Haier HWD1000

by John Sinclair
(New York, NY)

The Haier HWD1000 Washer Dryer combination machine is my latest appliance purchase. It is an amazing piece of engineering. It combines efficiency with space saving design. In this review, I intend to tell you why I got the machine, how it works, and why I love it so much.

First of all, the Haier fits perfectly in my 450 square foot apartment in Brooklyn. I mounted it in a cabinet space in my kitchen. This is really convenient for me as I do not have a separate laundry room. The reasons I got the Haier are threefold. First it is compact, it has a very small footprint. Second the Haier washer dryer combo is extremely energy efficient, compared to side by side stand alone models. Third, the Haier is very quiet compared to other washer dryer combo models.

The actual workings of the machine are amazing. All you do is throw in the clothes and detergent and turn it on. The machine washes, rinses, spins and dries your clothes all in the same go. You do not have to switch anything around, all you do is take out the dry clothes when it is done. This is a definite step up in my opinion from regular washers and dryers. All of this and it is very stingy on water and electricity. So far my energy usage is down and I am saving money.

Now to the reasons why I like the Haier so much might be obvious, but the energy efficiency and the convenience are what really do it for me. I get so much more space in my small apartment since I do not have to dedicate a small room to the laundry. The Haier is not without its flaws however. I do wish it had a slightly larger capacity, so I could wash more clothes at one time. The sound it makes takes some getting used to as well. It is not necessarily louder than an equivalent separate dryer, it just has a higher pitch since the drum spins so fast. It almost sounds like a small jet plane taking off sometimes. Other than that, it is a wonderful machine.

All in all, I cannot recommend the Haier enough to someone in my situation. If you live in a small space, have a modest amount of clothes to wash and wish to do it with a minimum of fuss, the Haier is the perfect machine for you. I would absolutely purchase this machine again if I did it over again.

Hwd1000 lint overheating NEW
by: Mark

Ok. I replaced fan blower motor. No ec4 error. I did not let it go that far. Manifold too hot in my opinion. I shut it off and hung damp clothes. Ill try ripping apart all tubing at back for lint one of these days. Too bad not accessible unless pull apart entire machine. Shite design.

HWD1000 blower motor fan NEW
by: Mark

If you are replacing the motor you have to take off the weight block, then the manifold. Then and this is the tricky part you have to turn the compression nut clockwise to loosen off the fan. (not the other way)
The only other thing is as many others have suggested is to clean the condensation chamber and some tube at the back from because of lint buildup. I have not got to that point yet but probably other reason clothes would not dry in 2 hrs even before bearings went in fan motor. I plan on doing it before putting this all back together.

Worst purchase I have ever made. NEW
by: John Villani

My unit won't dry, got an error code, Lowes won't do anything, Haier just ignores my calls.

The unit is only 14 months old in my vacation home, it is only my wife and I and we are there only 3 months a year, go figure.

I hope someone reads this and won't waste money as many others have.......

Cold only takes up all my hot water? NEW
by: Anonymous

What a bizarre little machine. I put the washing machine on COLD ONLY, and the clothes come out STEAMING HOT. I've checked all the pipes, and this morning I actually ran out of hot water while taking a shower (yes, cold-only wash!).
Bizarre little machine.

Terrible
by: AnonymousCW

First off I'd like to see if WMW could foreward all these reviews to a lemon law lawyer?

I have the HW1000 and thought it would be great for my mobile home.
Its not even two years old and I've had it serviced 3 times now.
Its doing the E12 code and I called them, the guy said
something like now it was all drained it should work fine. (I opened the screw lent trap and it flooded my house) So I started it and the same thing happened.
So I called again.
A lady answered and said my drain pipe maybe too high. Willing to try anything I put it down in a 5 gallon bucket.
Even though it had been using sink draining for the whole time it drained out some murky water.
So now its supposed to be "Drying".
hardy, har har!
Basically these are poorly made and pieces of crap and they start going out right at the one year mark.
I bought mine from Living Direct and what asshole they were. I had told them I wanted my money back and return the unit.
They refused and hand you back to Haier.
Can we get a LEMON LAW lawyer!!!!

missing error
by: Anonymous

Thanks for you input. However the machine dosn't show an error, while its in the drying mode it appears to be working, however once it gets to the 10 min countdown, it dosn't ever move from that number. I'm assuming the 10 on the digital screen means minutes. I've not seen any ER code other than the 10

Not Drying
by: Anonymous

If its not drying and you have error code ER13. Then its one of these problems in this order. There are several reasons at it:
1. Thermal link is broken; 2.The connection between thermal link and wire is not suitable; 3. Sheathed
heating elements is broken; 4. The connection between sheathed heating elements and wire is not suitable;
5. Thermostat is broken; 6. The connection between thermostat and wire is not suitable; 7.PCB is broken.

