Maytag Neptune FAV6800AWW TL

by Gloria
(Illinois)

I purchased a Maytag Neptune TL top load in Jan 2005 after having a Maytag washer for 24 years with constant use with 3 children and a husband with a very dirty profession. I have been very disgusted with the attitude of the 4 repairmen that have been here to try to fix the problem.

I have been disappointed with the constant smell of the machine, you cannot leave your laundry room door open so not to offend guests. I have tried the tablets the company says is the cure and the smell is back the next day.
You do not dare leave a load in the washer when it is done because the clothes will smell like a sewer when you open the lid.

The bleach dispenser and fabric softener always has water in them. Therefore, mold and mildew grows around the receptacles which is disgusting.
Water will drip from the detergent dispenser after the cycle is complete therefore requiring more drying time. So much for energy efficiency!!
I have had clothes washed on the delicate cycle that come out with flecks of mold on them and then need to be washed again.

I also purchased a Maytag dryer that lasted for 24 years, and have replaced it with a Maytag drying center which I am very pleased with.
The Neptune washer has been a major disappointment from Maytag, I would like to purchase another washer that works if Maytag would give some of its faithful consumers a break.

Terrible Washing Machine - DON'T BUY
by: CIndy

My husband bought me this washing machine for Christmas 6 years ago. The clothes do come out in a tangled mess, but I put up with that. Last year the pump went out, so I had to get that repaired. A couple of months ago, every time I washed I found water on the floor plus the washer started sounding like a jet engine (extremely noisy) every time it got to the spin cycle. 4 days ago the washing machine got to the spin cycle and stopped and gave a uC code. I called the repairman and he came out today and to fix the uC (Unbalance Circuit) would be $130 for the part plus labor charges, but while he was looking for the uC problem he found that the seal needed to be replaced and the bearings were shot (which was the cause of the jet engine sound). To replace the bearings would cost $495 plus $25 for shipping costs. I refuse to spend another dime on this horrible washing machine. I had a Kenmore that lasted for more than 20 years with very few problems. My friend's Maytag Neptune quit working after only 12 years and she researched all of the washing machines and just bought a Miele. She said it was expensive but has very few problems plus the customer service from Miele is supposed to be great. I am going to look at some tomorrow. No more Maytags for me!

I have had the NeptuneTL top load for almost 7yrs. The dc and uc codes started about a month ago. I called the repair service line and for $299 bought the extended warrenty. SO the service guy came out and said it woudld be about $900 to fix the stripped transmission, clutch, and leaky tub. Whirpool/Maytag is replacing my washer with a new whirlpool cabrio, not bad for $299!

a washer junk
by: Anonymous

I spent $1000 and bought FAV6800 washer machine in 2005 from BESTBUY. The spin cycle problem happened about 2 years ago. Now it is totally not working at 11 minutes with a dc code.

What I should do? Can I call MAYTAG to ask them send me a $100 coupon so that I can buy another maytag waher machine?

Do you think this is a good idea?

God please forgive my maytag washer machine
by: Anonymous

God help me. My washer machine has always died during spin cycle for years.

I just called the maytag customer service 1-888-462-9824
He asked me at least 6 questions. Then I asked him one question- how to fix my DC code NON-SPIN problem. He said he will schedule a fixer for me. but i need to pay for it. This is so called customer service.

Dirty little secret
by: Anonymous

The mold build up is from the collection of dirt that does not drain between the dispensers and the upper rings. My machine stopped working so upon inspection there was black sledge between the upper rings. I cleaned it out and it was incredible. I owned my machine for 7 years and didn't think this would happen. I called for service and tech said this machine would cost more to fix than to purchase a new one. So now I am off to purchase a new one...any suggestions?

Disappointing!
by: Sandi in Texas

My washer started doing the "unbalanced" thing last month ... almost exactly 6 years to the day! We took it to a local repair shop and they can't figure out what's doing it. I chatted with a Maytag tech online .. total waste of time and the thing that really ticked me off is being asked "are you sure it is level?" EXCUSE ME??? YES! It's been in the SAME spot for 6 years - and it's doing the exact same thing at the repair shop. My husband called Whirlpool since they bought out Maytag and got very little info from them either - other than the name and number of another repair shop that MAY be able to shed some light on the issue. Maybe we should start a Class Action Suit !

