GE WSXH208 front load washer

Not all consumers need giant-size tubs and super-size capacities for their laundry. There are small families and single users who will benefit from using just the right size of front-loading washers such as the GE WSXH208.

Whether there's lack of space in the laundry room or laundry cleaning is done in small batches, this washer offers almost the same features for a clean and thorough wash.

Product Overview

Though this washer is compact, the WSXH208 is still filled with features that make doing the laundry almost hassle-free. Its small size makes it ideal to be installed in places that don't have enough space as it opens up at the front. This washing machine can also be free-standing or installed in a special closet. Despite its smaller capacity, this front loader can perform just as well as other washers. It looks nice and stylish as well.

Key features

The WSXH208 is still a heavy-duty washer despite its compact frame. Its 3.1 cu. ft. body can take on small batches of laundry without wasting water, energy, and detergent. This washer is Energy Star certified, helping users save on energy and water costs because of the rebates. Since it's a front-loading device, it can be fitted into spaces even when no headroom is available. The laundry goes easy into the front-loading door and into a stainless steel wash basket in the tub.

Cycles

One's laundry gets a deeper clean with the prewash cycle that treats fabric pieces with a water bath first before the detergent is added. This procedure gently blasts the laundry with hot water to loosen dirt and stains. Laundry items are then quickly treated with cold water to prevent quality and color degradation. The timed dispensers of this front-loading washer automatically and evenly releases cleaning solutions such as detergents, bleach, and even fabric conditioners at just the right time and at the right amount so that none is wasted. Stubborn dirt and stains are also taken care of through the heavy and light soil options that control the speed, water level, detergent amount, and energy that will be used to get these stains out.

Settings

Despite its small size, the WSXH208 is packed with pre-programmed wash settings for different types of fabric. These can be set using the front rotary electromechanical controls. Variious cycles are suited for various kinds of fabric such as silk, baby clothes, and even wool sweaters. Water levels are automatically measured and adjusted using the controls.

There are four different washing and rinsing water temperature settings to choose from as well. This washer gives the clothes a deeper clean with its auto 2nd rinse cycle that washes out residual detergent from the clothes to protect people with sensitive skin and to ensure the quality and freshness of the fabrics. Fabric pieces with permanent pressing also receive the royal treatment from this washer by decreasing the occurrence of unsightly wrinkles through the easy care and permanent press options.

Since this washing machine is fully automatic, users can leave the washer to do its job to go work on other stuff or chores. There are times when users forget that they are doing the laundry. Fortunately, the WSXH208 has an adjustable end-of-cycle signal. This alerts users when the cycle is done, so they can put the clean laundry immediately into a dryer or hang it to dry, thus saving time in between cycles.

Quiet-By-Design™

For a compact washer that's designed to take on most stains, dirt, and other laundry problems, the WSXH208 is a pretty quiet machine. Its Quiet-By-Design™ is engineered for a silent operation, barely emitting a hum that could interfere with concentration on other chores. Vibrations are also significantly reduced as this washer comes with a leveling system that uses leveling legs.

Advantages

For households that only do smaller batches of laundry every week, the WSXH208 seems to be a good option. It performs just as well as other washers. It also comes in a compact design and has all the necessary features for thorough laundry cleaning.

Disadvantages

Since this washer is very compact, this is not ideal for consumers who need to wash a large load of laundry or a large item such as a king-sized comforter. Also, this washer is a bit too pricey for its size, with its retail price set at approximately $900.

Final Thought

This front-loading washer is perfect for users who live alone or do only small batches of laundry and have limited space. Though it can be a bit pricey, users can get a good value for their money because of its impressive features and the rebates that they can get because of its Energy Star certification.

Replacement models? NEW
by: Anonymous

I have this model with a GE DSXH43EA Dryer mounted on top in a laundry closet. The washer is ten years old and the bearings are going out. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement washer that I can still stack the dryer on? Any brand will do. If not 100% compatible, at least a washer with the same basic dimensions so it will fit in the space that I have available. Thank you.

Owned since 2003 still going strong NEW
by: John

I love this washer, only complaint is getting on knees to load/unload (minor inconvenience) other than that washing queen comforter machine has hard time going to spin cycle due to imbalance. But overall it's very quiet (on concrete floor) can barely hear it from upstairs. I'm actually looking for one for my daughter and the new models of washers have way to much useless features an electronics. This is what I would call a "basic" washer no bells and whistles. I've never had any repair issues...none. As far as size it'll do at least 7 pairs of Levis and have room to spare. So for me it's plenty big enough. One more thing the opening is small and wish it were larger. This style hasnt change much since I was a child (early 1960's) I remember the one my parents had it looked very similar. You know what they say, if it ain't broke.....

cleaning detergent/softener tray NEW
by: Anonymous

The dispensing drawer comes out when gently tugged sideways and pulled out. Then you can take the plastic pieces apart and wash in warm water to unclog the dispensing holes, and also remove any built up detergent and dried fabric softener under and behind the drawer. Ours worked well for 12 years and finally the bearings failed, so we got our money's worth. Now looking for a new washer to replace it while allowing stacking the original GE spacesaver drier on top.

