Towels for air conditioning

by Ellen
(south gate, ca. USA)

I was very young when i watched my grandmother wetting towels in cold water and hanging them over open windows during the summer , she also kept it dark and used candles only if needed. i found out why it always stayed cool in the house without the use of electricity.

Never thought of that...
by: Anonymous

Hanging wet towels would never have occurred to me. I sleep in our basement so we don't require much A/C but it's a good tip.

I never would've thought of this
by: Anonymous

We always kept it dark and covered the windows with dark colored sheets and such to keep the sunlight out. I never would've thought to use cold/wet towels, though! I'm going to try this out now, thanks!

Excellent tip

This is a really excellent tip for saving on air conditioning costs! It's so much better for the environment, too. Thanks so much for this practical and useful tip! I'll definitely be trying it.

Great way to keep cool
by: Melody

This is a really great idea. I tried it last night when it was almost 90 and it worked really well. I also tried putting a bowl of ice in front of a small desk fan and that kept my office nice and cool.

Another suggestion
by: Anonymous

A simple tip that works wonderfully well. This is something we do very commonly in India where as you can imagine it can get really hot! Another thing I used to do often on warm nights is to sprinkle some water on the floor all around my bed just before I go to sleep. If you have a little fan running as well, it works like a natural airconditioner - great for a good night's sleep.

It works in some cases
by: Ming

I remember my grandmom used to do that too when we lived in LA, but it only works in some cases. When I lived in Las Vegas, NV, for 105 degree, the towels was dried like 10 minutes or less. It will only work in some weather condition.

It works!
by: David

I too have done this! It works well as a compliment to an A/C system, especially on a super hot day.

My mom did that
by: Randy Inman

My mom has done that with wet towels. She would also put a sheet over dark furniture. She claimed it wouldn't soak up as much heat that way.

Wow! I live in upstate NY and dreaded the thought of buying an A/C conditioner. This just might work...thanks!
