LG Tromm Front Load Steam Washer

by Rachael
(Brighton, CO USAA)

My husband and I purchased our LG front loading washing machine from Best Buy about four years ago. It was a steal at the time--we paid around $900 for the washer since it was an open box, but it still came with all of the manufacturer warranties, instruction manual, etc.

It has been a dream come true for the most part. It operates extremely quietly, and is energy star efficient, using only a couple gallons of water per wash load. It has a lot of different settings, including a delay wash, extra rinse, heavy wash, and even hand wash, all at one-button touch operation.

The only issue with the one touch operation is that my youngest child, who will be two this week, likes to walk up to the machine and press buttons. It does have a "child lock" button on it, so when you press it and hold it down, it locks the buttons from being operated: with the exception of the power button. I am often halfway through a load of wash when my baby walks up to the machine and turns it off, and that gets frustrating.

Other than that, it does a fantastic job. I use less detergent in the wash, and clean water is constantly being added into the wash cycle, while dirty water is drained out. To me, it is far superior to a top-load washing machine where clothes "stew" in dirty wash water for up to an hour before they are rinsed out.

The inside drum is stainless steel, so it doesn't corrode or mildew. The rubber seal around the door does seem to get a little bit of that mildew smell, but is easily remedied by either leaving the door open after a wash cycle for things to effectively dry out, or by running a cycle of whites with bleach every few days.

I constantly rave about my washing machine, and I recommend it to just about anybody in the market to purchase a new machine. It operates so quietly that most times I forget it is even on, which makes it great for just about any home.

got some issues with it
by: Anonymous

I hate to be a downer when it sounds like most people have great luck with Lg but my very expensive washer has been a big let down. This is my first front load washer and the most expensive one I ever thought about buying. We do a LOT of laundry and this machine has had issues since a month or so after we purchased it. There seems to be a lot of error codes that we have to keep going online to research. Today after 3 days of my washer flashing error codes we saw the best thing to do according to a web forum was to unplug the machine for 2 hours and then try again. I am not sure if that will work but I just put in the first load after trying the 2 hour thing.

The next issue is that this is a water saving model which I thought was really nice but now I feel my clothes do not come out as clean as they did with my old washer and they do not smell as fresh either. There is a pull out tray where you place your detergent and the one in our machine has turned a nasty black color where it use to be gray when we first bought the machine.

It almost looks like mold but I have scrubbed and it does not come off???? If your floor is not totally level you will have issues with the machine shacking and walking across your floor too. And be very careful not to add even a tiny bit of extra detergent it will bubble up and run down the front of the washer and this leaves streaks on our black model that do not want to come off....Out of 5 stars I would be pressed to give it a 3.

The dryer that matches this machine on the other hand has done great...not a single problem except the lint screen is kind of fragile. The link screen on ours had a small hole the first month from a small rock that had gotten in the clothes some how and ended up in the dryer.

The dryer works fast and is very well worth every dollar we paid for it. The pair set us back with pedestals around 1,600 I think and I would buy the dryer again but not the washer....hope this saves someone else from the same problems we have been faced with.

Wouldn't trade it in for the world
by: Anonymous

I may be the least picky guy in the world: I just want my appliances to last forever. And my wife may be the pickiest - they have to be the very best quality.

We both got what we wanted with our LG Tromm Front Loader. It cleans our clothes like magic - getting stains off the 7 year olds jeans with ease. And it saves us money - the first month I noticed a $25 drop in my electricity bill (we do two loads a day of clothes, more in the summer!).

One of the strange side benefits was that the washer spins a lot of the water out which means the dryer is faster. This means less electricity to heat the clothes, less wear due to less spin time and lower heat, and less heat in the laundry room (which means less strain on the air conditioning). It's a trifecta!

I would caution other people, like me, with older homes, especially if you're on a wood joist floor, to take the time to level the washer because otherwise you're doing the magic finger thing to your whole house.

We've had them for a year and wouldn't trade them for the world.

Best washer I've ever had
by: Julie Henderson

We moved into a new home in March 2008 and needed to purchase a new washer and dryer for our laundry room. We did a lot of research on the internet to determine which washing machines were highly rated by the people who had them. I knew that I wanted a front load washing machine and I also needed one that was low on water usage since we are on a septic system.

