Maytag Legacy Series Top Loader

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. After four years the washer made noises. A year later it leaked and still made noises. The bearing is making the noise and the water leak came from the water pump. We are buying a new washer and it will NOT be a Maytag. I have heard of buyers hoping for a class action suit against Maytag for building the Legacy series. I hope this will benefit you in making a choice about used washing machines.

Just had ours go down in flames exactly how all the other reviewers have. Bought from Home Depot in Oct. 2004 after 3 yrs one repair for $175. NOW, had the terribly loud spin cycle with water running out of bottom, did this for about 1 month before complete burnout. Absolute junk!!! Maytag reputation is over...even retailers are catching on.

We bought this washer in July of 2003 along w/a 3 year certificate of coverage to gain the added benefit of knowing our washer would be covered under any circumstance that would arise.
Within the 2nd year of the warranty, the washer started to sound like a train idling at the station and progressively over the years has gotten worse. Now when we start it up, it still sounds like a train at the station and has the death rattle of a fighter jet taking off at a military base.
We have to close the laundry room door and turn up the T.V. about 15 notches in the other room from it's normal point to listen or sort of read lips. Maybe I should just turn on my closed caption and wear some ear plugs at a 90 decibel rating so I can read along and avoid earlier hearing loss. As for the certificate we bought, it was not worth the paper it was written on.
We had the technician come on over and look at it and he agreed that the it was making loud noise and that it needed a bearing. But the way that the policy is written, they will not replace the unit or part until it is damaged.
So once the bearing goes out completely and the machine does not operate, then they will come out and repair or replace the damaged part.
In short, I have had other Maytag products that have lasted for years but this one really ticks me off just due to the fact that this machine will not die and still sounds like T-Rex yelling in my back yard and has a unpleasant odor like mold if you do not use it on a regular basis.
My advice is to avoid this machine and do not buy any type of warranty which is another waste of money.
If you are considering buying a used one run for the hills, unless you may want to purchase an additional headset for watching t.v. with a remote system that allows you to watch and listen to the t.v. at your own hearing level.

It Sucks. Leaves a lot of lent on your clothes. Now it makes a loud engine like sound while it is in the wash cycle. It does not wash the clothes anymore.

I had my washing machine for 4 years. Now it has a grinding noise. It will not clean the clothes and the sound is like a big engine gone bad. It sound like motor propellers. It still spins out the water during rinse cycle, but that is it. After a year or two I realize that lent remained on my clothes. It really started messing up my clothes leaving a lot of lent. Instead of cleaning the clothes, it made my clothes worst.

Do not by it. You will regret it.

I AM TRYING TO FIX THIS MODEL RIGHT NOW AND MAYTAG CANT EVEN HELP. THE MODEL NUMBER ON MINE IS MISSING. THEY SAY THEY CANT HELP SINCE I DONT KNOW WHAT PART I NEED. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE BEARING STARTED FIRING UP LIKE A FIGHTER JET. SEEMS TO BE EVRY YEAR OR TWO THIS WILL NEED REPLACING. WAITING FOR IT TO PULL THE WALL DOWN OR BREAK A PIPE. THIS WILL BE THE LAST FIX ON THIS WASHER. I DO IT MYSELF AND ITS STILL 100.00 FOR THE PART AT THE LOCAL APPLIANCE SHOP WHO IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS WASHER AND DONT NEED A PART NUMBER DO TO VOLUME OF COMPLAINTS. I WOULD RECOMMEND TO ANYONE BUYING THIS MACHINE TO INVEST IN SOME SPARE PARTS AHEAD OF TIME AND SOME CHAIN TO KEEP IT IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM. OR STEER CLEAR OF MAYTAG.. Very unhappy with Maytag. Maytag use to have a good reputation with quality service. It costs $129 for a repair man to look at your machine and another $150 to attempt to fix your loud jet like emission noise on the spin cycle. It seems all repairmen are very familiar with this complaint. Its the bearing! Just brought a new washer and it is not a Maytag!

