Rather than buying laundry detergent or fabric softener, I use the internet to find homemade formulas. I minimize my consumption of plastic as well as the use of chemicals that might be toxic to the environment.
I mainly do this with my dishwasher. I wash dishes far more than I wash clothes, and I hate the idea of dumping all those phosphates into the environment. I came across a great recipe for a dishwasher detergent powder using one part baking soda & one part borax. Some people say the cleaning effect is boosted with another equal part of traditional detergent powder. Hey, so long as you're REDUCING the amount you use, all the better, right? You can avoid any "spots" or "grime" by using plain white vinegar in the rinse aid compartment!

Homemade Cleaning Formulas by: Anonymous
I am just "getting into" this. I have found a lot of websites that have natural, homemade cleaning formulas. From air fresheners to carpet cleaners, there are many natural and non-toxic ideas out there. It is amazing how simple things like vinegar and baking soda can work just as good as store bought chemicals. Not to mention cheaper too.

So true! by: Anonymous
We do this also, and certain formulas we've tried work so much better than regular detergent. You just need to figure out which ones work best. We save an incredible amount of money per load as well. Definitely try this!
