maytag Bravos

by Sandy
(Payson, AZ)

I do NOT recommend this machine. If you want a front loader, get a front loader that loads in front. This one has torn buttons from our clothes, it ties pants in a knot, and it rips more fragile clothes.

We bought ours at Home Depot about 4 months ago. They told us that we would get $200 from the town for buying a low water machine. After installation, they then told us that we had to submit a request ahead of time in order to get the incentive from the town. We were scammed by the Home Depot salesman.

Unfortunately I didn't send it back right then.
(I should have)

I see these "top loading - front load" low water use washers becoming obsolete and going off the market as soon as this fad is over.

Worst piece of ^*#(*$ ever!
by: Anonymous

We bought the latest Bravo 700 series on Friday, was delivered on Saturday, was taken back by store on Monday!! Everything you read here is right on target. No water, no control over settings, wrinkled and beaten to pieces clothes, dryer does not dry. Washer is so noisy that you can't hear anything when it is washing, takes way way tooooo long to wash. Generally they should be ashamed to call this a Maytag or even a washer. I have used Maytags all my life and always loved them, then got this piece of junk. Whoever designed this should be fired!

I used the Maytag Bravos on bulky to get more water in it, and smaller loads then I normally would. Make sure all the setting are where you want them, once you start you can not change them to something else. However when I get another washer it will be the front loader that I had intended on getting in the first place. This one was kinda given to me, I miss my old washer, at lease I could controll the water level and how long I wanted it to run.

Maytag Bravos junk
by: Anonymous

Purchased the Maytag Bravos Eco washing machine approximately 2 years ago and it has been nothing short of worthless, it can't level itself so it continually refills and drains, using three times the water of a 20 year old machine, therefore drying time is tripled, using three times the electricity, some eco friendly appliance it is, NOT! Will never purchase another Maytag appliance and wouldn't sell this one, would end up making enemies. It'll be a street side salvage queen soon.

Bravo Worst Washing Machine
by: Anonymous

My Whirlpool washer quit on me so I went to Lowes to purchase a new one. The Lowes sales man suggested the Maytag Bravo. He said if you do a lot of laundery it would save on water because it adjusts to the load. This sounded good so I bought one. I am very disappointed. It saves on water but it takes 1 hour to do a small load. So what you save on what you use in electricity. You can not use just cold water the machine will not run. It has to have hot water to run. This caused wrinkles in the clothes. White clothes that can't be bleached come out a dingy gray. I have had this machine for 11 months and if I could get rid of this machine I would do it tomorrow. Give me the simple Whirlpool with the cycles you can set yourself. This technology is going backwards not forward in this day and age.

Never By Maytag Anything!
by: Anonymous

Add me to the list, I to got took by the HOME DEPOT sales person on the Bravos washer. This thing is a piece of crap.I paid over $2300.00 for my washer and dryer set and have been very dissatifed. This thing will not get your cloths clean. If you want clean cloths out of this washer you have to stop the machine and hand scrub them your self. About a month ago mine started acting crazy on its own and doing things outside the cycle I set it on. Like not enough water, no dasher action at all, then draining itself before the cycle was calling for it to do.We made it work by resetting it (unpluging the power), pluging it back in, and starting all over with the cycle. Today the lid locked and it would not let go until I unpluged again. Got the door open, but trying to complete the cycle the washer gave a code, you could make out on the display. Now the door will not lock and you cannot wash anything. Thank God I purchased the extra 4 year warranty, with 2 years left on it. Repair man coming Tue.,on the 15th. of june this year I hope. But I'll bet he won't have the part or parts to repair it. Any Takers. Please someone who has a lawyer in their pocket lets start a law suit, I'm game.

We love our Bravos!
by: Anonymous

I am almost afraid to say that we are very happy with these machines! The extra-large capacity, various cycle selections and quiet operation are all good. The only time laundry came out twisted was when I did not follow the instructions on the proper loading of sheets--they must be dropped in the washer in clumps, not in the traditional manner of unfolding the sheet and winding it around the sides of the tub. Once I did it correctly, no further twisting resulted.

The only reason I am not giving it five stars is that I must always use the "extra rinse" setting for best results. The dryer is a dream--very sensitive heat controls and I love the steam settings. After reading thse reviews, I feel very fortunate!

Bravos is junk
by: Anonymous

The Maytag Bravos washing mashine is the biggest piece of junk I have ever purchased. You can neither wash a small load or large one without it going unbalanced. If it ever makes it through a wash, it takes a half an hour to shake all the wrinkles out. Spent $1000 on it and will be glad to throw it in the dump.