Absolutely agree, this washer is rubbish. We had a Maytag refrigerator - nothing but trouble from day one -threw it out after 18 months, of ongoing repairs and replacements. Our Maytag stove malfunctioned when using the self-cleaning feature and now less than two years after buying another piece of rubbish from Maytag, we are faced with either a big repair bill or replacement. We were suckers to even look at Maytag again. No wonder they got rid of "old lonely" the Maytag repairman with the stuff they are making. Maytag went downhill ever since they were bought out by Whirlpool Beware, Whirlpool manufacture under many names, they just change the cosmetics and slap on another logo. Will NOT look at any more products made in North America - I said made, but more like assembled since they import parts from all over the world - the cheapest money can buy. Slowly but surely the Asian manufactured household appliances are replacing those assembled in North America just as Asian automobiles replaced those made in Detroit.

We bought a house that came with a Maytag Legacy Series Washer and Dryer. A year and half later the ceiling of the level underneath our laundry room had water stains and started buckling from over a gallon of water that had leaked from the piece of junk washing machine. It had also started making a very loud noise while running and never filled up with water as much as it should have for the load size. So here we are looking for a new washer and having drywall replaced!

I thought my house was on fire when it filled with smoke and a nasty,nasty smell was coming from my laundry area found out it was the washer thanks to the fire department. We bought this new at home depot about 4 yrs ago I would have excepted it to last longer than that my last washer that I bought used lasted 10 yrs. It's nice to know maytag was making a product that that wasn't worth crap and we all got duped by maytag. I cannot afford to spend hundreds of dollars every few years for a washer so thank you maytag I have decided to go old school and get my mother's wringer washer that she has had since 1950 and still going strong

I bought my Legacy Series in 2003~~within a year it started leaking, called Maytag~~they sent a repairman out, we were told the wrong part had been put in the washer. Now 7 years later its leaking again, not a little but over the whole floor~~I called Maytag~~I was told its probally off balance, push the agitator back then to the left and then to the right and everytime bringing it back to center, that did not work! what a piece of crap!! what happened to Maytags good name?

At least the Maytag man is now busy! Same problems as listed below. Mine is now officially dead. It's pretty bad when a $10 sprinkler head in my yard outlast my washer. Like the rest of you, I'm done with Maytag.

I agree, the Legacy series Maytag washer is junk. Within the first year, I had to replace a belt. It was covered by warranty but a belt should not give within a year. My washer is now six years old and about a year ago it started to make so much noise when in the spin cycle. Apparently it is the bearing kit that needs to be replaced, but I know that is not going to be cheap, so I have yet to fix it. It is so loud that I have to use the phone upstairs because I can hear over the washer. I will never buy another maytag product again. All of their products are junk. I also have a maytag refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove, Had to replace the heating coil in stove within the first year. The dishwasher is supposed to be the quiet type and it sounds like a mac truck is coming thru the kitchen and the door release broke within two years, utensil basket broke within two years. My refrigerator motor blew after a power outage and had to have that replaced within 2 years. And, the service department is impossible to deal with-they do not care about customer service. If you are considering a Legacy Series Washer and Dryer or a Maytag in general...DO NOT BUY MAYTAG ANYTHING!!!!

My Legacy just started to leak this week (about 5ish years bought from Home Depot)

Apparently from what I keep reading it is more with buying a new machine than to fix the seal where it is leaking from by the tub. I hope there is a class action.. i am super upset about this. My dryer is almost 10 years old and works great. Go figure (not a maytag by the way.)

I would advise any consumer not to buy a MAYTAG washer!

