Regular Table Salt - add to the wash

by K.S.
(NY)

Adding about 2 tablespoons of regular table salt to your colors in cold water will brighten and enhance the colors! It will also act as an exfoliliant to get out tougher stains, you may have to let your clothes sit for a while longer by stopping the cycle on the rinse cycle so that all of the salt is absorbed fisrt

The sun and salt that sailors are exposed to 'bleaches' fabric bright white. I can see where salt might help the laundry.

Save on Soap, Get it Cleaner NEW
by: Lynn

I use salt in my dishwater. I can buy the cheapest dish soap, and add about a teaspoon or two of salt to do dishes. I let them sit for about five minutes, and they come so clean so fast! The food and grease just slides right off! Unlike using extra soap, which takes more water and time to rinse off, the soap penetrates, but is not "soapier." I use it in my laundry for the same reason, using less detergent. Salt in the litter box stops odors, too. Use liberally. It won't hurt the cats. Mix it in.

Instantly!! NEW
by: Joni

I wanted to let you know that I had *just* read this article as the washer was filling with cold water with my colors!! My whites are in the dryer! I toodled in the laundry room with salt in hand and put some in the washer. I look forward to seeing the results! I wear a load of white but when I wear colors, they are **Bright** colors!!!

I do have a Tip and I don't know if it's been posted or not. I was surprised that it works! IF you are out of dryer sheets and you have staticy clothing in the dryer take about 12 inches of aluminum foil, .squish into a ball.....Does NOT have to be a tight ball (make more if you'd like) and toss the foil in the dryer. It does remove static!!

Add salt to wash like hard water softener
by: Anonymous

I'm no chemist but one would think that adding salt to the wash would be the same as having a hard water softener. My parents had one installed and everywhere you use soap, only half was necessary. So I'm sure it's the same principle. Wouldn't hurt to try on something replaceable.

Great Advice.
by: Anonymous

I sell Coach handbags, and whenever a person is concerned about color transfer from dark colored clothes to a white or light colored bag, we suggest adding a couple teaspoons of salt to a cold wash. It works like magic at sealing in the color.

It Really Works!
by: Anonymous

I heard about this tip from a friend years ago, I didn't believe it would work, but I didn't think it could hurt either. After trying it out for a month the results were incredible. It stops clothes from fading new or not, it will prevent further damage. I've been using this tip ever since. It also saves alot of money on clothing purchases because my favorite clothes last longer now.

Definitely works!

My friend told me to try salt and it works! Even with hanging clothes out on the line it seems to help with the sun from fading clothes also!

It does work! I have been adding salt to the wash for the last few months and it keeps my most recent purchases looking new! It has kept some of my older clothes from fading more than they already were.
