Finders Keepers
by: combat mummy

If all this seems like too much responsibility falling on the shoulders of the person doing the laundry, you might enjoy this.....in our house the rule for items left in the pockets of clothes put in into laundry bins is finders keepers. If you find a phone or important message you may sell it back to the owner. If you rescue an item from pockets of clothes abandoned on the floor, which may or may not have been intended for the wash then the owner should offer an appropriate reward to the rescuer.

Wash pockets that no additional checking
by: Anonymous

It is my mother who always wash my clothes. I regularly dress in tight jeans and top. Since my jeans are washed occassionally my mother take much care before it being put in washing machine. She knows I use the jeans pocket and check them out. Everytime she washes it she take the pocket completely out and clean them as it may be dirty.

Check!
by: Gaurdian

I have been married for twenty years, a father of four children & grandfather of five. My wife & I have argued about this subject for as long as I can remember. It does not matter if you are an adult, teenager or toddler - humans are forgetful. My entire family only remembers to empty pockets less than half of the time, myself included. This is why it is so important for the person who EXCEPTS laundry duty to check pockets before it enters the washing machine. That person is the LAST defense in protecting forgotten items & the life of your appliances. Even if that person is only washing their own clothes, they are still responsible for items that enter the machine.

Example: What if I was working on a project at home that required work pants, then realized I had a doctor's appointment half way through the day. I cleaned up quick, changed for the appointment, but with the intention of returning to slip on the work pants & finish the job. In the meantime, someone grabs my pants & washes my expensive electrical tool I had in the back pocket? They can use the excuse, “well you knew to check your pockets” - but I'm not going to except that excuse!

Another example: Jenny just got home from school & was running late for her dance lessons. She quickly changes her clothes, dropping her jeans on the floor containing her phone in the front pocket. She slips on her dance attire & heads out. Half way there, she realizes she left her phone at home, but has no way to immediately call & let someone know.

Scenario 1: Five minutes later mom walks into Jenny's room & sees clothes laying on the floor; snatching them up without a care in the world, mom takes them in the laundry room & proceeds to drop them into the washer – INSTANT RUIN!
Scenario 2: Five minutes later mom walks into Jenny's room & sees clothes laying on the floor; she simply checks pockets knowing that sometimes things get forgotten, & voila – mom finds Jenny's phone & is glad it didn't get wet before dropping the pants in the washer – THANKS MOM!

It's much easier for a person to remember these tasks because they are specifically related to the chore:

1)Check pockets
2)Insert load into washer
3)Add detergent
4)Turn it on.

Only a few extra minutes to check pockets.

My children have been raised with this mentality and have excepted this method without dispute. They tell me all the time how they are glad they check pockets just before they do laundry or countless items such as checks, cash, special lists or important notes would have been ruined. My wife however, almost always gets out of laundry duty as she believes she should not have to babysit people and they should have to check their own pockets - but ironically, there has been more than ten occasions where she would have lost something important, had it not been for the laundry person checking her pockets!

So if you believe laundry is merely grabbing an armful and dropping it in the washer – Do us a favor & don't do laundry!

This tip is very important during cold season!
by: Scott

During cold season, I can not tell you how many times I have found dirty tissues in the pockets of my family's pants! After a few washes that came out covered in tissue pieces and had to be rewashed, I now check all pockets as a habit year round!

Check behind kids
by: Wesley

This is an extremely valuable tip for those with children. My two year old is always putting things in her pockets. You would be suprised of some of the things kids find to put in there. Crayons can ruin a pair of pants in the laundry. Why does a two year old need pockets anyway?

Mothers tip of a lifetime
by: Roni

This is one of those situations where Mother did know best. After ruining hundreds of dollars of clothes in one wash, I always check the pockets of all clothing before washing. You would be surprised at how much damage one box of 8 crayons can do to your clothing and your dryer.

Mom knows best
by: Anonymous

My mother always told me to check the pockets before doing the laundry. Now that I am a mom myself I know why it's so important. The things you will find in your children's pockets or the washing machine if you don't check! Stickers, rocks, mulch, money, and just about anything you can think of...getting all over the other clothes and sometimes destroying them. Make sure you always check those pockets, especially if you have kids.

Have to check the pockets!!
by: Anonymous

It's a must. You must check those pockets!! I did not check them after returning from a trip and I washed all the jeans together as I normally would. Put them in the dryer and guess what..there was a lighter in there. It was broken up in pieces!! That could have been very dangerous!! Luckily nothing happened and it was fine. But it's very very important to check those pockets!!

A must
by: Anonymous

This is a number one most important tip for doing laundry. Sometimes I forget, and when I take my pants out of the dryer, I see bits of tissue, or even money sometimes. Now I am more careful and check all my pockets before washing my clothes. Thanks for the tip! :)

Check the pockets
by: Anonymous

This is something that everyone must do. A forgotten tissue can make a real mess of your wash load.
I have a habit of leaving money in my pants pockets. My wife has "laundered" more money than the mob....

Or the purpose will be defeated!
by: Anonymous

This is a must do, or else all your efforts will be in vain. I've forgotten to do this, and have found gum, and ink all over my clothes. Occasionally, I'll find some extra gas money. :)