Mold build up and odor
by: Anonymous

I also purchased this damn machine (Neptune TL) about 7 years ago and I concur it has been the worst investment of my life. I've tried so many things to rid the machine of the mold and the horrid odor and to date nothing seems to work. For those of you who were able to get rid of the mold/odor please, advise. Greatly appreciated.

Never Maytag again
by: Anonymous

I have not been happy with this washer from day 1, especially the clothes being spun into ropes, but, after five years, it is beginning the off-balance thing...gets to 11 minutes remaining, and starts and stops the spin cycle over and over. It has become much louder as it goes through the spin cycle. A repair alerted us that there has been alot of trouble with this particular machine.
I just read all the comments! With this disaster of a washer, Maytag should make good to its customers..their previously good name is NO MORE!
Oh yes, I have had another problem which I contribute to this washer....It has pulled strings out of some of my towels, even makeing some holes. I have stopped washing anything on the longest cycle.

Cleaned out mold myself
by: Cleaned Maytag TL

After researching my stinky washer I found this forum (and several other web postings) about people taking apart the washer to clean out the gross mold and mildew.

Yes I found the service manual on the web and gutted it all the way down to the outer barrel. Yes it was gross but after 5 hours methodically bleaching/scrubbing/rinsing and useing a little steam machine I was able to put back the box together good as new. Allocate 4-5 hours because I took my time cleaning/bleaching every part affected throughly. This was after 7 years of use and the smell started about a month ago. I thought the moldy smell was a combination of humidity in the air and leaving stuff in the washer too long before putting it the dryer.

Now that I have a fresh machine I will leave the lid open between cycles, avoid "organic" liquid soaps (and warm washes with it - going back to powder) and be sure to run a vinegar or bleach run once a month to prevent the buildup.

Yes it was gross and disgusting but there is nothing mechancally wrong with this box so I couldn't justify spending a grand right now.

I am tire of my stinky Maytag Neptune TL
by: Pam

I agree, this Maytag Neptune TL is so darn rotten and stinky. I am tired of trying to clean it. I have tried all products, bleach, vinegar, one person suggested Lime away - I have filled it with hot water and the products and let it set for days and agitated a little, and let it set longer, and it still stinks. I am ready to just give it away, but wouldn't want to put others through the same thing.
I hate to have to junk it, but I can't stand the smell. In the beginning, I was embarrassed thinking I was doing laundry wrong - no it is the stinky washer. Maytag should do something for us suckers - I had Maytag before, and always thought they were dependable, what a joke.
Thanks for listening.

Adios Maytag
by: Maggie

I am amazed there are so very many complaints about the Maytag Neptune. I paid 1000.00 for a front loader in 2005 which I was so proud to own. Within two years with very limited use, the machine was defunct. I called a repairman several times to which his repair estimate for parts only was $400. Phooey-never will I try Maytag again, nor any product associated with it. I am thoroughly disgusted and disillusioned with Maytag. Adios-after many years I bid you goodbye.

I've had the machine since 2004 and it worked fine until 2 weeks ago. Took the clutch off and the bearings were rusted and not working. Spent over 100.00 on new one snd after I put the new clutch on I ran a quick wash cycle with the front panel off. It worked fine and then I saw water dripping from above. Now to fix the leak I have to spend another 100.00 to 200.00 to fix this POS.I will never buy a Maytag appliance again!!!!!!!!!

Neptune - Outer Space, Right?
by: Anonymous

Our Neptune TL FAV 6800 worked well since Summer of 2005 (Cost $999). Now can't get past 11 min's before goint to 'dc' balance error. Friday night took 2 hours to finish load. This morning I spent 2 1/2 hours (with 3 kids interrupting me)opening machine (LET ME BE PERFECTLY CLEAR - THERE IS NO ACCESS PANEL SO DON'T TRY TO FIND IT! You are better off using tin nippers to create an access window in rear bottom near hose/pump setup) Disconnected front from right side, checked hoses, hoping it was a simple clog, they looked clear. I'm not spending $400 to $500 on parts and service call. Buying new one this week. LG's got a nice window top unit so you can watch your Aaron Rodgers jersey slog around in the machine.