Shocks?
by: Nancy

When people comment on "shocks", do they mean the large springs? I had a problem with a spring and replaced it. Where are the "struts"? Do I have to do more then take off the back to see the struts?

Thanks for any help.

Satisfied with years of operation
by: Anonymous

I owned my unit for 13 years. Went from a single guy to one with a family. Unit held up for the most part. Laundry was mostly clean, and we used all the settings. Ran many loads of laundry per week. Now the wash basket has broke loose. GE manual states that they will cover the wash basket for 20 years. However, repair costs are my responsibility. I am pretty handy mechanically, but I will not be doing this repair. Time to go invest in a new machine. Thanks for all the other's comments out here as well.

A Trusty Small Workhorse
by: Ray

Performed well for eleven years with several loads a week. Major repair required (first service problem) with the cost of repair too high for the age of the machine. Thanks GE - off to buy a new pair of front loading laundry.

Good while it lasted
by: Anonymous

My machine is 8 yrs. old & has died. The cheap plastic shocks are toast & now the wash basket has broken lose from the drive shaft causing an awful banging. There were slivers of gray plastic being found inside the machine that must be part of the tub enclosure. The machine worked as well as could be expected but 8 years of laundry for two people is far from what was expected. The wash basket would still be under warranty but they want the original sales receipt. Like I would keep that locked away, just waiting for the machine to die...
Obviously GE is only are there for you when you have your cash in hand. After the sale they say, I'm sorry that we can't help you, Please buy some more of our junk!
No More GE for me....I bought an LG...We'll see

I use this like a full size washer!!
by: Anonymous

I just got back from an extended trip and did six loads, large loads, one right after the other. I do ALOT of laundry as I have 3 dogs: 2 pups and one really old girl. This machine is a stinking DREAM in my opinion. I have washed queen comforters and quilts and they come out sparkling and fresh every time. You could have fooled me that this washer is as small as it is. I have had mine for 11 years. Have not had ANY repair issues AT ALL. And like I said I do ALOT of laundry.

I keep going back and forth about whether to get a larger capacity front load washer with a steam option. GE has plenty but I just hate to mess with success. So for now my little wash genie stays.......

Lasted 11 years
by: Anonymous

I've had mine for 11 years now - I replaced the shocks myself & used Frigidaire shocks. The parts store told me they interchangeable w/GE & they were only $30 instead of $90 from GE website. Then I had to replace the drain pump - $80.
Now there's a loud noise during high speed spin - sounds like something between the stainless steel tub & the housing is loose. Not sure if I want to try & fix it myself this time.

Satisfied

Mine lasted 9 years (2-3 loads per week, we are a small family), then the pump broke...decided to purchase a new machine instead of pouring $$ into a repair on that old a machine. Very satisfied.

Lasted 10 years

The brace holding the stainless steel drum broke, two of the three arms. Took me all day to take the washer apart to learn this, I was hoping some bolts had just become unscrewed. I literally had to disassemble almost the entire washer to remove the drum from the housing. Learned a lot in the process, including what to clean better or more often to keep the mold smell to a minimum (best option is to leave the front door open, as is true for all front loaders, but my wife doesn't want the cats hopping in!).

This washer has not always done the best job cleaning clothes, and I'm very disappointed the brace has broken. Prior to this I always owned the old W/D which were 15-30 years old when I bought them! But after reading reviews of this unit and compared them to others, I think I'll see how much a new brace costs before plunking down $500-$1,200 for a replacement.

Repair It,,or dump it?
by: Anonymous

We had ours less than 5 years. Shock on one side broke. Ordering new ones will be around 75-80 dollars. I am mechanical so replacing them myself won't be a problem. It's just 2 pins that hold each one in. I paid to much for this to just toss it over a $70-$80 part. I would think GE would use a metal material instead of plastic for the type of force the shocks endure but then hey, they have to get our money some how right?

Shock broke
by: Anonymous

I have been happy with this washer and used it with a family of 4. Recently a shock broke and the repair shop says it will be not be worth the cost to fix. Disappointed as I thought it would last past 7 years.

I only got rid of mine because we needed a larger capacity washer. But when we were without kids, this did the trick just fine. No issues whatsoever.

unhappy customer
by: Anonymous

I purchased this washer 4 years ago. First the suspension structs/shock absorbers broke on both sides then it developed a bad squeak in the rear of the drum and a very loud knocking noise that makes it unuseable.Probably not worth the expense to repair it.Would not be so disapointed in it if it wasn't for the fact that it isn't used very often.I don't know how long it would have held up if I would have had it when I was raising kids at home.Looking for a better one now. Won't be this model again.
