
by: Anonymous

This washmachine is very very disappointing. yes you can add more clothes to it but they don't come out clean. Children's little socks tend to get trapped in the bottom where the seal and door are, and leaves water in the machine only to find slime. I had a sears kenmore for fifteen yrs. NEVER had this problem. I cannot use bleach to sanitize anything but whites because the machine dispenses the bleach on the clothes because there is not enough water in the machine to mix it. I could get an old barrel put a gallon of water in it and roll it with my hands and it would work just as well getting my clothes clean.

I will never forgive myself for talking my sister into buying one she has the same problem. People beware if you are thinking of buying one. There are more bad comments about this machine than there are good. This washing machine is not worth the price of a good old scrub board.

My Wife's Choice. My Regret
by: Cam B

My wife said we needed a new washer/dryer when we moved in. Front loaders were the rage so we shopped around. Reviews on line and in Consumer Reports seemed positive for this so we bought it even though it was in the upper level of our price range. Broke the handle the second day when it hooked on my pant leg. Have had leaks since day one on the front and all the Whirlpool people say is it's probably the door seal. Well, from what I've read since, it's obviously a crappy design and really should be recalled. Good thing we have this in the basement on a concrete floor, because we've already thrown out 3 rugs that were in front of them due to recurring mold issues. My wife has got the habit of using a vinegar and baking soda combo to clean the seal to keep the smell down. Unfortunately, I get the brunt of the complaints as if it is my fault we bought this piece of junk.

What a waste of money. Whirlpool Duet Front Load Washer doesn't get hot enough to really disinefect clothing, the handle broke right away, the clothes don't get all the way clean and now it's leaking out the front onto the floor.

I've had it 2 years. I feel so bad that I spent our hard earned money on this peice of crap.

The door pops open during the cycle and stops running. Right now we have the door wedged shut with a curtain rod to keep it from stopping during the cycle.

Total WASTE of MONEY!!
by: Anonymous

I have had my set 4 years this October. It has smelled like mold since very early on. Mold on the door gasket, and just today I had to order my THIRD door handle. Why couldn't they make the handle on the washer like the one on the dryer??

What a piece of junk. When we sell our house, these are headed to the dump. So much for "going green". I think I'd my clothes cleaner by taking them out back and beating them on a rock in the stream. All my clothes are dingy.

Whirlpool needs to get a clue and listen to what people are saying about their trashy products and do something about it!!!

I got in on the Class Action law suit!!

Bleach on clothes
by: Anonymous

My washer has ruined two loads of colored clothes in the last month. With as much as these washers hold they were very costly to replace. I don't have the smell but I do have the problem with the bleach. I have cracked the door on my washer since day 1 of purchase. I am very dissatisfied with this washer. I spent too much money on the unit and don't have the money to replace it. I am going to have to using a color-safe bleach full time to insure that I do not ruin any more of our clothes and uniforms for work and school. While I love the amount of clothes it washes, my husband says no more front load washers for our household.

Not Worth the Buy
by: Laura H

I have to admit, I too was excited to get a front load washer. What else can a person want -- save water, bigger loads.....
Well let me tell you, this was the worst purhase I have made. Not only does it have an odor (which penetrates my clothes), it does not clean well. I have spent more money on pre-treatment cleaners since I have had this washer than I spent in a life time. It does not even get my son's tidy whites clean. I had it serviced and was told that the machine is operating perfectly.

Duet washer and dryer are a disappointment
by: Pabrocb

I've had my set for five years, and they are in a busy Cape Cod house we use six months of the year.

I do not have a mold smell, but have always cracked the door after use and have the black and blue marks to prove it. The washer/dryer are in a pantry-hallway off the kitchen

I am so frustrated that bleach use is a disaster. I've ruined so many clothes. I don't think the bleach properly mixes with water and then streaks the clothing. And thank you to the poster who thinks we are all idiots, I do know what I'm doing.

