Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW

by Blake
(Austin, TX)

The Maytag Performa washer is a large capacity machine that works like a champ for years. We have always found our clothes thoroughly cleaned, even in heavy loads of towel or jeans. The machine has worked well with cold water washing and with delicate items as well.

I purchased my washer in August 2000. I have moved it five times since then. It was only in July 2008 that I encountered a problem with the machine. This was a screeching noise when the washer ran. About two months later, the drum also stopped spinning. Now here's what I love about this machine: after years of faultless service, the problems encountered were simple enough for an inexperienced handyman to fix.

Maytag offered two parts assemblies that addressed both issues. The lack of drum spin was fixed by replacing a thrust bearing kit. The screech was fixed by replacing the drain pump. Both parts were available locally and required only three common tools to install.

Occasionally I wish that the product was more energy efficient, as electricity prices have risen steadily over the years. For a high capacity machine, however, it's hard to find one that does not use a lot of juice. I suppose in the balance of things, the fact that we have had no maintenance calls on the appliance since purchase may have offset energy costs. Hard to say.

This machine is junk
by: Anonymous

Multiple expensive repairs (over $100 each time), it leaks and the repairman doesn't know from where. It has caused expensive mold damage to my home, and I will never buy another Maytag.

cheaply made
by: Anonymous

Sign of the times. I have been a maytag repairman for 30 years. I enjoyed working on Maytag washers from the 60's , 70's and early 80's. Problem is that Maytag sold out and let inferior companies manufacture products and place a Maytag name on it. I personally purchased a A608 for 150 bucks after I lost my earlier one in a storm. I could have bought a new one , but the engineering on the new ones cant hold a candle to the engineered ones of the past. My last Maytag washer was 25+ years and the only thing I had to do was replace a hose clamp and a drive belt once. Also never changed a pump in the 30 years because they can be lubricated by removing a screw. The Older Transmissions were excelently built and only an oring may leak after about 25 years and , for me , was about 5.00 to replace , only because I know how. I Work on alot of different makes and see more plactic than should be allowed. Anyway , if you have a chance to buy an older model , it is usually worth the few dollars to buy.

Best regards
Jim

The Best Washer
by: Michelle

I purchased this washer nearly 10 years ago. I have experienced NO problems with the machine until now...the motor is out and the repair man wants to charge me nearly $400.00 to repair. Not worth repairing at this price, so I guess I will be in the market for a new washer. I'm don't want to have to get a new machine, especially since this one has given me very clean clothes and free maintenance for nearly 10 years.

get the wringer out
by: Sue

How do I take the wringer out? My machine will fill with water but no action on washing or spinning. Is the timer out or could I have a nut, bolt, etc... jamming the wringer from turning?

9 Years and going
by: Anonymous

Bought new by me in March 2001

Model PAV2300AWW

After many years of use (about 1 load per day) it developed the infamous balance problem. Horrible vibration, no matter what was in it, that caused it to walk across the floor when spinning out. This problem is fairly easily fixed. A new plastic snubber takes about 2 hours to install. This alleviated the problem, cost me $7.54 including tax. Part number 21002026

Anyone who slams this machine doesn't understand mechanical devices. Everything wears and fortunately the wear part that causes the balancing problem is only a few dollars.

While replacing the snubber I was amazed at how clean everything was inside. No bad bearings, the brake was still like new, no leaks from teh transmission, belt looked perfect, etc etc. All washing machines are cheaply made by nature but this one seems to last

For a large, relatively inexpensive machine it's impossible to fault.

A bit disappointed
by: Anonymous

I'm a bit disappointed in my Maytag. I bought it new six years ago based on a Consumer Reports recommendation, and it was a nice machine at first.

It still cleans well, but is VERY loud on the spin cycle - like 40 bowling balls roaring down the lane for several minutes straight.

Another frustration is that it is getting worse and worse about being out of balance. I am constantly running down to adjust loads on the spin cycle. We are washing the same things we've always washed, but now it won't balance.

And lastly, it's dumping water on the floor. It leaks by the shaft. It started leaking on occasion, then more consistently, and now excessively. Just two of us living here and we do two to three loads a week - so I wouldn't say it has been used excessively.

So if that Maytag guy is still bored, there's plenty to work on here!

Well designed, economical and durable
by: Anonymous

My husband bought our Maytag Performa from his cousin about four years ago. His cousin bought it new at a home improvement store about a year before that. It is a five year old washer. I don't know what the purchase price was.

It is a white color that goes well with anything. It has held up well so far. Aesthetically it still looks new even though I do five to six loads of laundry per week.

The only bad things I have to say about it is that it has kind of a small basin and it overloads easily. A couple times it has leaked slightly because of this. It is also a little bit loud.

Overall I am pleased with it though. It is efficient with water and takes up little space in my laundry room. It seems to do a great job with getting the clothes clean. It has many settings including one for delicates and for wrinkle free clothing and those work well. Sometimes I don't have to iron the clothing I put through the wrinkle free cycle. It also still looks new.

It is the best washing machine that I have ever owned. I believe that Maytag makes some of the best washers. I would recommend the Maytag Performa line of washers to anyone looking for a well designed, economical, durable washer. If you can tolerate the minor flaws like a little noise this will be perfect for you. And remember not to overload it.

No convinced it is any quieter than other washers
by: Anonymous

The Maytag Performa model PAV2300AWW is a great washing machine which I have had for several years now with no problems at all. I bought it at a local independent shop. It is a quiet model, heavy duty, with a two speed motor, ten cycles, and an oversize capacity. You can also wash very small, medium, or large loads in it.

There are also wrinkle free fabrics, delicates, and regular options to choose from. You can also make the water temperature hot, cold, or a blend of the two. You can set it to wash for a longer or a shorter time as well, via the dial. You pull the dial out to get the water to come in.

One thing I have to watch is its tendency to collect dirt, hair, and bits of other material in its central cylinder, and in another area where bleach can be added. These need to be cleaned out every now and then.

Also, I am not totally convinced that it is any quieter than any other washing machines, despite being called part of the quiet series. But overall, it is a highly recommended appliance. It is a Maytag, after all, and we have never had to call for a repairman yet.

Get's clothes clean
by: Benjamin Bright

I have had my Maytag Performa 2300 for over a year now. I am actually the third owner of this washer, and I must say it has served me well! There are options for delicate/regular fabrics and permanent press, as well as the typical Cold/Warm/Hot temperature settings. The design of the washer is pretty typical, however for being slightly older machines I have actually had people ask me if I bought them new.

When running, it’s relatively quiet and has always gotten heavy dirt out without a problem. I tend to do very large loads, and have been impressed with the way it cleans. It’s also never stopped from being unbalanced as some older washers do. You can even do a few blankets at once with no problem.

There are options of what size loads you can do, as well as how long you want the spin cycle to last. This is great as it allows you to save a bit of electricity and/or water depending on what type of load you’re washing. It takes the same amount of time to do a load of wash as every other washer.

All around I would recommend this washer, and really can’t think of anything I would change about it. It looks nice, has every standard setting of a quality washer, and most importantly gets clothes clean!