UNbalance problem
by: Anonymous

I have the unbalance problem too. I took the clutch off and it was rusted on the top side where the bearing is and I think its locked up. I'm soaking in wd40 overnight to see if I can get it apart. When I took the spring cover out I discovered it is bent where the steel pin is and the pin was just sitting inside like it was ripped out (probably from the bearing seized). I bent it back but if I can't get the bearings apart I will have to replace the clutch. I'm wondering why its rusted only on top? Maybe the tub seal is leaking but I don't see any water or corrosion anywhere else. We also have the bad smelling clothes sometimes too especially jeans when they get wet like a rainy day. I thought it was the soap or softener.

I purchased a $2000 set in 2005 and it has been nothing but trouble. Maytag needs to make things right. I had a washer and dryer that lasted 20 years. That set didn't cost nearly as much as this set. This maytag washer only lasted 5 years. like most people I don't have $2000 to just throw away. When you pay that much for something you expect it to be top of the line. The only line it's at the top of is Certified Piece of S**T. Maytag needs to discontinue all products they make. Don't buy any of their products. They don't do right by there customers

We just found mold in ours!!!
by: Anonymous

I paid $1000 for just the washer. I was so happy when I bought it because the house we bought came with the matching dryer so now I had a matching set! My husband has hated this machine since it came in the door. Too loud. Twisting the clothes. Towels that were washed last week smell moldy. The list goes on. We have always run one 'clean' cycle at least every two weeks. Well in the last month it just smells! So my husband saw on the web about the mold problem that some people we having, went and looked. Sure enough its there, black mold! I am SO upset!! My son, whose room is right above the laundry room is allergic to all molds. He's been having lots of breathing problems lately and sleeping in another room. Could this be why?? As soon as my husband called me and told me what he found I told him to get the machine out of the house! It is now outside on my deck. Now I get to figure out how to dispose of it. I ran right out an bought a new washer. I am very angry right now!!

Wow, this is the worst appliance I have ever purchased in the 35 years I have been married. Our neptune is now officially on the "p.o.s. list"!!!! The repairman finally gave up and said he had no idea how to fix it. He tried the change the main board and then another board somewhere in the bottom, now said something else is wrong but cant figure it out. He told us from the beginning that this machine has been a nightmare for customers and it probably would be better just to send it to the dump. I got 5 years out of it. Hmmmm.....No more maytag or whirlpool for me.

Yes, I had the same problems with the no-spin, off balance load at about the 3 1/2 year mark. Good thing I had an extended warranty because the repairman had to replace everything to get it to work.
Now the thing is beeping and cycling through on the touch panel. I have had to keep it unplugged. That part is about $200.00. I will not put anymore money into this. Maytag or Whirlpool could not care less about me or you, just the money. The brand names they use are also Amana, Admiral, Estates, Kitchenaid, Roper and for Canada- Ingles.
I will avoid these names when choosing my next appliance.

Final outcome "the clutch" which I was told would cost 500.00 to fix. My new way of thinking when purchasing a washer is get one of the cheapest ones with a 5 year warranty and if I get more than 5 years out of it then great. At least I didn't spend 900.00+

My machine won't drain and it's full of water. My husband called someone and they give you a ONE year parts and labor on the machine and 10 years on parts. Maybe that's because they know they are gonna sock ya with a huge labor bill. Then they want to charge ya to come and figure out what the problem is. All I can say is their commercials are nothing but lies. We bought this machine because we wanted a machine to last and it won't unlock or drain. HELP. I can't be without a machine. There are no laundry mats where we live. Highly disappointed. I think there needs to be another class action suit from what I am reading. This is nonsense! Make a machine that works or get out of the business. Or if it's a repeat problem fix it and take care of your customers that have the problem. IT'S CALLED A RECALL ON THE MACHINE DUH

Our FAV6800 crapped out on us this month - "LL" code and won't spin. After researching online, we've decided to trash it and get another unit rather than making an attempt to repair it. We too paid almost a thousand dollars for the washer alone (around $1700 for the set) in 2005 and are frustrated there is no recourse, given most owners are running into the same problem.

It's a easy fix!
by: Anonymous

First off all low water usage machines have smell problems. It's a fact of life, leave the door open.