I use "he" unscented laundry detergent and a very small amount. I do notice that the bleach dispenser does not fully drain and will open that up.

I am also "happy" to learn that other people have had trouble with the dryer. We had the vent rerouted last year at considerable expense. I know there is no vent clog and yet I run a load for at least 99 minutes to get it to dry.

I'll go back to a Maytag top loader or Bosch front loader when this thing breaks. I won't have it repaired.

Mold grows on the seal. don't tell me to leave door open (I do that) or bleach(tried it, two cycles later, my clothes had bleach spots, didn't remove the mold either) or clean the seal, (always do that, still smells) What a waste of money this was.

Never again
by: Extremely disappointed

First, I'm convinced that whoever is writing to defend this washer has to be an employee of Whirlpool or a very clueless person.

This washer has been nothing but problems. It does smell and get moldy if you don't leave the door open -- never had to do this with a top loading machine and shouldn't be designed this way. Simply not convenient or logical if your washer is placed in a hallway or area with foot traffic.

It also catches socks and small items between the gray rubber gasket and the door regularly -- another design flaw.

It just doesn't clean clothes all that well. I was so excited to get a front loading washer, thinking it would do a better and more energy efficient job. Hard to believe all that money was spent on a much inferior product to my old Maytag top loader.

My biggest complaint is the lack of drainage from the bleach dispenser. You can use bleach in one wash and it gets trapped in the dispenser. It will appear again when you do another load and ruin all your clothes. We've had numerous loads ruined -- after trying many different detergents and trying other bleaches. When I contacted Whirlpool they admitted my machine may have a design flaw, but would do nothing about it and would not acknowledge that it is a widespread problem. Incredibly poor customer service. Would never purchase one of their products again.

Fatal Design Flaw
by: Rob Y

We bought our Duet washer/dryer in Feb. 2004. We were probably luckier than most; the mold did not appear until early 2009. I thought the machine wa leaking, but a thorough investigation proved that it wasn't. Then the towels started smelling. WTF? Some batches of clothing were so bad I couldn't wear them. A google search confirmed that many other folks were having the same problem.

I don't see how a company like Whirlpool can design, manufacture and market an expensive product that makes your laundry dirtier. It s not a clothes washer, it is a clothes trasher!

I abhor class action suits, but I signed on for this one. Whirlpool has distributed an egregious product. They can't just lay low and hope the problem will go away. I cuss them each time I jump out of the shower and dry off with a moldy towel.

Marks on Clothes
by: Jenny

Just had a repair man out to check into the marks on our clothes. He said he has seen this problem before and it's coming from the dryer. The seal on the drum is broken and the 4 rollers are catching the clothes between the gap in the drum. Luckily, we have an extended warranty and they are going to either replace the parts or give us a new washer. But, I've got 2 other neighbors with the same problem and their dryers are already out of warranty. This seems like a defect to me, but I can't find anything substantial on the internet. Hope this helps.

Can you let us know how to get in on your litigation process. Since the place I purchased my set from will not even give me the time of day.

Maybe if all of us that are not getting any satisfaction from Whirlpool or the dealerships (stores) that we purchased them from, this is the only way to get some sort of response.

You think Whirlpool would admit the problems and replace or at least recall the units that are DEFECTIVE.

But I guess there must be SOOOOOOOOOOO many owners that just love the product and will not admit there
is a problem when they have them.

So - it will be interesting to see what comes of all of this.

The last thing I want to do is sue - but if thats what it takes to get the issues resolved - so be it.

Whirlpool Duet Washer
by: Mel

I got my washer for Christmas last year. This is the 5th time it has broke down with an error code. It has always smelled like sewer during the rinse cycle and I have been very faitful about leaving the door open and soap dispenser open. We removed the bottom panel on the washer and removed a cap to find water standing and smelling aweful. This is not right for a washer that is under 1 year old to break down this many times and smell like it does. I have been fighting with Whirlpool and they finally agreed to replace it. Now the washer they want to replace it with is on backorder. My part to my old washer is also on backorder. I am joining the class action lawsuit as this is aweful. Not counting the money I am spending at laundry mat.

