General Electric Profile Model WJRE5550K2WW

by Ellen Gardner
(Greer, SC)

Purchased on 7/6/09. Delivered and set up on 7/10/09. stopped working on 7/18/09. Total loads washed:8.5 So far, this machine sucks! earliest repair date 7/23/09. So far, GE repair sucks!

Previous machine was a Maytag, which was only 8 years old. That one had to be repaired 2X so Maytag sucks too!

Wish I could give it ZERO stars
by: Lindsay

We purchased our GE washing machine at Lowes in 2010 and had issues from just about day 1. It was incredibly loud and seemed to never fully drain. We called Lowes and they sent a repairman out. He told my husband there was nothing wrong. After that my husband began to notice silt build-up in the creases of all of his clothing, which came out in the dryer, but was left on clothes that needed to lay flat to dry.

The washer left the clothes tangled and wadded at the end of the cycle and tore several pairs of pants.

When the washer stopped doing the final spin and leaving the clothes soaking wet at the end of the cycle my husband refused to take it in because he hated it so much to begin with. He put it in the garage and found a washer at a rummage sale for $25 that works better than this $500 piece of scrap metal. We had been using that until I finally convinced him to take it in and have someone tell us what was wrong. The repair shop said they reset the inverter board and that it should spin now. 2 loads later and it does not spin.

Lawsuit
by: Anonymous

I've wondered if we might have a class-action base for this ongoing problem. It seems they just laugh all the way to the bank as they continue making/selling a machine that is a piece of junk. I'm not a lawsuit type of person, but when a company continues selling something that they know (from the complaints) doesn't work, then they need to be taught a lesson. I also want at least some of my money back. I calculated that I spent around $15 per load of clothes, and I was lucky because my machine lasted over a year. Their answer? "You should have bought an extended warranty" It sounds as though people are so disgusted with trying to get GE out to fix their machine that they buy another, in spite of having that warranty. Bottom line...these companies are committing fraud by continuing to take consumers' money for defective merchandise.

So, any Lawyers up to the job?
by: Sandy

Had the washer only a week before the problems stated in all of the above comments set in. Tried to work within the GE customer service line, the instructions, and common sense. Didn't do any good. Very high maintenance machine- if you don't do a second full rinse, you have soapy clothes, have to use washer cleaners each week to keep the smell down etc.. Last week it learned a new trick! The water does not shut off when the washer starts! You guessed it - water damage. Not enough to haul in the insurance adjuster, but close. I will never buy GE again- and I have some serious questions for Lowes for keeping this unit in stock even as the complaints were rolling in to their service departments. If anyone is interested in a class action suit, count me in-or let me know if you are interested as I may start one myself this coming week. Post your interest and we will have "our folks" contact "your folks".

JUNK!!
by: Anonymous

I purchased this machine in 09-2011. My complaint at that time was spots on clothes. Technican came out twice. "nothing wrong" Now I have noticed lint on my dark clothes and on my whites.I do smaller loads so I have more water in the washer. I called GE and the place I brought it and nobody will do anything. I wish I had seen this site before I purchased the machine. I'm purchasing another washinhg machine and going to get rid of this one. I raised 5 children (all grown now) and I have never had a problem like this. I'm not getting a high-efficiency machine. I think there should be a recall.

Worst Washer on the Market
by: Brian

I bought this washer with its dryer as a pair 2 years ago. This washer's motor which is mounted under the washer drum rubs the metal bottom of the washer case making the worst metal against metal scraping sound. I had repair service 4 times already to address this issue. The first guy bent the shipping brackets out of the way, that was good for about 4 months, then the next guy came out and broke those brackets out, that lasted for another 4 months, the next guy came out and bent the raised bottom down so the motor pulley would not rub the raised portions, the next guy came out and replaced the spring rods, this worked for the longest, however, we could only do small to medium loads at at time. Ridiculous!! The service folks all said that they could not do anything about the cabinet. Today the thing is rubbing again and I am so frustrated that I think I will just junk this and take the loss. I am going to complain to Lowes (I have the extended warranty) which doesnt cover the washer cabinet. I am so disappointed in this washer and will be looking for another brand. Of course aren't they all in bed with each other anyways!