We had a Neptune front loader and recieved a $400 check to purchase a maytag neptune toploader. So it's 5 and a half years old NOW and started getting the dc and uc error codes recently and yesterday it became constant.

I repaired computers before retiring and so I opened it up and eventually found the clutch. I should have used google first and gone directly to the clutch.

Intermittent problems are just a lubrication problem. Clean with WD-40 then put on grease. But in my case the spring inside it broke. It was a simple job to heat the spring and put a new end on it for me but a new one can be had for $75.
Total cost to me, a burned finger, watch out the spring stays hot, and about 2 hours total going at it blindly.

Anybody that's at all handy can fix this and if it needs a clutch it's much cheapaer then a new washer.

After having it all apart and back together I used a generous quanty of bleach and some Dawn dish soap on a quick wash. Lots of bubble but It's now a sweet smelling washer.
there are special products for this problem.

You can moan groan and complain or get your hands dirty and fix it for free or $75 at the most, your choice.

Stay away from this machine and any other Maytag crap if you want to send them a message. I have had this POS for over 5 years and nothing but trouble. I get the 11 minutes to go thing and then they clothes are soaked. I have to ope the lid with the top of the machine, hold the wet clothes over the spinning tub and drop them in one at a time while in spin mode. The close the lid and pray it finishes.

Now it just quit spinning all together even when empty. POS POS. Stay away.

i've experienced a lot of the problems that the people above have experienced, however, theres two things you can do to alleviate some of that headache that is this machine.
1st, just constantly leave your washer open. that way it can air dry, and u wont have to deal with the putrid smell or the mold.
2nd, if you unplug the washer and wait like 20 seconds, plug it back in and sometimes the locking problem will fix itself.

still, overall this machine is a complete turd. sometimes it shakes so bad i think my washer is attempting tap dancing.

bought neptune tl in Sept 2004, spent more than I ever had on this appliance thinking it would be worth it. Independent repairman said they've had alot of trouble with these machines. With about 12 minutes in cyle left dc indicatior shows & it won't spin out. Guess that's cause bottom seal goes out, leaking h20 on belt, then slips, eventually clutch goes out. Now with a part estimate over $500, excluding labor I would say it's junk only after 6 yrs. Unfortunately brand name doesn't mean anything anymore :(

Maytag Neptune TL washer
by: gcsibill

Several years ago Maytag recalled their front load Neptune washers after facing a class action lawsuit. Too bad that it didn't include the TL (top load) washers as well. I've had mine 6 years and am having to replace the clutch for the second time (won't spin with 10-13 minutes left, "dc" code, etc.). From the comments posted on various sites, I've been lucky. Spent $1000 because I wanted a washer that would last. Maytag/Whirlpool rep only offered 15% rebate on new machine--they can keep that! I'll go for the simplest and cheapest machine from now on.

Machine sucks
by: BJ

I bought this new in 2004, and overall, it has been an overpriced pain in my butt ever since. I've only tolerated it because I can't afford to replace it right now.

Some of its "features" I've experienced first hand:

* It ties your clothes in knots during the wash cycle. Your clothes come out like ropes, whether it's a full load or not.

* You have to run it on a "Super Wash" like setting to get a good cleaning.

* Be careful with the lid latches - I've broken both of them off and I've had to superglue them back together.

* My personal favorite - the "11 minutes to go" spin cycle loop, where it can't drain before the tub goes out of balance. I replaced multiple parts trying to rectify this problem, but it is a design flaw. The only solution I found that worked every time is you do a completely full laundry load. If you have to wash a small load, load up the washer with towels or something similar. For some reason that extra weight eliminates the balancing problems, but it's hardly good for your towels that are getting washed unnecessarily...

In its defense, it DOES save water - but ALL new washers today do that, and that's all I can say positive about it.

Bottom line: Even if someone gives you one for free, say "thanks" and wait for them to leave. Then immediately take it to the junk yard and sell it for scrap. Use the small chunk of cash and buy a better machine. If you don't, you'll BE SORRY.