BE WARNED
by: BONNIE

We bought the Maytag Bravo washer and dryer set in July 2010. From day one we have had problems with the washer. The washing cycle will not complete leaving one minute on the timer, which then will not release the lid lock. Service technicians came out three times in August 2010 and two times in September 2010. They changed the control board out twice and then more or less told us they didn't know what to do with it Since I had been without a washer for approx. two months, my husband took a stab at it and found out that if we turned the power off (twice, quickly), he could get the washer to reset and work. He figured it out. They never did. We have been doing that for over a year. We have tried talking to Maytag and wanted them to stand up behind their lemon law. Good luck with that!! Home Depot where we bought the washer is also unresponsive. I hate this washer with a passion, clothes are never clean, and wadded up in balls, but we are retired with limited resources so we are pretty much stuck. Don't buy it!!!! Also the dryer is now broken and won't start. Service techs have tried twice now to fix it (changing control boards), and now they say a part needs to be ordered and it will be until the 24th of February!! Has anyone thought about a class action suit against Maytag and Home Depot. There seems to be lots of us out there. I would sign up!!

Horrible... do not buy Maytag Bravos!!!!!
by: Anonymous

I hate the Bravos series, gym clothes from my boys still smell after they have been laundered several times. We also have found holes in the clothes. Everything comes out twisted and wrinkled. I learned that if I shake out each towel before I put it into the dryer it may actual dry with only one dry cycle. The dryer does not dry the clothes in the forty minute cycle and I end up running them through a second cycle. I actually line dry a lot of my tops....so I run in through a ten minute dry cycle on low just to get some of the wrinkles out before I hang them up to dry. Not a fan. My old Maytag worked so much better. My old dryer was a Whirlpool and that outperformed this $1,000 Maytag Bravos 900 series...I wish I could get my money back.

I am at my wits end with this machine. I have had two repairmen out - both tell me its my fault that the dark clothes have white stuff on them at the end of the wash. Jerks.

I have tried three different HE detergents and using a tablespoon or two as they suggested. Clothes are wrinkled but I can deal with that but not the white film. I even tried washing them inside-out, helps but still there.

I will try what an earlier commenter said, try to trick it into using more water by using the bulky cycle.

Very disappointing
by: Lynn

Very disappointed in this washer. It does save water but not enough to outweigh the issues. I've had it for about 18 months and I agree with what many other people said about the clothes being very wrinkled. Sheets are almost tied in knots, even when washed on the special "sheets" cycle. The gentle cycle is a joke-there are deodorant stains and many times clothes aren't even wet through. I have to swish the items around by hand to feel like they are getting washed at all. Now there are grease spots on my clothes after washing. The Maytag site says this requires a repair man. My guess is it will be cheaper to get a new washer than have this one fixed.

MAYTAG Bravos 300 Series Piece of Junk
by: Holly

I also bought a Bravos 300 Quiet Series Washer and Dryer Set. What a joke!!! I will NEVER again buy anything with a label MAYTAG. We all need to stick together and tell everyone we know not to support MAYTAG. The washing machine does not clean clothes, it wrinkles everything up in one big wrinkled ball, hair and lint clings to the clothes and it gets off balanced. As for my quiet dryer I now have to listen to a high pitch whinning noice everytime I turn it on. So much for the quiet series. I bought this set one and half years ago and have had nothing but problems and service bills!!! By the way I called Maytag and asked them if they have had any recalls or complaints on this dryer? She replied "No we haven't had any complaints/recalls about this dryer" Obviously they haven't been listening to their customers!!

Maytag Bravo
by: Anonymous

I bought a Maytag Bravo after I read great reviews from Consumer Reports. It is a nightmare ! I have the clear top so I can see wash being washed and the cloths on top most times are dry while its washing. I have to wash several times and I always use extra rinse. Clothing comes out with stains , dog hair still on cloths and husband gym cloths smell after wash. Now I have a horrible smell coming from machine and into clothing. I have used affresh, bleach, tide product through cleaning cycle of machine . I keep lid open, never keep clothing laying in tub . I called Maytag and they gave zero help on how to solve sickning smell. I do not feel it is healthy to be exposed to this smell or wear clothing after washing in machine. I am going to buy a older type machine that fills up with water that I will only have to wash once. It is a hardship to have to go out and purchase another washer since I only have this for 11 months.

by: Sue Delgado

I also purchased my Bravos at Home Depot and was told I would get a refund from Maytag,,,NOT! I sent in the paper work only to receive a letter from Maytag months later saying that the promotion was no longer in effect.
I have only had these machines for about two years and it constantly goes off balance and stops in the middle of washing a load, and when it does complete the cycle the clothes come out a twisted mess. I sincerely regret buying this machine and would not recommend it to anyone. It also sounds like a Jet taking off for the entire spin cycle - much louder than my older Whirlpool washer was.
It is a beautiful, black hunk of junk and a waste of money!