Ive tested all of these except the PCB.. I guess its my last resort and hope it fixes it. Im disguested with this company (Haier) they are a disgrace.

HWD1000 Not Drying
by: Dan

I had a guy come over and said the reason the clothes are not getting 100% dry is because of the Themister, so I replaced it. However that didn't solve the issue, so i called another guy and he came over and said i need to replace all 3 boards (about $400), but wouldn't guarantee that would solve the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be something else? I've cleaned all the hoses, the button trap is free and clear?

Error code EC4
by: Anonymous

This machine performed beautifully for the first year, considering its size, not bad, it dries clothes just fine as long as you dont fill the drum beyond halfway. afterwards, I was noticing the dry cycle was taking progressively more and more time to dry, until it finally popped an EC4 code. at first I thought is was burned heater element, I downloaded the maintenance manual and followed the general directions to troubleshoot this code.. the manual never mentions the condensation chamber. I had discovered it was full of lint. part of the problem with this piece is its funny shape and limited access to the inner chamber, was almost completely full of lint. it took me about half an hour to remove the chamber, disconnecting and removing the counterweight on top, and the heater manifold, its drain connection and 3 nuts in the back near the temp probe. it took another 20 minutes with the kitchen sprayer and a coat hanger to extract the lint from the chamber. after re-assembly, the dry cycle ran like new. Aside from that, the machine runs like a champ, at 2~3 loads a day

One Possible Solution
by: Sharon

I was having the same drying problems - soaking wet even after drying - so started searching the internet for anything that could give me a clue to solving my problem. I found one thing that could be it; the dryer needs cold water to work (Probably in the manual). It reminded me that my washer hookups are mislabeled, hot is actually cold and visa-versa. After switching the hoses to their correct hookups I have found that, even though the clothes could use a little more drying at the end, they are nowhere near what I was having before. And as was stated here already, if I take them out and drape them over something they are dry within minutes. Still not what I would prefer of course, but I think I can live with that.

Piece of Crap, Useless Drier, Eats Clothing
by: Adam

Piece of crap. Seems like some people get good machines and others don't. Lousy customer service too, they see like they don't know what you're talking about and treat you like you have three heads and no brain. Takes forever to convince them to send a repairman. After one frustrating year, I'm about to call a repairman before my warranty is up and chuck the bloody thing over my balcony on top of him.

First of all, the bloody dryer is completely useless. At first I tried to figure out how to get my clothes actually dry, but it never works. The clothes come out somewhat drier, but no matter what, the clothes ALWAYS have to be hung dry after anyway. Even small loads don't make a damned difference. After the first month when the repairman told me that it's a European model and Europeans don't dry their clothes as much as North Americans, I've never attempted to use the dryer again and I just hang everything all the time.

Secondly, the f***ing door sometimes won't open, sometimes for up to three days. Nothing works...unplugging, resetting, rewashing, kicking, cursing or even trying to be nice. Just have to wait and see when the machine decides it's pissed you off enough and hope your clothes aren't mouldy. Had my work uniform in there once for a day and a half...not fun. Have had my uniform dry cleaned ever since that day since they told me they would fire me if I came to work naked again.

The only thing that seems to work is when you call customer service, and somehow the door always randomly opens when you're talking to the representative and they think they've helped you (the idiot) to figure it out. I suspect they just lock and unlock it remotely so that they can make you look dumb.

Finally, the button trap is bloody annoying as hell, except that there are more cool people in hell. Takes about a million to a million and a half attempts to get the thing screwed back in properly, and the only surefire way to test if it's in properly is to run a load and hope it doesn't make a small lake in your room.