This is the first time I've lived in a home with septic, so I was concerned about purchasing the right washing machine for the job. The LG Tromm was always highly rated by consumers who purchased it, but I kept reading about people who had problems with a strange odor coming from the washer after the first few months of use.

I decided to go with the LG Tromm in spite of the odor concerns because I figured I could just make sure to keep the rubber seal very clean (and dry) to avoid experiencing the same issues myself. We shopped at several different stores to get the best price.

This is not an inexpensive washing machine, but I believe you get what you pay for with these products. We ultimately ended up buying it at Conn's because we were able to negotiate the price with them to get a better deal that the advertised sale price. I would imagine that you can negotiate even more now given the economy. We had the washing machine delivered to our house and installed by Conn's.

They did a really good job. We've had the washing machine for nearly a year now and I absolutely love it. It's the best washer I've ever had.

We leave the washer door open for a few hours after each load to ensure that the rubber seal gets really dry before the door is closed. This helps prevent any mold from growing on the inside of the rubber seal. As a result, we haven't had any problems with odor at all.

This washing machine is a dream come true. It uses very little water so you save on water bills and feel good about not wasting water. The clothes all look great. I think you would be happy with this washing machine.

Go LG !!!!!
by: Erick Collins

I have had this washer machine for about two years now. The technology of this washer is amazing, there is so many functions on it I have not used them all. I also have the matching dryer with it which is equally impressive.

It is a front load washer machine with digital readout of wash time and easy to use interface which takes the scary technology feel out of this washer machine.

If you are like me and dont know the different cycles to well you can simply load the washer, put some HE only detergent in (do not use regualr soap in a front load) and push play! It is seriously that simple and washing clothes hasnt been easier.

It also has the other functions that a washer more savy than I can use such as the basic wash functions and even a customizeable wash.

Like I said above I have had this unit for two years and have not had a lick of problems even with 6 other people using it in my house! I also sleep against the wall adjacent to this machine and am yet to be woken up by its wash cycle or even spin cycle which is usually loud with other machines.

Over all this machine is worth every penny and I would seriously never buy another companies washer again.

Efficient and durable - very pleased
by: Anonymous

The LG Tromm Ultra Capacity front loader is an excellent, contemporary, stylish, and energy efficient washer. I have owned this machine since August 2007 when I purchased it and installed it in my condo apartment so I have now used it for 15 months. My wife and I have been extremely pleased with the machine's durability, quietness, and cleaning power. We have a young toddler who generates a few loads of clothes and sheet s a few times per week. This machine is highly suitable for a busy family with young kids.

The machine is quite stylish – our model is in stainless steel, and features the very large porthole glass door in the front loader which enables you to see your clothes as they are being washed. Our two year old son actually loves watching the clothes go around as the washer operates!

The LG Tromm features a purely digital control pad – there are none of the old fashioned mechanical turn knobs which click and which are subject to mechanical breakdown as the machine ages.

An optional 15 inch high pedestal storage system raises the profile of the washing machine such that the front loader door is at about an adult’s height, thus you do not have to hunch over to load the machine, which had been one criticism of front loaders versus top loaders. The machine is highly efficient as it is specially designed to use only high efficiency (HE) detergents, such as Tide HE. Thus, the machine uses less water than older or more traditional models.

An important feature of the LG Tromm is that it is a front-loader and that it does not have an agitator in the middle of the machine. Agitator style machines – which are common in top loader models – introduce much more physical contact and pressure on your clothes which results in the clothes being worn down much more quickly by the machine.

A machine without an agitator does less damage to your clothes and they last longer. The machine offers 7 major cycles plus myriad adjustments to these major cycles.

The digital display allows you to program in significantly greater information than mechanical knows would allow. While the South Korean manufacturer LG has been selling washers in the United States for significantly less time than Maytag (which I have also used), the LG product is excellent and I highly recommend it.

just love it
by: Rachael

I LOVE my LG front loading washing machine. It has a larger capacity than a traditional agitator top-loading washing machine, and is constantly putting fresh water into the machine so my clothes aren't "marinating" in dirty water.

