GE Front Loading Washer Model WBVH5100HWW

by Mike Metzger
(Toledo, OH)

Bought this machine about 3 years ago. It gets fairly heavy use (family of 6). Apparently way more than it was designed for. Replaced the main pulley after about 1 1/2 years. Now the belt and pulley both need replacing - and a crack in the pulley caused the belt to dislodge and cut through the plastic tub about 1/2". No water leak as yet, but the structure is severly weakened. First repair was about $50 (do all my own work). This repair would be closer to $100. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT OVERALL! A three year old machine and at this point I can't justify fixing it knowing I'll have to do it all again in about a year. Good-bye GE...

Recall NEW
by: Anonymous

I was doing wash with my E front load washer My Model number and serial number is one of the ones that definitely is on the recall list.

While washing I noticed smoke in the laundry room, and one heck of a noise. Fourtantly, I have found this thread. I would recommend, calling the number list in this thread, I could have have burn my house down.

GE should not make front load washers! NEW
by: Anonymous

Mold in the front rubber part stinks. The washer spins like crazy then I started seeing smoke. Originally I thought the washer was broken. Then came here to realize that the WBVH5100HWW is covered by the recall. I have a technician coming in now. Hopefully they fix it without a cost cause as they say on there website.

GE Washer a big disappointment NEW
by: Lisa I. Dallas, TX.

I can relate to all the comments about this machine. I have had better luck than most though as I've had my unit for about 5 years. That aside, the moldy smell is horrible, no matter what you do. In fact, I had mold so bad that a mushroom type mold would in my clothes. I cannot wait to get rid of this junk!

Smelly GE Washers
by: Anonymous

Disappointed in GE for not including model WBVH5100HWW on the recall list. This is such a disappointment. I have always left the door opened after using and wiped out with a sponge the rubber door seal. They should recall this machine and replace to each of us with a different model. We all work too hard for our money to get stuck with such a poor product.
I know that GE probably does not read these comments. Oh well a good way to vent. I went to buy a new microwave and did not buy GE because I am afraid that the poor workmanship will be displayed in their other appliances.

Should be 0 Stars
by: Angry Housewife

Read comments down to Oct 28. Absolutely agree worst washer I ever owned. Wet clothes at end of cycle, very noisy, airplane takeoff vibration, and now smoke in the drum and washer tub loose. Also shredding of any light nylon type material. GE should be thoroughly ashamed.

Awful
by: Maria

My husband bought us this front loader 6 years ago. It has handled large loads well, but continually has not drained properly, and just recently the door boot came apart and the cost is about $300 dollars for parts and repair. We have decided to go and purchase another washer, not another GE front loader. They surely do not make things to last anymore. My grandmother had a washer for 20 years, and only had repairs done once.

PIECE OF JUNK!
by: Lori

After 1 year had to replace two belts and one spider wheel. Now the bearings seem to be the problem and you can only purchase those with the rear tub, not separately.

They no longer manufacture this piece of junk. I will NEVER buy GE again. Sadly, I wish I had my OLD Maytag I left when I sold my home, because before this junk I purchased a new Maytag and it was junk.

Low Quality for the Price
by: Angelia

In 2007 I paid over $1,000 for this machine. For five years we have struggled with the machine "walking across the floor" -- no matter what we do, the machine is super loud and shakes terribly. GE says there is nothing we can do to fix it. In June 2012, the motor finally burned out and the inside of the machine filled with smoke. Clothes would also get stuck in the front rubber piece and standing water would create a horrible smell. We will not purchase another GE machine -- went with an Electrolux and the quality difference is amazing for a very similar price!

Mold
by: Anonymous

Agree with the aboce - it has torn clothes and the plastic ring around the front molds. We have kept it clean, door open and all kinds of cleaners but still mold. It is like $200 just for the part and it a huge pain to replace. Waiting till it gets too bad and then going to by a non-GE machine.

FRONT LOADER RINSE CYCLE
by: Anonymous

I bought this machine which I was so enthusiastic about. Wow what disappointment. The machine not only gets unbalanced easily but our cold water cycle gets stuck.

Clothes smell unless you put the cleanser through at least every other week.

Shame on you GE. You should back up your products or recall the ones causing problems.

Washer is JUNK
by: Lori

I hate this washer. I will never buy GE again, EVER! Terrible customer service. This washer has chewed up nearly 20 articles of expensive clothing. My son's school team garments were shredded. That was $120.00 alone. The belt has fallen off twice, smoke has emitted from the unit. SHAME on GE for making such CRAP!

Eats My Clothes
by: Greg

This has been one of the worst appliances we've ever owned. It chews up, shreds, and pulverizes our clothes randomly. Bought in on 1/5 and had it "repaired" on the 1/17. The issue stalled for a little while and then started doing the same. GE was not helpful at all.

ge front load washer model WBVH5100WW
by: Anonymous

We have had our GE front load washer as well as matching dryer for 3 years. Dryer stopped working first. Spent 150.00 to have it fixed. The next week the belt broke on the washer. 40.00 for a belt lasted maybe an hour before it broke. Had to have the belt and pulley replaced was without a washer for over a month. Finally got it back and the same day the dryer broke again. And now the belt has broken again on the washer. Will never ever purchase a GE product again.

GE Front Loading Washer Model WBVH5100HWW
by: Anonymous

We purchased our ge front loader about 2 years ago. Have lost many clothes due to them getting stuck under the gasket and tearing. Being a stay-at-home mom and having the washer right in the middle of the house, I hear the problem when it occurs, because it sounds like an airplane is getting ready to take off. Even if the clothes are not stuck under the gasket I have to stop the machine several times to adjust the clothes. A totally different sound, more like a bear is stuck in it and trying desperately to get out. Now it has started leaking, and I noticed the gasket has a tear all around underneath the top flap. It will cost around $200 to replace it, for the part and shipping alone. Haven't got as far as asking how much the service would be. I read about one person doing the repair themselves, with plumbers goop and a bicycle tire tube, cost around $6 and sounds like a good idea. It also has a recall which I just read about while looking for my part, for another problem that could cause a fire. I am without a washer for at least a week or so, and for a family of 6, that is a very long time.... guess I will be going to a laundromat until then. I am pretty sure this will be my last GE product!

Very frustrated customer
by: Anonymous

We bought our GE frontloader Washer around 3 1/2 years ago and have hated it ever since. Was always unbalanced and was constantly having to reposition loads. Also had problems with clothes smelling musty would have been nice if someone would have informed me about cleaning the washer before had mold. Finally so loud had to have it looked at and a bearing is out. The repairs would have been around $900.00. I do not recommend anyone buying a GE washer. Bought it at Lowes and they said it was a great washer. I notice they are still giving it good reviews.