Very Disgusted and Disappointed!
by: Anonymous

I am amazed at all the bad luck people have been having with the Maytag Neptune TL. We are experiencing the same mold problems as everyone else. We purchased this supposed state of the art washer in 2003 and it has been a headache ever since. The efficiency is no use now since we are constantly running vinegar or bleach washes through every week. Upon my wife calling the technician service and describing the problem, she was told it seems to be an "environmental problem". The tech suggested that we had too much humidity in our house. What a load of crap! So, needless to say, we had to call it a loss and purchased a brand new LG front loader. I won't even try to pawn this piece of crap on anybody else. All it's good for now is scrap metal! Never buy a Maytag!

Avoid purchasing this appliance at all costs, if you have the chance to be given one of these things, first call the scrap yard to see what they will give you for it, make sure that it will be worth your time in gas to take it there, because this is all this machine is worth, scrap !!!

You cn use the above comments to elaborate on why, if anyone anywhere has one that works, I would be extremely shocked.

I guess I'm the new guy on the block with this piece of junk. My machine is at the repair shop now as my repair man does not have a clue what is wrong with it. He has insaulted two new clutches and now it will not spin.I am going to phone him in the morning and see if he know what is going on and if I am looking at a large amount for repairs I will just tell not to fix it I go buy a new machine NOT A MAYTAG.My husband and I were married for 33years before be bought this machine and thought maytag got to be good we bought the matching dryer to paid 2,000.00 for the pair. Boy did we get burn it is not even 5years old and it is just my husband and myself in the house so there has been no abuse on the machine I have treated it like gold. Now to top it off my maytag dishwasher is on the recall list. Maybe maytag should just shut their doors as they don't seem to know how to put out a good poduct anymore.

I bought a maytag tl fav6800aww,in 2006. For the first year it was good but suddenly things went down hill fast.my clothes stunk horribly.I have a family of four. no matter what I didt the smell kept getting worse,
the maytag customer service told me that i needed to buy the tabs to clean my machine and so i did, that didn't work . so then they told me to run a cup of clorox through a cycle once a week, all that did was to ruin my clothes when i washed after cleaning my machine. we have a horrible moldey smell in all our clothes and especially the towels with clorox spots on them. So my husband read that if you soak your clothes for 24 hours in lysol water it would take the moldy smell out.so now I am a working mother of a family of 4 soaking our clothes in the bathtub for 24 hours. the laundry room floor is full of dirty laundry awaiting their turn to be soaked, while running tabs and clorox water through the wasing cycle trying to clean my rusty, moldy, stinky, tying up clothes in knots, not wringing all the water out, sorry hunk of junk maytag calls a washing machine.yes I think the only human and honest loyal thing to do is to give me my money back. they did say they would replace the tub, but in a year heres my problem again.so no thank you maytag,do whats right for your customers give their money back. And to the workers that are tired of hearing complaints,I wash my machine more than i get to wash my clothes i don't have time for this, and i have never experienced any washer like this before and the expectence of a good washer is at least past 8 to 9 years. speaking from experience i promise you.I can't afford to go out and buy another machine, I desperatly need for maytag to step up to the plate and do the right thing for their customers.

always out of balance
by: Anonymous

We've had this model for a little over 3 years, and it's been nothing but headaches. Would have been nice to know that this model was already discontinued before we bought it. Repairman recently told my husband and I that it was this particular machine that led to the buyout of Maytag by Whirlpool. I have two small children and am constantly doing loads of laundry. The machine is now ALWAYS out of balance and I am having to hand-wring my clothes before putting them in the dryer. NO ONE seems to know how to fix this machine - and I'm beginning to think that it can't be fixed - that it's just very poor design. What a piece of junk!

total lemon
by: Ginger

This has been the most disappointing washing machine we have ever owned. Our first Maytag machine was purchased in 1984 and was still working perfectly when it was replaced with the Maytag Neptune TL in 2005. Our original Maytag Dryer had gone out for the second time, so we made the decision to replace the pair at the same time in 2005. What a mistake that was!

This machine twists the clothes into ropes and is constantly "off balance". It takes one hour to wash a load which is totally ridiculous and drips filthy liquid from the top door once it is opened at the end of the cycle ruining the clean clothes. The clothes do not have the clean smell one expects to find after washing ever.

This product is a total failure. Way to go Maytag...you should be ashamed of producing a true lemon.