I end doing more loads of clothes because I feel there is not enought water in the tub. My sheets get tangled, excessive lint on my clothes. I purchased in August of 2011.Repair man was out 1 month after buying. Could not find anything wrong. I called where I purchased the washer would do anything about it. I'm going to purchase a Maytag. I have been doing clothes for 35+ years. Never have I had such problems. This a piece of JUNK!!

Not very happy either
by: RBE

We have had this machine for almost two years in our two person home, doing laundry twice a week. After reading all the reviews I guess we are very lucky that it is still running, and has not required any service. That said, we have been unhappy with the tangle it makes of larger pieces, especially sheets. But they seem to be clean, and don't have an unusual smell. There have been some instances of spotting, and we notice threads sometimes get pulled out ( but no holes). GE call center was not able to help reducing the tangle. Recently it has begun to leave an excessive amount of lint on the clothes. Not sure if there is a lint trap like one of our older machines had, but it sure needs one. Nothing in the owners manual about a trap.

Will not be buying another one, and would recommend others to avoid it.

$300 to fix
by: brian

Can't believe this thing didn't even make it three years. Repair guy from GE said that the motor or motherboard need to be replaced. Since they are one unit it's $299 plus tax to fix. Should have went with Whirlpool or Maytag as both are well know brands for washing machines.
Repair guy was like, "other then that it looks good." Other then that! That's 80% of the cost to fix. What a joke. Consumer affairs should look into this since all these complaints are similar. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT

Money Pit

Biggest piece of junk that I have ever purchased. One week after purchase the control board went out. Two years later the fuse blew and paid a repair man $69 to remove it. Then one week later the motor burns up. Going to cost over $300 to have appliance guy replace it. So I purchased one off of ebay for $130. Maybe this piece of junk will last a few more years. If not, its going to the dump.

Worse washer
by: Anonymous

I have been in tears for weeks fighting Lowes and GE. I have had to throw away 3 different loads of laundry, I white, one towels and now a load of darks. The repair man says it is nothing mechanicly wrong so Lowes will not cover it even though I still have 2 years left on my warranty. All my clothes come out smelling like Gasoline and oil. They are telling me it is because it has a plastic tub and the tub pulls odors out of the air and it is pulling them from my furance. They told me to run 3 or 4 loads of lemon juice and hot water..did it. Then they told me to buy Alfresh and run it through ..did it..Just now through out a load of rags. I was told this morning, guess you will have to buy a new washer then. Stay far far awy from this machine!!!

Lowes is finally giving me a credit to replace this washing machine. It kept putting tiny holes in my clothing. Usually in the lighter weight clothing t_shirts and my 4 year old daughters clothing. After 3 new tubs, and finally out of GE warr. My extended Lowes service plan is buying it back from me. Thank you Lowes!!! I hate this stupid machine!!

Wow, I wish I had read these review before I bought this GE WJRE5550K2ww. Everything that is said is true, from the breakdowns to the poor performance. Mine broke down this week for the 2nd time in less than 2 years. I'm not even going to waste my time calling a repair man - just junk it and buy a Kenmore. My job is Quality Assurance and this is the biggest piece of junk you would think it was made in China (although China does have some good stuff). My last washer was a Kenmore, nothing fancy but washed well and lasted 20 years. I will never buy any GE again. With this many negetive complaints, we should file a class action suit. Any lawers out there want to take this on?

by: DJay

I guess we're "lucky" because we've made it 1 year and 9 months and our machine waited that long to die. Looks as though the consumers who give this machine a thumbs-up have owned it 6 months or fewer. We've had 2 previous machines. One lasted 19 years, and one lasted 22 years, so I know how to keep from abusing machines, thank you very much. We follow all directions as supplied to us. This is simply a piece of trash that we should have researched before throwing our money away. We, too, after just a few months had the machine to start banging and thumping, and sometimes making a really loud clunk as it started into a new cycle. The machine was level, and clothes not overloaded, and balanced in the tub, so we never knew what caused it to happen occasionally. Yesterday, when we tried to turn it on, the machine won't fill and all the lights are lit at the same time: fill, wash, rinse, and spin. Now you can add 'confusion' to the list of problems. I notice that Lowes no longer sells this machine. Hopefully, GE no longer makes it. Sorry, but this is our first GE washer and we will never own another, no matter what the model is, or what the consumers say. You had your first and only chance with us!!