I also called the place I purchased the set from and I assure you I will never buy anything from them again. They do not stand behind the product. They want to refer you to the maker? My goodness - it is tough being a consumer these days. All that dealerships want is the sale and your money, after that they could care less.

They just make appliances that are of poor quality these days -

doesn't work as advertised
by: Anonymous

Mold: We all know about leaving the door open, but if I leave an evening load till morning the whole lot needs to be rewashed due to rot.
Capacity: Small loose loads are the only kind that come clean. Large loads as advertised come out dirty.
Clean: Wasteful top loaders carry the dirt away with the rinse water. This one just keeps rolling your clothes in the dirt.
Dryer: Got an over priced one to match. Should have kept the original. It was 15 years old and didn't have any problems. The new one has had reoccouring loose wire problems. The benefit of the dryer being broken is that I found in the summer I can dry faster (consequently wash more) when I line dry. With the clothes line I can wash and dry up to 12 loads a day (long wash cycle). The dryer can't even come close.

Dear Anonymous,

WTF! Why would you buy a front loader that needs to have the door kept open anyway! A) it is a safety hazard B) Disfunctional to have to keep a door open, especially if you have these machines in an area that may have high traffic like right off of the garage.
BTW, get a life! Why would you get so bent out of shape from these postings. People are only looking for suggestions on how to fix an ongoing problem that stems from front loaders!
Unless you have a gripe or some good advice, giddy up! Go about your business and stop acting like an idiot! Do you work for the company or something that would bring you to such an emotional outpour with no evident regard?

I have also posted a review about my Whirlpool Duet Dryer as well which works in synch with this washing machine. This is the best washing machine I have ever had. I have a family of 5 including a baby and this washer has been able to keep up with the massive amount of laundry that I do on a weekly basis.

There are several cycles that can be used on this washer but my favorite is the whites cycle. With a little bleach and detergent, my whites come out amazing. This has never happened with any other washing machines I have had. I use HE detergent which actually saves me money because I use so little of it. Not much is needed with this washer and my clothes come out great.

This washing machine is very quiet, I have it located near my kitchen where we have a TV and it does not interfere. I used to be able to hear my old washing machine over my TV making it impossible to watch anything!

I am able to wash comforter, sheets, towels without any difficulty and they come out clean. It's hard to find a washer that works well and can hold a queen size comforter without any trouble.

Needless to say, I am very happy with my washer and dryer by Whirlpool. I would highly recommend both to anyone searching for new ones!

Great settings on this machine: Sanitary, Whitest Whites, Heavy Duty, Normal, Delicate, Hand Washables, Clean Washer, Soak, Rinse/Spin, Drain, Spin Options in include Delay Wash for the time you wish it to start, Extra Rinse and Signals that can be turned on or off (and leval of volume) to alert about wash progress. I bought the Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer when we purchased our new home. It worked perfectly until 2.5 years later when it sounded like it was unbalanced. We had a repair man come out (that Whirlpool suggested and they took our machine away 3 weeks ago. They still haven't received the parts to do the repairs. I'm really ticked off as I have a large family of 6 and trips to the laundry mat on top of the costs to repair the machine total more then the cost of a new older style agitator washer would have cost.

I think there are lots of kinks to be worked out in these machines. IF I was to by one of these again, I would pay the extra cost and get the BOSCH.

We have a 3 year old Whirlpool Duet front loader and have had the same mold/odor problems in the seal. I have also tried bleaching, vinegar, Affresh, and leaving the door open. I use only HE detergent and dilute my fabric softner. Whirlpool had no answers, only that I might have to get the seal changed(which is at the least 250 dollars) The problem would still come back, I am afraid. SO much for trying to be environmentally conscious with a HE washer.