If you need help Also to Beverly
by: repair service tech

Im a repair service tech in calif. and I been working on these combo units for over 3yrs now. If you need help or parts I can supply both. The most problem with them is the condensing tank that gets clogged with lent and will either keep your clothes from not drying because of no air being able to recirculate. Another reason why they dont dry depending on which unit you have is the misting valve putting to much water in the condensing tank which is there to collect the condensationand wash it out the pump.and when you have the 1000 model will give you the code 13 and thats thethe little senser thats in the back of the unit that pokes through the condesing tank when you pull the back panel off.( BEVERLY) You need a adapter that hooks up the unit to your faussit in your sink I that set up if you want it I can send it to you My email mcgarywayne65@yahoo.com or hotmail.com If anyone needs some anwsers to your questions email me and I will try to get back with you as soon as I can.

Problematic
by: Anonymous

I posted a few months earlier in September 2011 about how the machine works well, when it works. There are two problems with the machine. The first is the low capacity, but that is something that you can learn to live with. The second problem is the lack of a proper lint trap. Other than washing items that do not produce lint, there is no way to prevent the accumulation of lint within the machine. I found two places where the lint accumulates and there is no way that most people will be able to clean out the blockage since it requires some disassembly of the machine. Left in place, the wet lint blocks the warm air from circulating and clothes will take 3-5 hours to dry, instead of only two or less.

I think this type of washer-dryer combo machine is great, but just not the Haier HWD1000. If clothes aren't drying, find someone to open the back of the machine to clean out the tank. You can pull out the dryness sensor and plug and clean out the lint that accumulates around the sensor. The bottom hose on the tank might be clogged too. Chances are there's nothing wrong with your heating coil of thermostat.

Good Luck!

Some tips to think about
by: PlanoLink.com

The HWD 1000 washes 11 lbs. but only dries 4 lbs. So take the big stuff out & hang it or wash 4 lbs. Also dont put the water full blast, it might get on the floor & break parts. Haire has a good website with a lot of info. I'm getting one used tomorrow. Wish me luck! I did my home work on this one. (All the problems I see posted here seem to be loads too big & water presure too high)

Max Loads
Non-Fade Cottons 11 lbs.
Delicate 4.4 lbs.
Woolen 2.2 lbs
Blending fabrics 5.5 lbs.

works great, when it works
by: Anonymous

This works great when it's working, but there is a drain hose that can get clogged with lint which can eventually result in a near complete blockage of hot air circulation during the drying process. I think this is might be why a lot of people say that the machine won't dry. It will dry, but there is a small black hose on the back of the machine (coming from the clear tank) which needs to be unclogged.

Don't do it!
by: Anonymous

The Haier HWD1000 is a piece of crap, along with the worthless manual it comes with. 3 loads in, it threw an E11 error, so I called in my warranty. The first 3 repairmen never showed. FINALLY got a repairman to show up and he fixed it. Ran great for 5 loads and now refuses to dry my clothes beyond drenched. All in all, I have owned this machine for 2.5 months and it has actually worked for a little over a week and I have gotten 8 loads out of it. What a waste of money!!! I work for a property management company and deal with appliance vendors all of the time. One of those vendors told me to stay far far away from Haier products because they constantly have problems. I didn't listen and now I am paying for it. I would feel guilty selling it to someone else and can't afford to replace it. Should have spent more and gone for a nicer machine from the start.

won't work
by: Beverly

I cannot get my Haier HWD1000 to come on at all. The little digital windows light up so it's not the electric. The inside rubber in the doorway is all bubbled up. Is that supposed to be like that? There is a warning light that flashes and I looked in the manual and it says close door or something like that. Maybe I need to just pull out the rubber and replace it. I don't know what to do. Does anyone know who would work on these kind of units?