GE WJRE5550K2WW Stinks
by: Anonymous

We've had GE washers and dryers for years without any major problems. Then unfortunately, we bought a top loading WJRE5550K2WW model from Lowe's in March 2010.

The machine is in a vacation house that we only use 3-4 months a year; so, in almost two years, it has had about 8 months of use.

There are only two of us; so, we hardly have a lot of wash. Last week the damn thing failed to spin out a small load. Several service people have told us that it probably needs a new motor & that it is not worth the cost to repair it. Next time we are there, we'll have to deal with it.

I own GE stock and this machine has performed about as poorly as GE stock has since Jack Welch retired. If this is an indication of their quality, it's no wonder the stock stinks.

Biggest POS Washer EVER
by: Anonymous

Bought April 2010, broke down first in Oct 2010. Lowes was called and a service man from North Louisiana called. I live in South Louisiana and they did not come down here. Finally, GE sent someone who replaced the motor. A few months later it went out. Again Lowes struggled to find someone local then got GE to come back. Again the motor was replaced and the belts replaced. He said the leaking water was possibly causing the motor to go out. I told him the washer had a small leak at first and Lowes said it might be because it wasn't level. I checked and made sure it was. Over time this washer has leaked more and more. So a few weeks later the this stopped working again and Lowes and GE were called. The motor was again replaced on 11/10/11 and the repair man said it might have a leaky tub. He also said he wouldn't return again because the washer was obviously being abused and the leak was shorting out the motor. This time it lasted 1 load, Thursday 11/10/11 the same day it was fixed. It squealed so loud you'd have swore I was killing a large dog in my laundry room.

If your washer quits spinning keep it and throw a cup of water on the floor because that's what you'll get with this POS machine. Nothing but problem after problem.

Worst purchase I've made.
by: Arch Stanton

I purchased this G.E. from Lowes in Jan. of 2009 and have regretted it every since. I can't believe that not only did G.E. make this machine but that Lowe's sales it. From day one it had "clunked" while washing clothes. I checked the owners manual and it even reads that "it will make clunking noises". What a poor design and probably one of the biggest rip offs I've know. If you are looking to purchase a new machine - do not buy this one, you will regret it such as we.

Piece of crap
by: Anonymous

Purchased in Mar 2010. I do laundry maybe once a week, sometimes every 2 weeks since there's only 2 of us. When we first got it, I had done maybe 4 loads of laundry and the machine went off balance and clanked around my laundry room like it was possessed until I had to manually unplug it! Since it had only been a few weeks since we got it, I asked Lowe's for a new machine, which they gave us. Since the 2nd machine was delivered, it's leaked a little bit of water sometimes, now the last two times I did a load, it's leaked ALOT. I have a call in to service now. Luckily we purchased the extended warranty since we knew from the start it was a piece of junk. It always squeeked and the clothes never really got clean. Wish we still had our old 20 year old Kenmore washer. That thing was built like a tank! No more GE products for this family!

Spin Cycle Failed
by: Anonymous

I did not have a problem with this washer for the first year I owned it. Purchased March of 2010. But now 2 months out of warranty it won't spin.
After speaking with a repairman over the the internet he said it needed a new motor at $219.
I hope he's wrong. I don't think it is the motor but more the electronics. When I set it to spin the light jumps to rinse and it just sits there.
I'll never buy another GE appliance after reading all of the previous reviews.