Bravos Not a Quality Product

I bought my machine September 2009....

Some of the settings, like Bulky work.

My husbands clothes do not come out clean, deoderant stains do not come out of his shirts. Now washing all clothes on bluky to get them clean.

Blankets twist up and cause the machine to error.

Now getting error code F-36. Maytag says I should have bought the extended warranty. Machine is less than 2 years old and cost a small fortune. To fix will cost $400.00 ot $700.00.

Will get rid of this machine, tell all my friends to stay away from Maytag as they are now rip-off artist.

Will replace with simpler GE machine.

DO NOT BUY MAYTAG. NO LONGER A QUALITY PRODUCT. THEY DO NOT CARE YOU SPENT LOTS OF MONEY FOR THEIR PRODUCT.

Bravo Maytag Washer
by: anonymous

I only gave this a 1 star because I had to,it should be a negative 10!!! It doesn't get the clothes clean, my exercise clothes still come out smelling sweaty. We have lid lock problems. The washer half the time doesn't drain and the other half the time won't spin. Sometimes we have to totally unplug the machine to get it to work properly but by doing that it has to start the load all over again. In the last month it's begun sounding like a jet plane taking off during the spin cycle. We didn't purchase an extended warranty and every review we have read where someone bought one said it didn't cover the issues. We spoke with a repairman and he told us the things he thought it might take to fix it and it was more money than we spent on our EXPENSIVE washer to begin with. It's a no win and I will never by another energy-effiecient washer again! (Same advice that the repairman gave me.)

Maytag/Whirlpool SUCKS
by: Anonymous

Boy I wish I found this sight when I was researching a new washer --- Had a super capacity heavy duty Whirlpool for 15 years and the pump was going so I decided that I deserved a new washer so off I went to the appliance store and the sales people were so nice and positive about the Bravos so I just purchased a Bravos 700 series -- have washed about 12 loads ( the same 3 loads 4 times !!!) and finally I think they have all been cleaned -- worn out but finally clean. Was suspicious after the first load didn't "rotate" to the bottom and didn't even get completely wet, but thought it was the way I loaded it...so I loaded it differently - leaving the hole in the middle -- still the same thing - top layer didn't see the bottom, but the bottom layer sure was beat into cleanliness. flipped the load over so the top got the same treatment -- but the water was too cold so the soap didn't disolve, so I had to do it again....same thing for the next 3 loads -- called the service tech to come out and see if it was me or the washer -- apparently we are both doing what we are supposed to do... I was loading it correctly and the washer was performing within normal specifications according to the technician....but 4 times up and down the stairs for each load...4 times the water and energy consumption...sure doesn't seem very energy efficient, not to mention time saving !!!! but the towels were almost dry enough to use -- very wrinkled but very dry. so maybe the energy saving is in the drying time !!!! Now I am just waiting to see what my last load looks like to see if it needs round 4 too..... I will post what I find when I open the lid....

Hmmmm... seems I am in the minority, or my machine is a different design.
by: Anonymous

I bought a Bravos set from a scratch and dent place. I love them. My husband is terrible about overloading a washer, so it's great that he can throw about three times the laundry in and it still works.

Fours stars because I can't dye stuff in it, and I would prefer a few more options for washing, but it works great. I don't use HE detergent, just regular, cheap Sun brand, and the occasional fabric softener.

I see a lot of complaints about torn up clothing, but that hasn't been a problem. I've washed frayed shop rags and they were fine. The hand-wash cycle works well. I dunno... no overly-wrinkled clothes, either. I like the steam option hook-up on the dryer but I only use it when I have to take something out of the closet or folded from a drawer and I want it just fresher.

Maybe the design has changed; mine is from 2007, I think. I just got an F1 code today, which is how I found this forum.

Great Machine
by: Mrs. T

We purchased the Bravos washer and dryer 11 days ago. I've run about 20 loads and love everything about this washer.

Sometimes my jeans get a bit twisted, but not more so than in my old traditional agitator washer. They come out of the dryer just fine.