Horrible Service on a bad unit
by: James C

I bought a new Wash/dryer combo. It stopped drying, had service out they showed up wouldn't do anything because only one guy showed up, came a second time looked it over ordered a part but the thing started working, three weeks later got a survey call from the repair service company (local company for Cedar Rapids, IA) for the return service call that never happened. Called them back said that they never came, never heard from them again, nor did I ever hear from Haier. The part finally arrived after about 2 1/2 months. Dryer again stopped and is not working so I had to replace the sprayer myself. The dryer still doesn't work and now I'm told that I voided the warranty so no more repairs on it, even though the part I ended up replacing had nothing to do with what is wrong with the unit.

not so sure i like this......
by: Andrea

So i just moved into this apartment who just so happened had an Haier HWD1000 washer/dryer combo installed in it....i must say....not too satisified. Between my husband and i including a 2 year old baby...the dryer needs to be more capable. The manual is useless....after reading it 10 times your still left confused....and after going through the whole wash and dry cycle after 3 hours your clothes are still left damp and with a moldy smell to it, no matter how much detergent you use....i understand that this washer/dryer is not meant for large amounts of clothes, but if thats the case it takes forever to do all the laundry that needs to be done. I do not recommend it to anyone...yea it makes less noise but face the facts....it doesnt get the job done!!

Expensive and low performance
by: Donald Scott

This does save space but the space u save will just be take'n up by all the dirty laundry you will have laying around.Turn it on and wait it might be dry some time next week! If your lucky enuff to get it to spin all the water out before it goes in to the drying cycle. Good luck to anyone buying one really sounds great.......just wish it work as well. Great idea.........just a lot of money for very little peformance.

Not great at drying with large load
by: Anonymous

I have been using this washer/dryer combo for the past 8 months and find that it is a very useful and easy to use appliance. I really like the idea of having a washer/dryer combo built in to one unit.

It makes it convenient to be able to do washing and drying in one unit. There are times that I don’t feel like going to the on site laundry facility to do a full load of laundry and it makes it nice to have this unit in my apartment so that I can do small loads of laundry in the comfort and privacy of my own home.

The only draw back to this unit is that a lot of times, depending on the size of the load, the unit does not dry clothes very well. When this happens, I usually will put my clothes on hangers and let them air dry overnight.

I sometimes feel a bit awkward when I have to wash my clothes in a public place, and having this washer/dryer combo in the privacy of my home give me the comfort, privacy and security of being in my own home when I do my laundry, even though there those occasions where I still use the laundry room facility available on site in my apartment complex

Overall, I am very pleased with the idea of having a washer & dryer combined in one unit. It is one of the many added features of my current living environment that I enjoy.

Pros
- Compact
- Easy to use.

Cons
- Depending on size of load, clothes tend to come out damp after cycle has completed
- During the spin cycle the unit can create alot of noise.

Not pleased
by: Caitlin T

I bought a Haier HWD1000 Front Load Washer recently, and I have had nothing but problems since. It leaks constantly. The detergent drawer leaks. When you try to spin out your clothing, it leaves them soaking wet, which in turns costs more electricity to dry them.

I thought it was a great idea at first, but it just eventually became a costly mistake because immediately after buying it and hooking it up it would not run because the repairman claimed my water was on too high of pressure and cracked a part in the interior. So we had to wait for that part for nearly a month, and once that was installed, and less than three loads of clothes done, the motor completely went out.

That part was on backorder for nearly THREE MONTHS!!! All in all, this has been an eternal nightmare.

I would NOT recommend this machine at all, unless you are into headaches and nightmares! It also doesn’t really clean your clothes. Especially if you exercise and have some stinky gym clothes, you still smell the sweat in them after washing.

Not pleasant. My son uses cloth diapers… and we aren’t even going to go into how those turned out in the washer. REALLY not pleasant!

WELL WORTH IT
by: TSHFCE

I did a lot of research prior to purchasing a washer/dryer combo and even with what seemed like several bad reviews, I chose the Haier HWD1000.
I've had it three months and I'm a very heavy user and I think I've truly put it to the test and it's a champ. It cleans better than any machine I've ever had, it's very quiet and I have had none of the spin trembles or severe shaking and noise of which others have complained. My only complaint would be the manual. It's pretty worthless and I'm still trying to figure out how to set the various custom cycles. It does take a LONG LONG time to dry most things but I find that after on dry cycle the load is so hot that ten minutes hanging up and everything's dry. It is a machine well worth putting up with the minor glitches for the benefit of real convenience. I love mine.

Looks great and energy efficient
by: duvessa

My husband bought me this machine when we moved into our new mobile home. He said it would be more efficient because it was just one machine and it used less electricity than running two. I of course was skeptical because I did not believe that such a small machine could do so much for me. I thought that it was just a trick and he was going to buy me a dryer later.