Have had this washer close to a year now. Purchased from Lowes on May 16, 2011. So far it has required 2 service visits with a third happening this Tuesday. All related to the belt and pulley. Only 2 people in my house. We both agree that the washer DOES NOT clean the clothes. Barely moves them around if at all. I've had to rewash clothes several times. The only way that the infuser thing moves the clothes around is if there are very few clothes. Funny that GE states in the manual that you can load clothes up to the "top row of holes in the washer basket." However, if you do this the infuser does not have enough power to move so the clothes barely move and NOTHING gets washed. This is supposed to be a higher capacity unit. The idea of an infuser drum makes sense, but the design is flawed because it WON'T move the clothes around. Terrible machine. Will probably trash and buy another. STAY AWAY

Won't switch to rinse cycle
by: Ramsey

GE's slogan on this washer should be "GOT JUNK?" because that's what this washer is! Bought it new from Lowe's in early 2010. I didn't like it from the start. The clothes didn't all get wet, they barely moved around in the machine (so I seriously doubt they were getting clean), they were spotted with the fabric softener, and they came out so tangled up and stretched. After about one month, the washer would stop after the wash cycle and wouldn't switch to the rinse cycle. I had to turn the washer off each time and select the rinse/spin cycle to make it rinse. All I got was the runaround from Lowe's, and never could reach anyone at GE. I got so disgusted with this washer that I bought another one. This washer is a total waste of money!

White spots on dark clothes GE WJRE5550K2WW

I have been washing clothes for 35+ years, using everything from laundramat machines, agitating machines, front-load, and now a top-load GE High-Efficiency washer. And I am so disgusted with this GE Model (WJRE5550K2WW).

I use "he" detergent and I still get white spots on my dark clothing. I have lessened the amount of "he" detergent, and still get the spots. I have also laundered with and without fabric softner. These clothes are hung to dry, so the dryer is not an issue. We had a GE repairman out and he could not give us an answer as to "why" since we had tried everything we could to eliminate the spots.

I am ready to throw this brand-new machine off the roof of my house.

Any suggestions???

NEW GE WASHER FAILS ON 4TH LOAD

Just bought a new GE Washer Model# WJRE5550KWW,

ON THE 4 LOAD THE SPIN CYCLE HAS FAILED. I ASKED THE SALES PERSON BEFORE I PURCHASED IF THERE HAD BEEN ANY PROBLEMS. HE ABSOLUTELY ASSURED ME THIS WAS A GREAT WASHER AND HAD HAD NO COMPLAINTS. I WAS RELUCTANT TO PURCHASE GE, BUT DESPERATE.

MY OLD WHIRLPOOL LASTED FOR OVER 20 YEARS WITHOUT A PROBLEM, I CAN'T GET 4 LOADS OUT OF THIS ONE.

IT HAD A HIGH SCREEM PITCH COMING FROM IT THAT MADE MY DOGS HOWL. I COULD HEAR IT THROUGH TWO ROOMS IT WAS SO LOUD.

I WANTED TO RETURN IT. THEY SAID NO. IT HAS TO BE FIRST REPAIRED BY GE. I ALREADY HATE THIS MACHINE AND WILL NEVER BY ANOTHER GE PRODUCT AS LONG AS I LIVE!!!

BY THE WAY, MY 20 PLUS YEAR OLD WHIRLPOOL DRYER SITS BESIDE IT. STILL DRYING CLOTHS WITHOUT EVER A PROBLEM. ALL I CAN SAY WAS HOW STUPIT I WAS NOT TO GO BACK TO WHIRLPOOL.

by: Anonymous

I don't have a problem with the way that it cleans. Yes sometimes clothes do come out very tangled but they seem clean to me.

Our problem is a strong moldy smell. I called GE and they said always leave the lid open when empty, and to run a hot water cleaning cycle with baking soda.

Did this and it's OK for a few days, then the mold smell returns. I've even tried bleach in w the hot water. Again, it's OK for a few days.

Anyone know how to stop this permanently? I'm not as dissatisfied as many are below, but this is not right for a new machine.

Will not fill tub with enough water to wash a small load.

If heavy cycle is used and clothes are above the infuser, the top pieces will not wash.