I've even tested the cleaning ability by staining a shirt with BBQ sauce and another with an oil-based salad dressing. Both came out clean on the normal cycle using the normal amount of HE detergent. I admit it is a bit odd to see it work with so little water, but it does!

Not sure where people are purchasing their HE detergent, but it should not cost more than regular detergent. I buy mine at Target and Kroger and it's the same price as regular detergent.

I did wash a couple of old towels with ragged edges (and loose threads), which got a bit beat up in the washer, but I guess that is to be expected when washing something with rips in it already.

Make yourselves happy, Save up your money and just buy a different machine. It this case it is good to just cut your losses. You will never see the $1,000 + that you spent on the Bravos, but you will save in destroyed clothes.

We are still trying to figure out what to do with this decommissioned Bravos in my garage. It's like a vicious dog. You don't want it in your home but you really don't want to give it away and take the blame for what it might do.

MAYTAG BRAVOS HOME DEPOT RIP OFF
by: Anonymous

I bought the Maytag Bravos machine a year ago, and it is the WORSE washing machine I have ever had. All of the dirt and grime gets behind the lid with no way to fix it and all inside of the ringers in the tub, which you have to hand clean after every wash. The FI error beep goes off every load....I have tried everything to fix it, but its obviously a fluke. The clothes are always very wet after spinning. You ahve to dry them twice. I tried to return the machine to BEST BUY the next day after purchase but they refused and were extremely rude. I can assure oyu that I will never purchase any other appliances from HOME DEPOT, as They DO NOT stand behind what they sell.

Worst mistake ever! Having washed 3 loads my clohes were coming out better in my old machine!
This machine uses so little water, clothes are coming out still dirty. What is worse is that the clothes are sooooo wrinkled it's ridiculous. Jeans are wrung so tight and knotted that even after adding fabric softner, using dryer sheets, trying low spin cycle nothing helps..It is going back to store tomorrow. These machines are soo expensive and not worth the money. Will go back to an old fashioned machine with an agitator.

high cost and bad results
by: R. Owens

This machine, contrary to all of the glowing comments I've read on this site, is positively useless as a washing machine. The person who tried to re-invent washing machine technology, by designing this abomination, should be doing some other type of work. It doesn't clean the clothes, no matter which cycle is chosen. Whites, cannot be cleaned, under any circumstances. Copious amounts of bleach, have no affect on their outcome. The minor agitation action, accomplished by the very abreviated agitator, is probably the largest contributor to the utter failure of its design. If you have to work hard for your money, or need to get great results from an expensive washing machine, you'd probably be money ahead by avoiding this brand/model altogether and do some research on other brands. There is absolutely nothing positive about this machine to recommend it. Its looks, belie its utter failure as a valuable addition to your compliment of household appliances. I'm desperate to replace it, because I really get angry, everytime I think about its high cost and the pathetic results it produces.

For the last 45 years I have owned and LOVED my other 2 older machines. The only reason I replaced them is that the tubs rusted out.

I consider myself very energy considerate so I purchased one of these new machines. Paid $1000.00 for it. The HE detergent costs double. You have to purchase special "washing machine cleaners" to "WASH THE MACHINE" - cost $8.00-$10.00 for 3 tablets. Because it has a stainless steel tub I have to buy non chlorinade bleach.... So where is they savings???

When the water drains the water looks slimmy. Leaving a film in the wash basin.

I have called the company on several occasions to complain... their answers is always that it's very energy efficient. They sent a repair man down -- he says it working like it's supposed to.

I have stood and watched the clothes being washed????
The only water you see is when it sprays the clothes from the top. You do NOT see any water in the machine. I have watched my rugs being washed??? how can they be washed if they can't submerge into the water -- the machine moves back but the rugs never moved further into the tub - they came out dingy.

Once spined out the clothes are so mangled you are forced to put them into the dryer or have to iron them. Yes, I use the low dry cycle.

I often dye clothing and wash my plastic shower curtains in the machine... you can't do this in the these machine.

F1 Error Code being Fixed at No Charge
by: Anonymous

I too have the F1 error code on my washer machine everytime I try to run a load - we've only had the machine for 1 1/2 yrs.

I emailed Maytag and they said they were aware of the problem and scheduled a service repairman to the house at no charge.

I will update this post after the 19th to see what it was they fixed.

So far, I am impressed that they took responsibility for the problem.

Twists and Wrinkles Clothes
by: Anonymous

I hate how this machine wrinkles the clothes. Sheets end up in a huge knot. Everything, even t-shirts, have to be ironed. I don't recommend it.

