Ceiling Fans

by Mari
(San Antonio)

I know its hot - I live in San Antonio and it has been hovering around 100 degrees for the last few weeks. With electricity costs mounting and the environment needing help I have found that ceiling fans running allow me to keep the A/C off for most of the day (I work at home a lot). I know it gets hot but your body will truly get used to it - now when I turn the A/C on in the late afternoon it is amazing how cool 84 degrees feels. Helps the environment and your pocketbook.

I do the exact same thing. I live in a loft, adn the only window is on the top floor. Of course heat rises, so the top floor is the hottest and houses my bedroom. I keep a fan running upstairs, and I keep my AC at 74. It was a little hotter at first, but I got used to it. I am financially very grateful as well. My power bill bill went down $15.00 per month. It works.

I always have my ceiling fans on, whether home or not and it does help my electric bill.

proven effective

This has always worked for me. Even if you can't use a ceiling fan all the time, using it during the day or at night can reduce your energy bill. Sometimes on a hot night I combine the ceiling fan with a cold washcloth placed on the box fan or on my forehead. Been enough to get me through a muggy Illinois summer.

More about fans

We use box fans to keep cool in our house. Circulating air really does make things feel cooler, and to improve the benefit, you can wipe your exposed skin with a wet washcloth and then move in front of the fan. The water evaporating cools you down.

Another benefit of ceiling fans (this doesn't work with box fans) is that you can reverse the direction during the winter to help circulate the warmer air near the ceiling down into the room.

I am a stay at home mom who battles the TX summer heat. The 100 degree days seem to go on forever. So its nice to know that something as simple as turning on a ceiling fan can not only cool you down, but save money and energy.

Definitely true

I understand living in warm climates. We only have AC in one room, and it doesn't circulate well at all. So we have all adapted using fans and it definitely is hot at first, but I totally agree that your body gets used to it. Fans do save money, compared to using the AC.
