Kenmore 400 Top Load Washer

Product Overview

The Kenmore 400 is towards the bottom of the Kenmore range of washing machines, and has a capacity of 3.2cu ft, which is equal to washing 14 bath towel (based on approximately 24in by 44in).

It has a dual action agitator and uses 28% less water and 40% less energy (based on using the normal cycle and compared to a conventional machine built before 2004), meaning that it will both save you money and cut your impact on the environment.

It is available only in white, and the unit has an overall depth of 26in and is 27in wide, with a maximum height of 43 1/8 in. There is also a Kenmore 400 dryer and many people them as a combination.

This washing machine is ideal for smaller households, and works through small loads quickly using the Express Wash feature. It has Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) so that it can deliver reliable, consistent cleaning.

There are 4 water level settings and, with Automatic Temperature Control, 4 temperature settings. It has a bleach dispenser which allows you to safely add bleach to the wash. While it does not have many additional features it does have ergonomic, soft touch controls that don’t slip when wet, and an end of cycle signal. Users report that the machine gives great results time and time again.

Final Thought

As with other Kenmore washing machines, the 400 is designed for reliability and long life, having the option of a white porcelain wash basket that is intended to resist scratches and minimize odors. It comes with a load balancer and has leveling legs so that it can be installed in a position to minimize vibration when it spins, which will help to prolong its working life.

Even though it is more energy and water efficient than previous washing machines the Kenmore 400 is not Energy Star compliant. It does not have noise reduction features, and while users report that it is not particularly quiet, they are also satisfied that it is not exceptionally noisy.

This is a budget washing machine and does not come with many of the features associated with more expensive models, such as special cycles for hand wash, silk or wool, although there are two delicates cycles. There are no delay wash or pre-wash settings, and it lacks convenience features such as ‘add a garment’, cycle status lights or an estimated running time delay.

The Kenmore 400 is practical washing machine designed with smaller households in mind. If you are running on a tight budget and you are looking for a washing machine that gets the job done, that is reliable, and if you don’t need advanced features, you should take a serious look at the Kenmore 400.

There are plenty of very satisfied users of this machine because it’s inexpensive and gets the laundry done to a high standard – which is what you want.

Pros
• Great for smaller households

• Works through small loads quickly

• good for those on a budget

Cons
• Lacks advanced features

• Noisy

• Poor spin cycle

• Some reports of unreliablity

Great Product!
by: Anonymous

My family and I have had this washer for four years, and it has never failed us once. We are about to move, so we're constantly doing laundry, but it has never given out on us. It is a bit noisy, but not enough to bother anyone in my home. It also runs very fast, yet gets the job done. Being able to change the water level certainly helps on our bills. I would definitely recommend this washer to anyone on a budget that needs a great washer.

Kenmore 400 Top Loader Nightmare
by: Anonymous

I bought the Kenmoe 400 top loader about three years ago and everything was fine, now every time I wash my laundry it leaves a ton of lint on my clothes, making it impossible to wear certain garments because the lint seem to be attached to the fabric. Upon calling sears their response was that it would cost $60.00 for a tech to come out a take a look at their product and does not even cover the cost to rectify the lint problem. Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean the lint trap in the Kenmore 400. Please any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It literally STINKS !
by: Lyn

We bought this machine in 2006. We have really not been pleased with it at all. Oh, it gets the clothes clean enough, but we have been fighting an ODOR problem for pretty well the whole time. This machine does not have to work that hard - we are an older couple ! We took the agitator out, to clean underneath, but to no avail. We have spent a fortune on different cleaners that you put thru the machine, to no avail. We're on septic tank, so can't over do the bleach to clean it out, but did try it, & it worked until the next wash. We've talked to Sears, their reps, & their techies. They all recommend some other "better" cleaner. I think they're all in cahoots ! We've had a variety of washers throughout our long married life, and have NEVER had a problem like this - so it's not us ! I also find that the "warm" wash is closer to cold. We experienced another problem with a Sears brand over the last five years or so, with no recourse. This will be the last Sears ANYTHING we buy.

Worst washer ever
by: Anonymous

This is the worst design for a washer I have seen. First of all in order to start, it has to lock the lid, meaning you can not open the lid at anytime during the cycle, unless you press the button and wait for the computer to let you in (suposed to be 3 seconds, seems longer).

It takes longer to wash a load than any washer I've used. I set my timer up stairs for 60 minutes and sometimes it's still not finished. This computerized balance feature adds time...time I don't have to waste waiting for the brain to open the door when the load is finished.

Who ever thought up this design must not wash their own clothes. I don't think it even deserves one star.

My mother's washer ran for 20 years, and you could open the lid whenever you felt a need. I want to control my machine, not be at the mercy of some pea brain computer.

DO NOT BUY KENMORE OR SHOP AT SEARS!
by: Anonymous

Our Kenmore washer broke after 3 years. After less than a year it kept getting off cycle. We called and they taught us how to reset the machine. Now, the washer will not reset and we can't do laundry because it will not drain. I guess our warranty expired after 2.5 years (which seems odd to me, but that's what they told us), and neither Sears nor Kenmore will help us fix it or get a discount on a new washer. Our last washer was nearly 25 years old when it died, so 3 years was a huge disappointment.