Wrinkles
by: RMc

I had a front loader and the problem was mold and mildew. Did heavy research for the Maytag Bravo. great machine for washing but I can not believe how much more work this machine has given me. I now have to Iron and I hate to Iron. Does not matter when you take the clothes out I always have to iron shirts I never had to iron before. Another problem, I can not seem to find the tablets that you are suppose to use for the cleaning cycle. Did I tell you "I HATE TO IRON". If you hate to iron don't buy this machine. Wish I had the maytag repair man coming to my house to iron!!

Bells, whistles & dirty clothes.
by: Anonymous

If you are mesmerized by bells and whistles, buy it.

If you like clean clothes that survive the wash cycle, buy something else.

All our clothes are becoming a gray dingy color and many have been discarded after a wash due to the destructive nature of this machine.

great customer service
by: Jenny

pros
- Larger loads of laundry
- Fast and efficient
- Very quiet

Cons
- Pants will knot up.

I started washing my jeans completely seperate from any other clothes and shaking them out after the washer and it seems to work. I don't think this is a typical problem, but I had an F1 error code start showing up just after a year of having them.

It was an annoying problem to have. It would stop and I would have to restart (4-6 times) in the middle of a cycle. Come to find out it was a control board problem. After calling maytag, they were at my house the next day and replaced the part for free. So the product for me... good.. then bad.. then back to good.

One great thing about maytag you can rely on customer service and taking care of their problems.

Wrinkles the clothes
by: Freyda

I really did my homework before I purchased my new washer (and I even read the whole manual before using it once I did buy it).

I agonized over all the choices and types and finally chose the Maytag Bravo. I opted against a front loader because I read so much about the noise, vibration and issue with mold/mildew.

The Bravo does have lots of wonderful features - the delay feature, extra rinse cycle, oxy clean cycle and more. The clothes are coming out clean. It's just huge - I can fit a gigantic load of laundry in, far larger than my old traditional washer.

I've been using the machine pretty much daily for the past month and I really like it, but I have one big complaint: the clothes are coming out REALLY wrinkled, and staying that way even after going through the dryer.

I'm loading the washer according to the directions (sort of plopping in clumps rather than wrapped around) but still, big time wrinkles. It does have a wrinkle guard setting, which does help a bit, but wow, I've never seen such wrinkled pants.

So, overall: great washer if you like ironing.

This machine is a piece of junk
by: Anonymous

I hate this machine. I was told what a wonderful washer it was. It does large loads, saves water and energy. It would be a great help for a mother of 8 children. This machine twists the clothes so much that it is difficult to get the wrinkles out. I have used fabric softener for every load but it doesn't do any good.

Many of the clothes now have to be ironed because they cannot be worn in such a wrinkled state. I have to run to my washer as soon as the buzzer goes off to let me know the load is done. Then I shake the clothes out trying to get some of the wrinkling out. If you left the clothes in the machine for any length of time they would be even worse. I spent extra money because it would help me with all my laundry.

This machine has made it worse. I am shocked that a good company would put such a piece of junk on the market.

Higher price for higher quality
by: Kelly

My husband got me the Maytag Bravos washer and dryer for Christmas. Boy, what a godsend! I'll admit it, I'm a tech freak, a geek, a nerd, what-have-you, so I fell in love with this washing machine. It has so many settings! It doesn't let its settings get in the way of it's sleekness, however, which sometimes happens with poorly planned devices.

Every time you open the lid you are greeted with easy-to-love musical tones, and a different tone when you shut it down. I was amazed that the designers payed attention to such a small detail like that.

The washer, despite all these features, is actually quite easy to use. Each corner of the machine allows for your product of choice – bleach, detergent, fabric softener, and Oxy Clean. That's simple enough, right?

As for the settings themselves, they covered all the bases, AND they are highly customizable. The machine can do bulky items for you, whites, delicates, and more. You can change the temperature, how fast the spin cycle goes, whether you want extra cleaning agents or fabric softener.

Another nice setting is the Clean Boost setting, which will maintain a constant temperature during the wash to help clean things better. There's also an extra rinse feature you can turn on. Another amazing setting makes the washing machine clean itself! Imagine that!

All in all, the Maytag washer is sleek, well designed, has tons of functions, and is easy to use. I love it, my husband loves it, and I get so many comments from friends and guests about how nice my washer looks.

About the only downside is price, but isn't it always? At least in this situation, though, it's well worth the money. You may be paying a higher price, but you are getting a higher quality product.