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE! CLUTCH PROMBLEMS, MOLDY SMELL,NOW I'VE BEEN TOLD I NEED A NEW $500. TUB AND THE WARRANTY IS UP! A law suit was just settled on the older models. I ALSO THINK THERE SHOULD BE A LAWSUIT ON THE NEWER PIECE OF JUNK MODELS. Oh and i forgot about the oil leaking. I purchased this machine in 2006 and have spent more time at the laundry mat than I care to remember. DONOT BUY MAYTAG!

I will never buy a Maytag ever again
by: Anonymous

We purchased our washing machine on November 6, 2004. After two years, we had a problem with the clutch. We had a warranty and it was repaired. We have mold problems with this model. I clean the machine with bleech and every three months but the mold is still there. Then 2 weeks ago, the display unit showed "od". I reported it immmediately and had someone come out and look at it. The repairman was on the phone most of the time. I had downy in the dispenser and he just dispensed it into the tub without even wiping it down. He told me that we should get a call from someone to come out and look at the electronics so I waited all day. No one called and no one came over. Then two days later, I called the Maytag warranty number and they said all they had on record was that I had a call in and nothing else. I had to call the repair shop that looked at the washer. I had to find out what was happening because I had no clue. I was told a part was ordered and would come in the following week. The following week no one called until one week and one day after the washer was looked at that they called my house. My daughter was home and they told her that the part cost $695.00 and that it was not covered under the warranty. So for a week and a half no one called me to tell me that my warranty was totally useless or that no one was coming out to repair the washing machine. So, I am in the same spot when I discoverd the washing machine does not work 2 weeks later.
I will never ever buy a Maytag product again and I will share my story with everyone that I know includind all my friends all over the country thru the internet.

Horrible washing machine
by: Sboyd

I purchase the Maytag Neptune TL in 2003. The first year the door would not unlock without turning the machine on and off several times. After about 3 weeks of this it suddenly worked as it should and I have not had that problem since. I have been greatly disappointed in how twisted and wrinkled the clothes are when the wash is complete. Even permanent press are still wrinkled when removed from the dryer. Last year the bleach and fabric softner dispensers stopped dispensing. Not having the funds to pay for repairs I now use fabric softener sheets and I stop the washer in mid wash to add the bleach. About two weeks ago the washer stopped at the rinse cycle and would not go to spin. The flashing error code isn't even in the manual. The machine has also started leaking water in the tub all the time. To complete a load of laundry I let the machine run until it stops, then put it back on short wash just to rinse the clothes properly, cut the machine completely off then hit spin cycle only. I notified Maytag and they replied with this dissertation of how they take pride in their products and value their customers and then ask for the actual date the washer was purchased. Who keeps a receipt for almost 6 years???! The washer I had before the Maytag lasted for over 14 years and cost around $300.00. I paid over a $1000.00 for the Maytag and it didn't make it through the first year without problems. Rather than pay high prices for parts and labor to repair the Maytag I will save my pennies and purchase a new washer. But I can assure you,I will never purchase a Maytag or Whirlpool product again. Maytag should be sued for false advertisement.....Loneliest repairman in town...MY Foot!!!

worst washing machine ever!!
by: Anonymous

I too purchased a Maytag Neptune FAV6800Aww in March 2005. I am thoroughly disgusted with this product as I have had multilpe issues with mold, broken bearings, and the tub not emptying during the spin cycle. After the repairman left last week with $250.00 the spin cycle is now non existent. I have to hand wring my clothes. Furthermore, there is no agitator and my clothe, especially pants and sheets, come out in a twisted tangle every time! I, too am having this piece of junk halled off and am looking to purchase a new washer....definitely not a Maytag Neptune!!!!

Worst machine ever
by: Anonymous

We purchased our Neptune TL in mid 2004. Now in May 2009, it would not empty the tub for the spin cycle. Repair man came and ordered $200 clutch + labor and installed. The washer leaked on the first washload, so the repairman ordered a $300 + labor bearing assembly to be installed today. He just left with the $300 part because when he opened the machine he discovered that ANOTHER set of bearings under the tub also needed to be replaced and the retail of that part is over $500!!! I am paying $20 for Jaco to come pick it up and we now have to buy a new washer. You would expect, for the money paid, that a Maytag TL would last longer than 4 1/2 years, especially since it was in storage for half a year and it was only used by 2 people. A great disappointment in this economy!!