Little did I know this amazing machine does everything I need and more. Not to mention it looks great and I have tons of space left in the house for all my other equipment I need. It holds a good size large load and it is front loading which I love to death, and it is energy efficient. Who could ask for more right? I know that I couldn't expect anymore out of this machine.

I have had it for about a year now and have not had to replace anything or had any problems with it whatsoever. There is no need to go to the laundry mat when I can just have this great all in one machine. I though it wouldn't dry well at all but it dries just like a commercial machine. Everything is bone dry by the time I come get it out of the machine. I just love it and I am very pleased with this product.

An amazing time saver
by: john

At first I was hesitant buying a combination washer and dryer. I mean how many times have I bought a television with a built in DVD player only to have the DVD player break but the television keep on working. That was my main worry. Well, need not worry about a situation like that on this machine. It is well built and working fine.

The space saving was my first motivation for purchasing this model. The individual washer and dryer models just take up to much room. Two machines also need two plugs. Now that I have the Haier combination I have room to put a bookshelf. The footprint of the missing dryer was about three feet by three feet with just one machine that space is now mine to do what I please with it. I needed the room for a bookshelf but that is a lot of space for many different uses. I was thinking of putting a bike hook in the ceiling and storing my bike in that new free space. The bookshelf won out in the end, but just having that extra space with a little imagination and the possibilities are endless.

After using the Haier, that is when I feel in love with this machine. The best part about this machine is not the space saving but the ease of use. Instead of washing my clothes in a washing machine and then moving the wet clothes to a dryer, I now just put the dirty clothes in one machine and leave. That's right. I put the dirty clothes in one machine turn it on and leave. No one has to be there to move wet clothes from one machine to the other.

It is an amazing time saver. Just put your dirty clothes in one machine and leave to run errands and come back to clean dry clothes. You will never have to put your clothes in one machine and wait around until it is done washing. I will never go back to a separate washing machine and dryer set-up ever again.

Thank you for a ventless dryer
by: justin

I have owned a lot of washers and dryers in my life. Normally it is a venting problem or something to do with a circuit board going bad. The Haier HWD1000 really caught my eye a year ago when I had moved in to a new apartment. There were no vent holes, so I thought that I was in a bit of a predicament.

I was at Sears shopping around for some appliances and decided that I might as well look for a washer and dryer. It must have just been my lucky day. Right on the corner was a Haier HWD1000 washer and dryer combo on a huge sale. It was normally over nine hundred dollars, but was on sale that day only for five hundred. The best part about it is that it came with a five year full warranty, so if anything did go wrong then I would be covered. I had never heard about that brand of dryer before so I was a bit skeptical about the whole idea. I bought it and transported it home. Much to my surprise it really is not that heavy. I have moved some really heavy machines before, but this one is much lighter.

The problem with not having a vent for the dryer was solved. The dryer was ventless. I do not know how they came up with this, but thank them for doing so. Otherwise I would have had to take a ten minute drive just to pay to do my laundry at the nearest laundry mat. That would have been a pain. The washer does use a lot of water, but not too much electricity. The dryer works well and has numerous chimes when the cycle is complete. The dryer takes about forty minutes to dry a normal sized load completely.

Overall this combo is well rated, but there are some down sides for how heavy duty they are.

It washes wonderfully
by: Shawn

I live in a two-bedroom apartment and need the convenience of washing clothes inside oft my home because I have three children under the age of five. My Husband and I decided that we should look for an apartment-sized washing machine or stackable unit.

The problem was that they were not ventless and we could not have a vented dryer in the apartment. After doing some research, I came across the Haier HWD 1000 and discovered that it was a ventless system, designed for apartments and motor homes. To make things even better, it plugged into the walls without needing an extra 220 line installed.

I was kind of skeptical when we first got it, but I can say that over the past year it has been a God-send. To be so small, it washes wonderfully. The dryer is good for very small loads and sometimes I have to hang things after they've gone through the drying cycle (things like bath towels, jeans, sweatshirts). Overall, the system is great and it does not use a great deal of electricity which was one of my concerns upon our initial purchase.

Until we move, the Haier is a great solution to having the convenience of washing in my home without having to pay for washing and drying. In addition, it has different cycles including a custom cycle that you can program for specific items.
