Keep the dryer on a low setting

by Mary Lou
(Shreveport, Louisiana)

We usually focus on getting the clothes dried quickly and efficiently. This usually requires us to the heat up, which results in fading and wear-and-tear at a quicker rate. Instead, keep the drier at a low heat setting. The clothes still get dry, without shrinking, fading, and wearing out!

So True

Using a low setting is absolutely the best choice. My clothes have definitely had less fading since I made this my policy. My only problem is that the low setting on my dryer still seems too hot to me, especially for delicate fabrics. Often the clothes are almost too hot to touch. I'd like dryer manufacturers to bring it down a notch for a setting that's just warm, not really hot.

Never thought it was the heat

You made a good point about the intensity of the heat having to do with wear and tear of the fabric as it goes through the wash, i never thought about that, i always thought it was the detergent.

Lower Setting Probably Cheaper
by: Anonymous

Keeping your driyer on a lower setting is problaby wise, especially for what you mentioned about fabric life. I have kept my Dryer on delicate cycle for all of my clothing for several years now, and my jeans and pants and polos have lasted 3+ years. The only time I use high heat is when drying bath towels, sheet or other linens that we share or tend to hold germs. Your dryer's electricity consumption will prevail when running for a longer time at a cooler temperature as opposed to it running at a hotter temperature for a shorter period of time. Generally, your heating elements are what burn the most electricity, not the motor that turns the dryer.