It is the best investment I have ever made. I purchased it three years ago at Best Buy for around $1800, and have never once regretted spending such a large amount of money on an appliance. I have a family of four people, including my husband, myself, and my two kids, so we go through a lot of laundry.

Even still, I only have to wash clothes every other day since the machine has such a large capacity. It is energy efficient, and whisper quiet to operate. It offers dozens of different wash options, with pre-wash and extra rinse options as well.

The detergent, liquid softener, bleach, and pre-wash liquid all get loaded into a compartment in the top left of the machine before I start washing, which saves me from forgetting to add the fabric softener during the final rinse.

My ONLY complaint about the washing machine is the position of the buttons to operate the machine. They are on the front of the machine near the top. Although there is a "child lock" to prevent buttons from being pressed, the child lock feature can be overridden by turning the machine off, even mid-cycle.

My youngest son has curious hands, and a fascination with the washing machine, so he is constantly turning off the machine while it is running, forcing me to start the whole cycle over again.

Other than that, I love the washing machine, and I would highly recommend it to anybody in the market to purchase a new washer.

Cute red color and quiet
by: Anonymous

I am really impressed with how quietly the machine runs. I was also able to get it in a really cute red color that compliments my decoration in my laundry room. I also like how it loads in the front, I really don't like having to reach into a top loading washer and yank all my clothing out, so this washer's front load is really helpful. I also have the pedestals that come with it and it keeps it up off the ground and I can store things in it...so handy!

The buttons on the washer, at first glance are really confusing looking, but once I started using the washer I was able to understand it, and I don't have any problems like I had anticipated that I would have.

in love with it
by: Anonymous

I am in love!...with my washing machine. I grew up with top loaders, and I purchased top loaders all of my life, until about a year ago. I noticed that front loading washers were everywhere, they were all the rage. So, in an effort to “keep up with the ‘Jones’” I went out and purchased the LG washer and dryer set in cherry red.

WOW, is there anything that this washer can’t do? It steam cleans, it has a memory function to remember my settings, it has a cycle for just about every type of scenario imaginable, and I have used them all! From wrinkle care, to delicates, to steam to permanent press with an extra rinse cycle, this is easily the most versatile and customizable appliance I have ever owned. It has quickly taken the #1 place in my heart because I no longer loathe washday, mostly because I can’t get over how cool my LG washer is. Not only does it look positively awesome, I’ve seen a 15% decrease in my water bill, so it lives up to being much more energy efficient and water saving.

Expensive but worth it
by: Anonymous

I have loved this washing machine from the day that I got it. If I could give it a star rating it would be a 5 out of 5.

The buttons on the washing machine are so easy to use. The software is clean and streamlined. There are only a few but they all have a unique purpose. The spinning wheel that selects the mode move easily between modes and just makes sense. You do not need an instruction manual to run this washer it just makes perfect sense.

I love how the washing machine's trays are set up. They work very well. There is a try for absolutely everything, pre-wash, bleach, main wash etc.

The way the washing machine beeps is great. It has a happy tune. It's not like other washers with that annoying buzz.

Another great feature of this washer is the steam cleaning. If your clothes only need "refreshing" like there is a shirt that you have worn in the morning and it maybe smells a little bit or has become really wrinkled you can stick it in for 20 minutes and it is refreshed for the night time.

This washer has one thing that I do not like about though. One time I put int on pause for like 20 minutes and it reset. I do not see why it did not stay on pause for 20 minutes.

The drum is very very quiet. One time the wash was going and the only way I knew was my shower was cold. It is very quiet yet spins at a very high speed. When my clothes come out of the wash they seem to be almost dry. The dryer is left with little work to do. I have had this washer for almost a year and it still does not make any noise whatsoever.

Nothing has gone wrong with this washer as far as I can tell. It is still as shiny as the day that I got it and work the same, great.

It may be a little bit more expensive than other washers but it is totally worth the expense for the steam cleaning abilities, large capacity, and all the other great feature of this washer.

put the baby in with the clothes. This should cure him from messing with the button.