Great washing machine!
by: Chris

I've had this washing machine for about 2.5 years now & never had a problem. I live with a lot of roommates & we're constantly doing laundry. Especially being in the military it has to take some pretty dirty things but yet it still gets everything out & definitely does it's job. Even though we're always running it, it's still going strong. Everything always comes out clean & fresh. I would absolutely buy another & recommend this to others.

problem with kenmore 400 wash machine
by: Anonymous

After 12 months I'm considering purchasing a different brand. The water temperature cycles of the K400 fail to operate correctly and at times I fear the the water pipes in the house will break. The plumber checked the water pipes for air but after investigation stated the machine was the problem. If you're considering buying a new wash machine look to a different brand and one without such strict temperature water cycle controls (the Sears service agent that visited the house indicated the machine is designed with a special automatic control). A few dollars more will provide you with years of pleasure rather than problems..

not efficient for us
by: George Haney

We bought the washer about a year ago. We had a service rep out because the washer didnt spin the cloths very well. We were told that was to protect the threads in the material of the cloths. The cloths come out of the washer very wet. Not very energy efficent when you have to run the dryer for three hours.

worst machine ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I
by: Anonymous

I have had washing machines for over [50] years and this is the worse piece of junk ever! It is in a rental unit so I am stuck with it.It has beat my clothes up worse then years and years of wear. I end up filling the tub and use it like a laundry tub for my delicate things. The noise is so LOUD and vibrates the entire area. Spend an extra couple of dollars and buy something good. It is a disgrace to the SEARS name.

Great economy washer!
by: Anonymous

I've had this unit for almost three years now and its still going strong! It has different cycles and water levels to help cut down on water use and power drain. I lived with four other guys and occasionally their girlfriends, so that's a lot of laundry! But this unit has had no problems handling the large loads and the frequency of three to four times a week. This a good unit on the cheap and I would recomend it to anyone shopping on a budget and looking for a good machine that doesn't take up too much space!

"HOT" Not Truely Hot
by: JA

I have had a Kenmore 400 for about a year. One thing I didn't like about it is that the water temperature HOT is not truely hot. I have found an easy way to change it back to fully TAP HOT. I have written this up at the following webpage.

Good luck!

folly of cheap machines
by: Ray

I purchased this machine approx 1.5 years ago. Not saying it is a bad machine if you do not mind purchasing one every year or so. It gave no indication of having a problem until it instantly quit and cost more to repair then the original purchase price. Run away from cheap machines and purchase something that the dealer will warranty.

Good for those on a budget
by: Suzy

I have a Kenmore 400 top loading washer from Sears. The capacity is 3.2 cubic feet, which is certainly enough for two adults. I do laundry a couple of times a week, so I’ve never had a problem with not having enough room in the washer. Although they’re a bit tough to squeeze in because of their bulk, I’m able to clean heavy bed quilts and bulky drapes without any problems.

This is not a top-of-the-line washer. It’s a basic, economy model, and it only costs a little over $300, so you get what you pay for. However, since I don’t have kids in the house and am not washing clothes with embedded dirt, this unit works fine for me.

I did checking at major appliance stores and considered Whirlpool and Maytag machines, but in the end, bought the Kenmore because I really didn’t need all the bells and whistles that were on competitor’s machines or on some of the more expensive Kenmores. I considered getting a front-loading washer, but I didn’t think it warranted the higher prices. In addition, I have a friend who had this same machine and she is happy with it.

A few things to note about this Kenmore 400: It’s a bit noisy, but in all honesty, that doesn’t bother me too much (although it seems to drive my husband nuts). The machine also vibrates a bit quite a bit when on the spin cycle, but I think that is a problem with leveling the machine on the floor.

There are four water levels, from extra small to extra large loads, so you don’t waste water. There are also four settings for water temperature control, from tap cold to hot. I usually wash my clothes in warm water, so I rarely change that setting. There are also the usual settings you’d expect for wash cycles, including heavy duty and delicates. Each cycle has an “express mode” which launders your clothing in the shortest amount of time possible.

This machine is not Energy Star compliant, which is important to some people, but not to me. I was more interested in getting a basic washing machine at an affordable price and I think that is exactly what I did. I’m very happy with my Kenmore 400.

I don’t know if they are still selling this unit, but I’d recommend it to anyone considering a budget purchase that does what it’s supposed to do: clean my clothes! The Kenmore 400 top loading washer is nothing fancy, but does the job!

Rather spend more money on better product
by: Katye

We purchased our Kenmore 400 3.2 cu. ft. Capacity Top-Load Washer along with the matching Kenmore 400 5.9 cu. ft. Capacity Electric Dryer from Sears about five years ago. We had just purchased our home and the previous owners were taking their washer and dryer with them, so we had to purchase new.

Although our laundry room was a pretty large room, the space for the washer and dryer units was limited, so size became a big factor, along with price and capacity. We chose this combination because not only were they the perfect size, but they were in our budget as well. When we first purchased them, it was only my husband and I. We now have a toddler (thus increasing our laundry frequency), but these appliances are still going strong and do a wonderful job.

The washer has a white porcelain wash basket, which resists scratches and odors (another plus when you have a toddler), and can hold a large amount of clothing per wash. My only complaint is that although there is a bleach dispenser, it does not automatically add the bleach to the wash at the right time. You have to catch the washer at the right point in the wash cycle to add the bleach to the dispenser, making it a bit inconvenient.

The dryer has been a little less reliable than the washer. Although it has never stopped working, it can't handle the same kind of wash load that the washer can, leaving us having to run the dryer twice, sometimes three times in order to get all the clothes completely dry. When I have to do two loads of colors, one bleach load, a towel load, and a bed sheet load, this can take me two days to get it done, because of the time consumed by having to run the dryer twice.

I try to make the wash loads smaller in order to not over-work the dryer, but the majority of the time I still find the clothes a bit damp after one run through the dryer. For the price, no major complaints, but we'll probably spend a bit more the next time around to get a better product.