We bought our "dog"of a washer at Home Depot on North Memorial Parkway in Huntsville,Al. It is not 2 years old until July, and before the machine was 3 months old, the transmission went out, now it happened again.Maytag will furnish the part, but I have to pay the labor, and the repair company will come only if I pay them an extra $100.00,plus labor, and refuse to quote an estimate on the labor. I don't have anything repaired without an estimate. This "repair"company, gives new meaning to "MAYTAG MAN" and they are located in Hazel Green,Al. I won't name them, but the name of their company starts with an "A". They are worse than MAYTAG!

This is the 3rd MAYTAG I have had to buy in 3 years.I must be a slow learner, BUT NO MORE MAYTAGS!

DO NOT BUY ONE.

I hate Maytag

Bought the Maytag Legacy a few years ago. Had it repaired after about 3 months the spin cycle went out leaving the clothes very wet, had it repaired again. Now it takes a notion every now and then to stop in the middle of the cycle and rest does not come back on until I start shopping online for another machine. I hate this machine, I also do not want to put out this much money on a washer every few years. The worst is I dont' know if there is a reliable company to buy from anymore. Don't buy this machine.

Had the washer for about 4 yrs. It would just stop mid-wash. It would not do anything just sit there dead.Next day it would work fine for a while .Noticed the motor would get real hot .When it cooled down it would work again.
Prior washer was a Maytag had it for many yrs. I will not buy Maytag again.

I'VE ONLY HAD THIS MAYTAG LESS THAN A YEAR AND IT DOESN'T CLEAN YOUR CLOTHES GOOD AT ALL IT LEAVE A WHITE FILM ON YOUR DARK CLOTHES AND I USE LIQUID SOAP. I HATE THIS MACHINE.

My husband had the washer and dryer combo before we got married. It was used for 3 years by a bunch of bachelors who abused it and stuffed it full. It seemed to work fine for what they needed. As soon as I started using it I realized that my clothes were way to finicky. My undergarments and socks were getting torn up in this machine. My sweaters were getting picks on them. The dryer never seemed to get the clothes very dry on the first go through. Every load has to be dried twice guaranteed. Stay away from this machine if you plan on using it for any length of time. Also if you have clothes that are more delicate, this machine will eat them guaranteed.

We purchased this Maytag washing machine at
Home Depot. Should have known better.
America has become a throw away society.
Unfortunately, even Maytag, does not appear to be
concerned with producing quality products anymore.

This washer was repaired 3 times in the first year under the Maytag warranty. Then one month after the first year warranty the goofy washer went out again. The bearing goes bad and then the washing machine leaks. On callin Maytag warranty service and explaining the problem, they at first refused to repair, the fourt time. With persistance, we finally got them to repair the machine again. Now two years later, here we are again. Same problem. We are ditching this machine and going with another brand.

We will never purchase a Maytag product again.

Pros:
-Uses less water and detergent
-Quiet

Cons:
-Rubber seal gets moldy (Musty smell grows if washer is closed tightly while off)
-It is not easy to add a garment once it has been started.

This is a great washer. It is energy efficient, quiet, and does not leave the little holes in clothes that some washers do. However, we learned that we need to leave the door open while it is not in use because remaining water sealed up in the washing chamber can cause mildew to grow. Stinky!

Consumers definately need to file a Class Action Lawsuit against Maytag as this Legacy 06 washer is the poorest quality possible. The problem is with a slow or no spin which leaves your wash dripping wet!

Maytag did provide a new transmission as the machine is now nearing 3 yrs old but its had this problem almost from the first loads. Repairman won't work on this Legacy Maytags due to the problems installing parts due to poor Maytag design.

I will NEVER buy another Maytag product again. By the way, the dryer won't heat now and Maytag won't stand back of their products because they are aware these machines made especially in 2006 are just a worthless piece of junk!!!

DO NOT BUY THIS WASHER. As with the other reviewer, ours is four years old and makes a terrible noise when spinning. Now it is leaking and has ruined our floor. This is a terrible machine. My first Maytag washer lasted 19 years and I bought this one. The repairman told me I should have kept the old one and had it fixed because the new Maytags are not built the same as before.