GE -Model WJRE5550K2WW Washer
by:

After reading all of the negative comments, about this GE model, we were a little concerned. However, we've had this washing machine for about six weeks, and have not experienced any problems, after about thirty washing cycles. We hope that the machine continues to function in this manner. We've noticed that we've saved about 16% on water usage, and about 10% on natural gas (for hot water heating). Hence, with the utility savings, this washer should pay for itself, within five years. Incidentally, our prior washer was a Maytag, and it only lasted 10 years. We've never had a washer last more than 13 years. Years ago, washing machines were built to last over 20 years. Unfortunately, those days are gone forever.

This GE washer is a piece of Junk. Clothes come out tangled - twisted on every cycle. Dry spots on the clothes. Every cycle on this washer causes the same problem of twisted, tangled and dry spots. This washer WILL NOT get your clothes clean.

Excellent Washer
by: mulder

You need to follow the instructions on how to use this washer. Gets hard to remove stains out. No issues, very quiet have had it now for 6 months. Love this washer.

WORTHLESS!
by: Anonymous

Agree 100% with the comments about failure to perform. Even with half a load and "super" wash cycle still doesn't clean. Leaves stains, leaves dirt in creases in clothing - there's no real agitation so clothing doesn't get mixed up in the water. With a large load, the clothing on top doesn't even get wet. I need 2-3 loads to wash what should be a single load - no energy/water savings at all. And it still doesn't even do a good job! This is the most poorly designed appliance ever! Washer technology is 100 years old - it should be perfect by now, but THIS IS A PIECE OF CRAP!

doesn't clean!
by: Anonymous

Purchased washer 08/09. Noticed that it did not seem to get clothes clean. I feel this is a result of the water saving feature. Unfortunately, it doesn't use ENOUGH water to effectively clean. As a result, you must decrease load size and do more loads which in the long run isn't saving water OR energy at all. Extremely disappointed with this product.

big disappointment
by: Richard Ingle

This appliance is a major disappointment. It barely uses any water so the clothes are left with dry spots and the stains they started out with. I have an office job so my clothes don't get that dirty to begin with and this machine can't even manage to get THEM clean. I will NEVER buy or recommend a GE product to anyone. If GE cared about customer satisfaction, it would own up to the inadequacy of this product and offer a refund or a replacement with a model that actually works...but we know THAT won't happen.

Washer Fails to Perform the Basics
by: Anonymous

Purchased this item in Jan 2010. It's performance is to not perform. It does not wash, spin, or rinse well. The water level performs like the low flow toilets, lousy. Don't buy this nonwashing machine.

DO NOT BUY
by: Anonymous

What a waste of money! It doesn't spin correctly, wash correctly or do anything it should correctly. Dry spots on clothes that I put into the water myself! Forget about anything that has a lot of dirt on it! I purchased the extended warranty-what a waste of money! Lowes never set it up when they delivered it because the hose didn't reach my outlet. The guy told me to go to Lowes and buy an extension kit! since July I have been back and forth between Lowes and GE with each blaming the other for the machine's problems. Meanwhile, I'm out $600.00! GE should recall this machine!

didn't work from beginning
by: Anonymous

The GE King Size Capacity-model #WJRE5550KWW washer was delivered to my house yesterday, was hooked up, delivery man put a little water in it, drained it and left.

I put a small load of clothes in, it filled it, never started the wash cycle, just sat there for 5 minutes, and I pushed the start button, which of course paused the cycle. So I drained the water, and found out the spin cycle does not work either. I called the 1-800 number, they wanted me to schedule a repair man to come out, the washer is 1 hour old and I need a repair man. I called Lowe's and have requested they pick up the washer and bring me another one.

That was at 5 p.m. yesterday, as of 8:30 a.m. today I have not received a call confirming if they have another one in stock that can be delivered. What has happened with the quality of our appliances, washers and dryers use to last 15 to 20 years, now we are lucky if they last 1 year, the washer I was replacing was 13 months old, they wanted more to repair it than I paid for it 13 months ago.
